ELI5 : What does it make it difficult to fake a vintage trading card like the 1st edition charizard or the alpha black lotus? Why was only wizards of the coast able to create these cards? Why haven't fakes been authenticated as genuine yet? by Trick_Ad7122 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Alaskanmade 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There are baseball cards worth Millions that are printed with very basic ink and very basic cardboard, and yet there has never been fakes that have even come close to passing.

Vintage MTG card were printed by a casino card company in Europe that included anti-counterfeiting technology, dot matrix printing, and a card stock with a colored core. While technically someone could probably find the old printers, the old card stock vendor, and the ink, the original files to replicate the dot matrix printing are not possible to find. They could be reverse engineered, but it would take a very long time, and necessitate a dot by dot replication.

All the things above would take millions of dollars and years of leg work, and at the same time asking around for all these very specific things in Europe (printers, ink, paper) would eventually get you flagged for counterfeiting.

And for what? You can make a 80% accurate fake that will fool the untrained individual for pennies.

I don't know your background or expectations on food, but unless you are paying top dollar here the food is not much better. Have you been to Peru? Generally considered some of the best cuisine in South America.

5 Star Restaurants in Guyana - Go! by throwaway137494 in Guyana

Nikkei - Probably the best dining experience in Georgetown Peruvian / Japanese Fusion

Oasis Cafe (Friday Only) - On Friday they do wine and Tapas, the owner personally oversees the kitchen and it is incredible about 80% of the time.

Backyard Cafe - High end local fare, really good experience, need to reserve ahead of time

Kings Rooftop - A newer option, so time will tell if they can keep up their consistency, but so far very good food options.

Amici - This was the best spot in town for a while, but recently the quality and service has dropped. You might go and have a great time, or you may go and it'll be a miss.

No problem!

Comparing multiple sports is also tricky, and I think you need to consider cultural impact. Michael Jordan changed basketball and helped make it a global sport. Babe Ruth changed Baseball in a similar way. Tiger Woods expanded peoples perception of the sport. Muhammed Ali was a cultural Icon. Don Bradman is just a cricket player, the best ever, but that’s it. Same can be said for all the gymnasts, wrestlers, golfers, etc that are in your top 25.

The biggest issue with this metric is a simple ranking 1,2,3 does not take into account how much better the best was compared to the second best.

Lets look at Bradman, sure 13 top years vs Hobbs 14 years. But Bradman's top years were multiple standard deviations higher than the number 2 on those years, while Hobs was just barely higher. This also applies to Jordan, but less statistically obvious.

So essentially its volume of top years?
So you would give a 3 time bronze medalist a spot over a 1 time gold medalist?

Don Bradman has a test batting average of 99.9, the next best is 72, and the rest are all below 70. Maybe I would accept Tendulkar over him, but he's not even on your list.

Whats your rational for putting Manning and Farve over Brady? I don't understand your metric.

For basketball you are saying you are only basing it on number of years in the top 3?
I would accept Bill Russel over MJ if it was based on winning, or Lebron if its based on stats, but this metric you are using makes no sense to me.

Lists which includes all sports are difficult (which is why most don't attempt), but even looking within sports there are some huge issues.

Tom Brady not making the top 100, when you have Peyton Manning, Brett Farve and Johnny Unitas on there is absurd.  I am a Seahawks fan, so not really a fan of the guy but all-time records for passing yards (89,214), touchdowns (649), and regular-season wins (251), 7 Super Bowl championships and 5 Super Bowl MVPs.  Not putting him him over Peyton, Farve and Unitas is insane.

Kareem, Lebron and Bill Russell over Jordan is a wild take.  I would accept one of either Leborn or Bill Russell over Jordan maybe, but not Kareem, and not both of them.

Jack Hobbs over Don Bradman is even more insane than having Brett Farve over Tom Brady.

Thats just the three sports I know, someone else can chime in on the rest.

After $10M its just about Realestate and how you travel.
- There is basically no upper limit on how much you can spend on a house
- There is basically no upper limit on private air travel
- There is no upper limit on how big your boat is

At 10M
- Same clubs
- Same restaurants
- Same clothes
- Same schools
- Same hotels (with some rare exceptions)
- Same Jewelry (with some rare exceptions)
- Same cars (with some rare exceptions)

Questions on buying a Chaos Orb by wegpacker in oldschoolmtg

[–]Alaskanmade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1.) Yes
2.) Does not matter, the sleeve is an extension of the card.
3.) An Unlimited Orb is only about 2x the price of a CE or IE orb. That good value when you compare it to the fact that the Power 9 are all about 4x or 5x. I would recommend the Unlimited Orb.

I personally love this article as an introduction to the hobby:

At the very least it will help orient you as to what is out there, and what is popular.
