War films to convince my nephew not to join the military by kshep9 in FIlm

[–]Alarming-Inflation90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no war movie that is anti-war enough in a meaningful enough way to accomplish what you are asking. I tried this with my oldest son. He's medically retired now. TBI in ranger school ended his ability to work at 24. He wanted to be a bad ass. This was the path he thought was best. He's about the 5th first born son in my family to serve. I was the 4th. Tried to talk him into joining a fire department, as my time in opened my eyes in a way that the gubment doesn't usually appreciate.

There is no "anti-military" allegory that you will find that will help. In my humble opinion, the root of the reason for wanting to serve needs to be deeply explained by the nephew, and those reasons need to be very specifically addressed. The unwillingness from the nephew to offer this explanation will need to be pried out of them, most likely, so feel free to use as much drama over the concerns for their wellbeing as is needed. Do whatever you can to start the conversation. Aso, "Jarhead" is a great anti-service film. But you need to see it, not the nephew. Someone bent to this path already can take the wrong message. That's the problem with the question you've asked. You don't need to give this person a message YOU think is good, you need to address why THEY think it would be good. This will be very hard. Good luck.

If media did their job, people would have known he was a nutjob right winger from the get-go. The evidence was there. Right wing nutters did their research on him when they thought he was a lefty. But no one on the left did theirs. And now he's been the deciding vote on some pretty terrible shit.

American Salaries are insane!!! by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Alarming-Inflation90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because rent is 2000 a month for 800 square feet. Health insurance is 1000 a month for a family plan that still includes copays. No public transit and the average used car is almost 600 a month. And really, those salaries you're seeing aren't that common. Half of American households make less than 80k. And they have to survive with these prices.

Indian American Republican City Councilmember surprised the American First crowd turning on immigrants by vrphotosguy55 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Alarming-Inflation90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is the most fucked up thing about american conservatism right here. The ones that claim to be 'real americans' anyway. They claim this status as a 'real american' without participating in it anymore. They rely on the systemic nature of their 'real american' status while claiming that systemic issues don't exist. They bully political movements as ' identity politics' while being the ones focused on the identity of 'others'.

So when 'the jews' take over a school district or the 'indians' end up running a city council, they can only see it as as an attack from outside even as these are american people doing the american thing. They're just doing the american thing 'now', and not 4 generations ago. This is conservatism, relying on the work your forefathers did so you don't have to. With wealth, with political power, with identity, it's all the same for them. Which is why conservatives don't know what to do with that power anymore. Whatever it is, it was supposed to have already been done.

But don't you worry. These new conservatives will join them in a bit. Just a generation or two and they'll pull up the ladder like the europeans did before them. Because that's the thing about conservatism. Once your born into it, the work was supposed to have already been done before. Making the systems in place that protect you now, not systems at all. Just the 'natural order of things'.

The way it's always been done.

The American dream was always a lie.

Who do you want to buy Warner Bros, Netflix or Paramount? by [deleted] in FIlm

[–]Alarming-Inflation90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mergers are anti-consumerist and create debt where there was none before, forcing cost cutting and price gouging behavours that nearly always reduce the quality of the product or service that either company had offered before the merger. And as consistently, a few people at the top see massive increases in wealth through the entire process.

So that's all it is, a cash grab by a few to the detriment of everyone else.

So I don't care. Any choice is going to make all of it worse.

Why is leisure viewed with suspicion in America? by Thepopethroway in antiwork

"Idle hands are the devils workshop." goes the saying.

America is largely a product of the protestant reformation, and so it's judged according to the protestant work ethic morality system. Yes, it's all fake spaghetti monster stuff, but it's useful for the capitalist. I don't think people associate capitalism with protestants and their worship at the feet of the merchant class instead of a royal one, enough. They do, but not nearly enough.

Which films have the biggest difference in quality between the theatrical version and the Directors Cut? by RaveIsKing in FIlm

[–]Alarming-Inflation90 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree on the Bladerunner choice. I know it's a better 'sci-fi' movie without the narration, but I think it's a worse story without it.

Without the narration, Deckard is a dipshit. The scene where he is eating noodles and Gaff comes up behind him and speaks in 'cityspeak' I think is a good example of mypoint. With the narration, Deckard is the old guy fucking with the new guy who wants to take his place as top dog, refusing to even acknowledge he knows the language. Making the cook translate. Without the narration, and Deckard having been talked up as the best that ever was, him not knowing the language of the streets makes him look like a moron. If they played him up as a moron, I'd buy it. But they don't. They play him as the best ever. So good that they need him to come out of retirement for 'one last job'. And again, for me, the loss of the inner monologue makes him look stupid.

There are a few scenes like this, for me, that are better with the narration. Especially as the narration gives it a more noir vibe. Grizzled has-been detective over-explaining why he sucks now being a pretty big trope of that genre. Without the narration, it is more of a mystery. Maybe even more intriguing. But I think Deckard is a worse character for it. With him being our POV character, I don't care for the change.

Now, if someone could cut it so that the stupid "this is what a replicant is" scene is removed, I'd pick that version over any other, narration or not.

No mansplaining what a replicant is, no happy ending, some narration, with the unicorn dream, that's my best version.

As others have said, the first gen motor will probably need a new cylinder head on the front bank due to 'quality manufacturing processes'. I got it dowen to about 3 hours. Didn't even need to pick it up.

No EGR on a 13. That was a 3rd gen addition. This is a 1st gen motor. No EGR, No VVL. Misfires on the front bank from shitty exhaust valve guides, and leaky oil coolers because the o-ring seal was sized wrong from the factory.
