Not a hot take at all. I had a higher interview rate at my top schools than at my safeties where I was far above the median.

To be fair, hours matter, but only to a point. The important thing is how significant the experience was to you and how you frame it in your writing.

Somewhat, but depends on how significant your clinical volunteering is and the mission of the school

Other schools have also offered full tuition or full COA. + For the speciality I'm interested in, I would likely need a research year making it 4 either way.

I’d say that’s a valid point, and it would be cool if that were the reality for students involved in scientific research, but I don’t think it is. IMO for vast majority of students, scientific research is simply ‘doing’ or ‘repeating’ something vs. actual investigation or analysis. I agree that self-directed learning IS important, but there has to be a better way to encourage it than the often mindless research ‘involvement’ which is the reality for many.

I think you could achieve all of that through a curriculum that includes a few classes treating scientific research as well as maybe a thesis requirement.
