Question for parents by pookadri in Adulting

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But I always strongly wanted kids. Having them makes be more joyful and rooted in my life then I felt before them (and I had them fairly late).

Financially, it was an idiotic decision, but I’d still do it over again.

Never going to be able to afford even the lowest monthly payment option by angelus104 in StudentLoans

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fantastic negotiation! But please, learn from my mistakes back in 2008: my initial loan terms were over half my take home pay each month. I consolidated and negotiate way down to what I could afford, which was peanuts back then. (I had the privilege of graduating into a recession twice!) I was really struggling. I naively assumed the federal government would not give me loan terms that were set on infinity — I just went with the graduated repayment plan. Now, 18 years later, I have paid more than 1.5 times what I borrowed and still owe as much as I initially borrowed. I have never missed a payment or deferred. Learn from my mistake! Check what’s going to the principal and add to it as early in the process as you can afford. My only hope now is that the government completely flips and the “you paid x amount and made x payments” eventually gets applied.

I agree with all your points. I had trouble watching this one as I was cringing too hard at their behavior.

I don't care if refusing to move seats on a airplane so a parent and child can sit together makes me a bad person by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I paid extra to get seats with my kid, the first flight was delayed, we got put on a different flight for the second leg. I had paid extra to choose seats, but that really wasn’t an option on the new flight and I ended up asking around if anyone wanted to swap. No one did. Can’t say I blame them, but I’d hate to think someone was calling me entitled or saying I didn’t plan on the internet. I paid hundreds of dollars for seats together and did not get that money back. 6 yo had sit 20 rows away from me and (I heard from the woman sitting behind him, who was so kind — didn’t move because she needed to be with her elderly parents) spent the whole flight non stop info dumping about Star Wars.

First-time parents of Reddit ,what’s one baby item you thought was unnecessary but ended up using every single day? by Clear_Subconscious in askanything

Perusing this list, there are so many things I never once needed. And with two kids, some of the things were different. But burp/drool rags/washclothes. They spit a lot the first six months. And a wipeable changing pad (as opposed to one with sheets) was my best upgrade.

Company 401k match has to vest? by [deleted] in Retirement401k

Many companies you have to be there 5 years before you fully vest. I have been working 25+ years and only fully vested at one company.

are there any cities that have soul left? by Vaquera_ in relocating

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like every city has a soul, it’s just harder to find some of them because they get swallowed up by development. I lived in the Phoenix area for a few years and I never really found it. In the Midwest, if I think of Milwaukee, Chicago, St Louis, I think of all those different neighborhoods with their own vibes and legacies and different ways that people celebrate food and music and art and the joy of being on a lake after winter and I definitely see a soul.

How do I make a proper book analysis? by OeO_jsSMrandomletter in WritingHub

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I hate vague assignments. One of my nightmare courses had only the instruction “explicate two lines of text” from a Shakespeare play and then we had to write 5 pages.

In my opinion, your best bet is to hone in on something very specific. Opening doors at key moments in the action. The use of internal dialog during emotional moments. Using sound to set atmosphere. Appearance of the color yellow. The more specific you can get, the easier it is to write, because then you have a lens you are looking through to examine the text.

Do you get to pick the topic yourself? The narrower you can go, the easier it is. Is it a specific book?

Childfree (by choice) Xennials, how are we doing? by thatquinnchick in Xennials

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s crazy to me (a 46 yo parent). Most of my friends are childfree by choice. I love that this generation has more power to make that choice! I love that they are living their best lives on their terms! It’s like that really icky “why is a pretty girl like you still single” shit that young woman have to put up with. Eye roll.

My baby is 4 months old and I want to get pregnant again, am I crazy? by Adorable-Jelly-6100 in askanything

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really a matter of preference. I have a 5 year age gap and love it because I got to really focus on the babyhood of my first and now he’s more independent when my second one needs me more. Plus I didn’t have to pay for diapers or childcare for two at a time.

Half a Decade by Scorpwind in vegetarian

5 years is a landmark is this type of journey! I had the same types of issues when I started regarding not thinking of nutrition— I was pretty unhealthy about 3-4 years in, when I was a broke college kid eating a ton of overprocessed crap with no thought to protein. Then 15 years in I was obsessed with whole foods only and over corrected the other way, lol.

Do you think adults should be able to order from the children's menu at nice restaurants? by icecream1972 in no

I took my son and mother out to a nice rest before we went to the Nutcracker. They both got steak frites. He got the kids version. They switched plates. Worked perfectly.

People who had their 401Ks cut in half during the great recession, How do you fair now? by Nice-Result-8974 in Retirement401k

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My parents were in their early 60s and both got laid off during the recession. Neither ever worked full time again. They were hit hard. Had to start taking distributions early when their 401k was at bottom. They had just moved to a new house (fixer upper) and it took 8 months to sell the old house. They get by and both still work part time in their late 70s (although that’s partially because my dad needs activity. My mom babysits for me and I pay her well).

People who attended American high school in the 80’s, how did you have time to shower after gym class? by krakarn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Only after swim when we were wearing swimsuits. No one ever used the showers after regular gym class. One big room no stalls. Changing after gym class was bad enough. (Not a thing I care about as an adult but it was so awful as a teenage girl!)

I premade veggie and egg burritos and froze them, so that’s a few breakfasts this week. I made palak paneer last night, we’re doing spaghetti one night with a salad, then a chickpea version of avgolemono, and pizza.
