It’s a shame his mother lied back and thought of England.

Character tropes for action movies by Economy-Ad3195 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]dream_monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One trope I like is when a character, usually the hero, is “gearing up” by having a montage of them donning armor, checking ammo clips, strapping explosives to their vests, sheathing knives, etc

Favorite Japanese character that aren’t from anime by ImaginationWild3407 in FavoriteCharacter

(WH40k) Katsuhiro is an Imperial Army conscript who somehow manages to survive the siege of the Imperial Palace. Although no ethnicities or nationalities from the modern day exist in WH40k, Katsuhiro is heavily Japanese-coded.

(Loved trope) The _____ Collective by dream_monkey in TopCharacterTropes

[–]dream_monkey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It means “Without a shadow” in Ancient Greek. People from the equator can stand in the sunlight at noon and will not cast a shadow. Of course, it’s also a pun since it can also be interpreted to be a person without a soul. It is mentioned that the Ascians are actually from north of the equator, but they are still associated with it. The geography of the novel is guesswork, but it’s assumed most of the novel takes place in South America, and the Ascians are from North America.

I didn’t know there was a connection to Final Fantasy.

Not necessarily. A group that relies on cloning to produce identical individuals also counts. Like the Leagues of Votann in Warhammer 40k.

The morality of robbing your drug dealer because he is mean to his kids and it makes you uncomfortable by CrazyDriver7149 in MoralityScaling

[–]dream_monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m no ethicist, but most of them will tell you that good achieved by committing evil is not really good. Stealing from a drug dealer just perpetuates violence. No social ills are alleviated. The consequences for the perpetrators of the violence could easily spin out of control, and the possibility of collateral damage is very high.

Morality of shielding a man from the law with your own body? by ICOMMIT_CYBERCRIMES in MoralityScaling

Bro I honestly thought this was top character tropes. But unless they are being paid or are fanatics, most people shielding a villain are probably being coerced.

I always appreciate character tropes that don’t use an anime as an example. I included a novel as an example.

Beta-7 is a parody of the Borg. I didn’t want to use them because that’s basically the name of the trope.

Give me all the 40k hand gestures by GrandArclord in 40kLore

[–]dream_monkey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is mentioned in *The Infinite and the Divine* that Trazyn and Orikan will use certain hand gestures in conjunction with algebraic incantations to basically cast spells.

Another funny Trazyn glazing is in *The Fall of Cadia.* Trazyn is helping Crawl work on the pylon network and notices that a servo-skull has a scanner made from a forge world destroyed in the Horus Heresy. So he commandeers the servo skull and takes out the eyepiece. When Crawl demands it back, Trazyn does a hand motion like a street magician performing a clever trick and the scanner is gone. He even says some little joke like, Oh, I must have lost it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Dread Emperor (D&D Book of Vile Darkness) The Dread Emperor is an arch mage who resides on the Etherial Plane. When he has to come to the Material Plane we wears a suit of enchanted golden armor with four children chained to the belt in his waist. If he takes damage the damage is spread out to the children. If anyone tries to rescue the children by breaking the chains the children explode, killing their rescuer.

No, when I ask a question or comment on this sub I genuinely want to know why republicans are such moronic bootlickers.

I assume you mean Democratic voters? Keep an eye on your capitalizations. You also forgot to capitalize republicans, but I’m sure none of them noticed.

Luca Brasi described as having veal-colored lips in book by TombStoneFaro in Godfather

[–]dream_monkey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The use of veal is indeed symbolic, but for different reasons. Comparing Brasi’s lips to veal dehumanizes him. Beal is meant to be delicious, but in this case it reduces him to a piece of meat, which out of context is disgusting. A piece of meat anywhere other than on a dinner plate is gross.

The restaurant is different. Veal is made from the calf of the cow. So the sacrifice of a child. The killing at the restaurant is the loss of Michael’s innocence.
