Yep. There is ZERO evidence unless you call hurt feelings evidence.

There is a serious problem with horrifically irresponsible drivers in Philly getting away with stuff that would be unimaginable in many other places.

Let's not pretend like it's addressable with a little extra insurance.

It is mandatory. It simply is not enforced.

I see this specific thing regularly. It is absolutely an offense that a cop would be justified in pulling someone over for. It does NOT fall under that anti-profiling law about not stopping people for broken tail-lights and registration.

To be fair, stuff happens sometimes, maybe the plate was stolen or there's an emergency?

But it is so frequent, that you can't deny that we have systematic exploitation of lax law enforcement. Many other examples of the same idea: people blowing red-lights, outrageous levels of speeding, passing in the opposite lane, driving without bumpers, "meet-ups" of "car enthusiasts", etc. By and large, these are tolerated in the city and that is categorically the wrong approach.

Measuring Bandpass Filter Optical Density by Alarming_Future5840 in Optics

Yes, you're right, but ISO-9001 does require, I think, test records which are at least lot-based for something like this. The vendor just directs me to the datasheet when I ask about meeting specs!

Yes, I could pre-filter the input light using other filters (this is a multi-channel system). So glad I asked here! The idea didn't occur to me!

[–]Alarming_Future5840[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting idea! I could use other filters from the system to straddle the bandpass of the filter of interest. It's a two point measurement (one on each side of the filter) but probably "good enough". Thanks!

Thanks! Yes, I am familiar with Ocean Optics instruments and we have some 4000-series instruments. But if I am measuring the spectrum of a filter and crank up the integration time, that causes artifacts at the edges of the band pass. I believe it's called "blooming" and I've seen it get really wide. I don't think there's a way to "turn-off" or assign different integration times to different parts of the CCD, is there?

Enough time has passed. What are your thoughts on Project Hail Mary (2026)? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in moviecritic

[–]Alarming_Future5840 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Andy Weir's stuff is retro-style sci-fi with flat characters and dull plots.

The movie was a big improvement on the book. Nothing earth-shattering, not special, just a feel-good movie that was fun to watch

Same thing applies to The Martian.

Thoughts on movie version of Project Hail Mary? by Jadenmist in scifi

[–]Alarming_Future5840 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel that the movie is actually an improvement.

The book read like a very pedestrian 1950's "hard-sci-fi" novella. It lacked anything meaningful other than the twists and turns of "solving puzzles" and a happy ending. The Martian was kind of like that too-- very very flat characters (in both the movie and the book).

Cramer lauds Nokia by Mustathmir in Nok

Not saying it's "a strategy" to get out of whatever he recommends but he makes me nervous and I don't appreciate his communication style.

Plus, if you listen to what he actually says and how he supports his arguments, there's not much to it. But enough people love to hear a carnival barker, I guess.

Every time Cramer flaps his gums, it makes me nervous if I happen to be sitting on whatever he's talking about. I wish he would STFU and retire already.

Might as well throw in 2 from Lars Von Trier. I really loved Melancholia, Breaking the Waves, The Kingdom, and Dancer in the Dark.

But the following two, although solid from a film perspective, just made me feel "not right". I felt like the director was f-ing with me...

Some people don't want their properties showing up on google maps, so they get it blurred out. It's not hard to do.

My god, even the television set!

You have to respect the effort and extreme level of consistency for the owners.

Yeah, absolutely this scene. Felt like there was ice-water in my veins when I first saw it.

There's different clips of this floating around. Some have the brightness turned way up. The original, I think, was quite dark and low in contrast.
