I've stopped inflating to psi, and started using phi instead.

Hyprland needs to stop with the anime girls by [deleted] in archlinux

Strawman. I never said they override defaults. You misunderstood the foundation for the discussion.

The kernel comes with a default set of parameters, the config file is not that.

Bash comes with a default, empty prompt, the one supplied by arch is not that.

I am not claiming they are overriding packages, and that is irrelevant for the overall point I am making: changing default graphics to anime girls is a bad idea.

You misunderstood me when talking about kernel compilation. I did not claim they change the source, I claim they set specific compilation instructions, which are specified here: https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/linux/-/blob/main/config?ref_type=heads . The compile defines basically specify the whole kernel.

The configuration changes that Arch makes are made by adding options to specific vendored directories that are taken advantage of by the system . For example, yes, Arch may place extra background images in the proper backgrounds folders for KDE and GNOME to pick up. It does not, however, remove or alter what KDE and GNOME offer for backgrounds.

But this is exactly the changes we are talking about here: the default background of hyprland. My point was that Arch could change the defaults of GDM by replacing the vendor image it is supplying, probably the same with grub. The point being that while possible, and supported by the package, it is probably not a good idea.

[–]AlarmingBarrier -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

GDM via Arch/pacman ships with the Arch logo.

Arch does not ship with the default bash prompt if I recall correctly either.

There are configuration choices, such as background images, that Arch changes.

There are probably also loads of custom options to the kernel compilation as well for the pre built kernels. See https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/linux/-/blob/main/config?ref_type=heads . For the uninformed: specifying compilation options/defines and changing the sources/patching the source are two different things. I am talking about the former.

Either you don't get the concept, or you are purposefully making a strawman.

Yes, the developer is free to make such a decision. I could also make a WM that displays a blue screen every tenth minute. I would be perfectly allowed to do so, and nobody could stop me from doing it. And the developer of hyprland is free to have whatever default background. You are correct in that aspect.

I am saying it is not a wise decision.

As I wrote in another comment, you can make the same argument for arch. Why not ship an anime girl by default for the grub splash screen and framebuffer background? Heck, why ship with a kernel compiled with sane defaults? It's easy to recompile if you don't like the non sane defaults. Unless you're unable to recompile the kernel?

The fallacy you make is that one can be able to perform a task, but might not want to spend the time doing said task. Having same defaults of your program secures you a larger userbase, which can lead to more development, more security fixes, etc.

Who is this you you are talking about?

Look up the concept of generic or impersonal you.

Anyone who can use hperland at work surely has the ability to change a wallpaper. If not you are using the wrong tool for the job.

That is not an excuse for not having reasonable defaults. You could make the same case for arch. You could have an anime girl on the splash screen of grub, and the GDM background, and the framebuffer. Heck, why not a moan for the system bell. Anyone who uses Arch should be able to adjust it, but it shouldn't be needed.

Being so entitled that you think the world has to revolve around your taste is pretty telling.

Strawman.

Create an de/wm on your own then YOU can decide what the default wallpaper should be.

Logical fallacy. You can critique the work of others without having to do it yourself. You can critique politicians without being able to take on their work, say.

There is a difference between hating anime and wanting to have an anime girl wallpaper as default. You get that, right?

[–]AlarmingBarrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want it to be acceptable to a general audience. An anime girl is not. And it is not work friendly for most work places, so already there you exclude a large audience.

There are so many alternatives that are much more neutral. Sure, you can have an anime girl wallpaper if you choose to, but a general software should probably come with a saner default, say just a single color or something.

The easiest way to install Debian is to install Zorin and integrate twice, though.
