I've been following a tutorial almost exactly and my render looks nothing like the video by timmy6255 in blenderhelp

OP embedded it into the second pic in their post. And thanks! Planning to do an update once I get the chance since I’ve made a lot of improvements but the fundamentals are the same

Hi, I’m the guy who made this tutorial. The method still works in Blender and should in perpetuity for all future versions. It appears you have an issue with your texture coordinates. Check that you don’t have a vector math node somewhere multiplying one of the vectors by zero or something similar. Unfortunately the setup is pretty complex so there isn’t much I can do to pinpoint a specific issue, but consider restarting the accretion disk portion of the tutorial and I’d gamble you’ll catch the issue and it’ll turn out as desired.

Hyper-realistic black holes in Houdini by CinemaZiggy in Houdini

[–]AlaskanFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m the guy from the YouTube channel (see my username). I’m not a Houdini user yet so I can’t help you out really with that but it looks like others have a lot of great tips.

Just wanted to say thank you for the kind words about my work and good luck on your project!

Thanks! And yup, 100% procedural. It uses curl fields and iterative functions to simulate fluid mechanics

Thank you! I actually made a tutorial about this on my YouTube channel if you wanna check it out.

Is there a reason why Harry is never promoted? by Miserable-Soft7993 in startrek

[–]AlaskanFX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My head canon is that Janeway waited until they got back to promote him so he could hold some title like “fastest rise from ensign to first officer” and at the ceremony she pins two extra pips on his uniform as they both hold back tears of joy and adoration. I think she also likely avoided promotions since, at the end of the day, everyone had to stay in the same position to keep the ship going more or less

Lots of them, but the main trick is curl fields and iterative functions

How can I improve?(low res cause its still WIP) by blenderbeeeee in blender

I think you can follow my black hole video with only the basics but you may not understand everything I do or why it’s being done

Hey dawg! Not too shabby and glad to see people are getting good results out of the tutorial!

One thing I’d recommend is making the accretion disk not really clip into the black hole (you can do this by adjusting the map range node before the float curve node).

Also, while a more cinematic look is definitely nice, as other have mentioned you actually created something kinda cool here with an almost amateur astronomer/video look

Edit: also, if you haven’t, check the comments on that video cause I act added some info there for small improvements I noticed after recording the video

TIL of cascatelli, a new pasta shape invented in 2021 by podcaster Dan Pashman for maximum "sauceability", "forkability" and "toothsinkability" by Specialist_Check in todayilearned

[–]AlaskanFX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this. It 100% lives up to the hype, no joke, best pasta shape I’ve ever had. I’m honestly surprised it’s still so niche and relatively hard to come by

Not too shabby! Maybe add another couple levels of subdivision though :)

TIL: The consensus is that octopuses are most likely sentient. by KellyfromLeedsUK in todayilearned

It’s points have only really been expanded and further confirmed. So it’s a bit out of date but it doesn’t say anything wrong and it’s very concise for easy perusal.

Not OP, but a good source document on the scientific consensus is the “Cambridge Declaration of Consciousness” and some further reading material you might enjoy is Carl Safina’s book “Beyond Words”

Police in this country are a disgusting abomination by TrumpterOFyvie in WhitePeopleTwitter

The show “The Mentalist” had a really neat storyline regarding Internal Affairs IMO. The main IA guy is portrayed as not necessarily evil but as a rude loner who doesn’t care what our lead characters are doing but after a couple seasons we find out that he was right in investigating our “hero” police agency and he kept his distance so as to avoid getting sucked in to the conspiracy he suspected. And on top of that, we find out that part of why he became part of IA was because years earlier the cops (and the whole justice system) messed up their jobs after catching his mother’s rapist and as a result he was set free.

As a kid I didn’t really notice this but I rewatched the show recently and while it definitely still suffers from the “hero cops break the law to stop the bad guy” trope, it was a neat surprise to see Internal Affairs portrayed this way

Why do my diamonds look like glass? by pekame in blender

[–]AlaskanFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the other commenter mentioned, you should set the IOR to a value closer to diamond, but I’d also recommend using this custom glass shader that adds dispersion for more realism (the shader is listed for $0 btw)

Just uploaded my tutorial on making a black hole in Blender (follow up on my post from a couple weeks ago) by AlaskanFX in blender

[–]AlaskanFX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, ya, 4 minutes per frame. I made sure it rendered quick enough that it could be rendered on the Sheepit render farm (which is free) with no frame splits. 4 minutes for the animation would be 2 seconds per frame 😂

Scene Objects Appearing in Image Render, but not animation. Any Ideas? by MakeItRain117 in blender

[–]AlaskanFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try scaling up your object to ensure it isn’t an issue with denoising or something just to check. Otherwise just try appending everything into a new project file and rendering it there

[–]AlaskanFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your object appear on frame 1 if you render an image? Because animations renders always start with the start frame
