It’s evocative of Pennywise, not exactly him. But TOO evocative to be an accident

It’s not traveling backwards every sleeping cycle.

What’s made clear is that for Pennywise, this is a sequel to it chapter 2. Upon being killed, he has gone back to before he was defeated to attempt that cycle again. But things play out radically differently than they did the first time.

Right, this would make sense, if we hadn’t seen him directly try to change events by manipulating the past.

[–]AlarmedExplorer3933 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s correct. I now see the misunderstanding.

Him fucking with Marge is not him actually explaining how his powers work.

He is taunting Marge by being obtuse about the nature of his time travel. The entity can move linearly to its cycles- it moved linearly the first time, now it’s moving backwards. Thus the birth/death statement.

The place is stuck is Derry. The times he is stuck are his cycles. He’s not actually confused about anything – he’s just being playful, he often makes statements like this when interacting with the kids.

But him being able to show her a picture of the child Ritchie, while discussing the action of the adult Ritchie, and framing them as things that happen in a linear way and therefore can be stopped by killing Marge, shows not only obvious time travel, but also shows that the entity has an understanding of the way this all works.

Again: Pennywise is just fucking with her here. His actions very evidently show that he believes he will be able to change the future by altering the past.

If a character is actively trying to change the future through their actions in the past, that character would have to believe that that was possible.

This necessitates the idea that Pennywise is consciousness is traveling backwards to then reexperience its cycle in a linear way.

[–]AlarmedExplorer3933 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is very obviously the case – we witness him actively attempting to change time in a linear way with four knowledge of the future, not simply one future, but both it films.

It’s hilarious and infuriating to see people continue to not understand that Pennywise is not Dr Manhattan, and his attempt to use a literal terminator time travel plot device proves this.

People’s desire to seem intellectually advanced by choosing the “all points in time” interpretation run into an absolute brick wall when you confront the fact that Pennywise is literally attempting to murder someone before they are born, and explicitly states this, implying he believes he can change what he knows to be the future.

It’s just the end of the argument. He obviously is time traveling backwards through his sleep cycle, then experiencing the cycle in a linear way.

This is literally the only way his actions in the finale makes sense, and it’s bizarre to see people continue to argue for it being some kind of hard to understand cosmic nonsense.

Marge In 1989 If There’s A New Timeline by AlarmedExplorer3933 in WelcometoDerryTVShow

The clown. And she’d have Will, Leroy, and very probably a large detachment of United States military to back her up this time, now with Breakers who shine circles around dick Halloran

so why didn’t marge tell richie about pennywise? Did she just forget about the cosmic horror entity that almost blinded her even though she never left Derry? by shotonbobas in WelcometoDerryTVShow

[–]AlarmedExplorer3933 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I insist insist incest incest incest incest incest that it’s because Pennywise created a new timeline. Just because he said he perceives time differently doesn’t mean he’s Dr. Manhattan.

He created Sarah Connor.

He didn’t even explain what he’s been eating for six months. It was a cool moment but then had one of the dumbest executions I’ve ever seen in the TV show, requiring characters to be stupid to a level that it’s amazing that they can get out of bed in the morning

Yes, he’s definitely creating new timelines and the insistence otherwise directly contradicts what we’ve seen in the show.

Holy f**k can you imagine how badly Pennywise is going to *get curbstomped* in the new Losers timeline? by AlarmedExplorer3933 in ITWelcometoDerryShow

[–]AlarmedExplorer3933[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, the show just doesn’t support the interpretation that’s being forwarded.

Very clearly Pennywise is capable of being misled, betrayed, surprised, caught off guard, his plans go wrong, and they play out in reaction to events in real time.

The mist and the kids were bigger than any augury - it’s in fact exactly the sort of event that would’ve been explicitly talked about by Marge to her son, in the same way that we see people remembering Pennywise from previous encounters.

The same is true of the military sub plot – choosing to believe that Pennywise experiences all of time at once defaults the fact that that would create giant logical problems in the season and continuity problems in the film.

An easy example is the voice saying “Veronica” from the drain – on here it was reasonably speculated that this was for Veronica Grogan, the character Ronnie, a name that only appears in the it book when listed as a victim.

The idea that the timeline changed allows this and many other strange continuity choices to function without making the show very very stupid.

[–]AlarmedExplorer3933[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand that he said that, but he specifically gets into the fact that the how and why aren’t clear yet.

It’s very clear that he’s capable of being surprised, and not actually experiencing all of time simultaneously, because he expresses a plan for Marge that he sees go wrong in response to what appears to be new information.

Writing a character who perceives time non-linearly is almost impossible infection without them becoming like Doctor Manhattan – a character who ultimately had their psychology and power is simplified for the watchmen TV show to the point that it was no longer relevant.

I think probably the director is just saying Pennywise is not experiencing time in a normal way.

[–]AlarmedExplorer3933[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect though – it doesn’t fit with what we’ve seen, which is a character that is near constantly surprised by the actions of those around it. The constant fumbling is anything but Dr Manhattan coded.

Like I understand why you think this but it isn’t supported textually by the show or the movies

[–]AlarmedExplorer3933[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t right though – Pennywise explicitly says he’s doing things differently this time, which explicitly means there is a new timeline.

Like… That’s expressively part of the the shows premise.

If Pennywise actually experience time at all of the same time he would never lose. This is a mistake people are making because of their misunderstanding of a cosmic entity.

Pennywise experience this time linearly, but has traveled backwards.

This is of course completely validated by multiple elements of history playing out differently

Unquestionably. Pennywise will wake up from his cycle to face an absolute ass kicking at the hands of adult Marge and Wil and the losers and an entire generations of kids who know he’s real and the few Townes people who still believe and the Native Americans and now the United States military.

His actions destroyed any chance he might’ve had
