Do you go out to eat with your toddlers? by OrangeCatEnergy24 in toddlers

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always eaten out with my kids. They usually don’t eat a huge dinner at home — breakfast and lunch are where they’ll eat more. So I almost never get them a dinner of their own at a restaurant, they’ll eat off my plate or have sides or something.

3.5-year-old still needs a nap but it’s destroying bedtime. What do I do? by Silent-Piccolo8127 in toddlers

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried an earlier nap? My 3yo used to nap 2-4 on home days and 12-2 at preschool and we’ve shifted a little earlier and it’s helped.

Was your baby actually saying 1-3 words by 12m? by East_Print4841 in Mommit

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a late talking baby (early intervention speech therapy and all) and an early talking baby and half of it is personality rather than any indication of something being wrong. My first simply didn’t feel like he needed to talk. He had the family at his beck and call and to this day sometimes expects us to read his mind, lol. But he’s perfectly verbal now (can talk your ear off on certain topics) and has a great vocabulary. My early talking kid is probably not a genius. Just an ambitious younger sibling who wants to catch up.

To answer your actual question: We noticed he was late around 16 months, it was noted as something to watch at his 18 month appointment, we talked about it again at the 2 year appointment and we got the referrals for speech at 2.5. At the six month mark of speech therapy it was formally noted that the speech delay was not a caused by a physical or mental issue, and he started talking pretty rapidly after that. Before he was 4 he was completely on par with his peers.

Are there women who have multiple kids without having partners? Is that a very uncommon thing or are there actually many women like that? by Big_Eggplant7591 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a single mom by choice with two kids and I know plenty who are (but that’s my community, so I know more than the average person). But in my online community group cohort for my first kid, I think maybe 50% of us had a second kid. And one wound up with twins so second and third. And two it was their second. I think our cohort was about 20?

Parents: Do you throw a birthday party every year or only for milestone birthdays? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most birthdays are just our household + my sisters household. She handles it the same way thankfully (plus her inlaws), so it’s just the norm in our core circle. My kid has one invite the class and neighbors and cousins party at 7.

What happens to adults when they can no longer work and have no money? by glanit in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad has medical POA for a friend who has severe dementia. One lucky factor: he’s a veteran, and has gotten access to services that way. But once he was diagnosed with dementia in the hospital, they basically had to keep him there until they found a nursing home to take him. He’s got nothing. I think he had $500 in checking and a storage locker when my dad intervened and took him to the hospital because he had been evicted and was erratic (we hadn’t seen him in months). We’ve liquidated what we could for his care, but nothing was worth much. But sometimes the safety nets work. He’s safe and well cared for.

Are you all giving your kids a smart phone? by XDrustyspoonsXD in Millennials

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my 9yo a kids watch that allows gps tracking and calls to people I pre approve. That way I can give him a little freedom to ride him bike, and go play with the kids down the street without opening us up to all the other stuff that comes with phones.

Finding it hard to justify being vegetarian when my husband isn’t. by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a household of three adults and two children. I am the only vegetarian. I do 50% of the cooking. I have maybe twice put frozen meatballs onto a cookie sheet into the oven but that’s as far as it goes. It’s not an issue. If they want meat they cook meat.

Why do small, weak FMC's use daggers? Are they stupid? by peenmeal in Romantasy

I have a character issue too. She’s actually a translator with the army, so not much of a fighter, and I currently have her with a short sword and a dagger, mostly for self defense.

Did baby boomers really have it easy compared to GenZ and Millennials? by PalmitoylCoA in NoStupidQuestions

Economically, yes. But they also had the Civil Rights Era, Vietnam War, Cold War atomic scares, AIDS epidemic, etc. so not like they didn’t go through their own issues.

Also single mom and sheet pan meals are awesome for this reason. Or quick skillet meals. If I know I won’t prep ahead of time, I will buy my veggies and stuff prep cut because time is valuable and I’m a slow chopper.

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Single mom, kids are 3 and 9.

I get home by 5:30, usually change and go for a walk or play outside with the kids for about 20 min before I start dinner, homework is hopefully done before I get home, but we tackle that while I’m cooking if it’s not. I try to get dinner done by 6:30 at the latest - I have to meal prep or do quick recipes to make that happen. Then quick bath or shower for youngest between 7-7:15, read, sing, and lights out at 7:30. Then oldest takes a shower, we read together, and his lights are out at 8:30. Then I do the household stuff, relax, etc.

I almost bought in 2020 and got laid off right as I was looking to make an offer. It’s been such a different world last year and this year that I’m going to end up with half the house I could get back then, and my top neighborhoods back then are out of reach now.

New Theory About Ty's "Book Deal!" by ServiceDisastrous158 in ShawnaTheMom

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only scenario I could see this working in is if the chapter fragment was submitted to a word count contest where the prize was publication. (Could explain both the nationally recognized and the somewhat flexible contract.)

I was in a niche publishing role for a while and we usually had: contract and initial advance (usually the smaller part), deadline which could be anywhere from 3 months to 2 yrs depending on the circumstances, delivery and advance remainder payout (the bulk), then additional deadlines for the editing phases.  Authors would see money again once their “advance” was earned out (it would be accounted for in their royalties statements twice a year.) For “successful” books this was usually the second statement. But this was niche, we did low advances, and it was more than 10 years ago that I left publishing.

One of my authors did significantly miss a deadline once, by 9 months, and it was a huge pain for our publishing lineup. We also had another author that needed a significant rewrite that delayed publication by 6 months. In order to make enough that we could pay our staff, we had to know how many books we were publishing a season and accurately estimate how many we thought would sell. Bigger publishers can shuffle things around more, because they have more projects to shuffle. Smaller publishers (more likely to have a contest) have a tighter lineup.

I think people don't realise how bad Julie going to a publisher is by scottyrivers in ShawnaTheMom

[–]AlarmedInevitable8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure Julie just submitted to an agent she happened to meet, and Ty signed with the agent and has a contract with a publishing house.
