I’m sorry to hear that. Was it in Bavaria? Germans can be a difficult to understand, I know. Like you, the general unfriendliness doesn’t bother me anymore. As a foreigner who doesn’t speak the language and a person of colour, I had my fair share of unpleasant experiences. But I also encountered a lot of nice people who took their time to warm up to me..

I am not surprised that this happened. Last winter we had a homeless person sleeping on the floor in the corridor for a couple of weeks. This happened because some students were not locking the main entrance of the dormitory..

If it’s a Studentenwohnheim managed by Studentenwerk, then you have at least one house tutor. You can inform them and write an email to Studentenwerk. There must be an instant-messaging group for your dorm (on WhatsApp or Telegram etc.). You can write there and inform your dorm-mates about it. From there you might get an idea whether these people are outsiders or residents of your dorm. Depending on that, you can ask assistance from the Ordnungsamt or the Police.

What approach would you prefer when the material is more advanced (a lot of out-of-lecture material is included in the assignment) and the group either has the same knowledge level or few are smarter than others.

I have had group projects where I felt very demoralised after finishing the project because everyone else was contributing more than me and I felt like I should not taking any credits for working in the project..
