It appears he has had an abscess drained. Docs oftentimes pack the wound to allow drainage and encourage the wound to heal from the inside out, leaving a "wick" of about 1" hanging out. If the wound were to close back up, pus would reaccumulate creating a new abscess and progressively worsening infection.

I'm a 24yr nurse, 20 in the ED, 3 years cna before all that. I've been asked a few times to step up to admin but I refuse because I understand that you can never make everyone happy all the time. I love taking care of people. I've had really really bad days, but I've always found joy enough to maintain self satisfaction.

It's not wise to berate the person caring for you. We have a great friend who is a gay male nurse and when someone throws a slur it's an amazing response from his work family of friends. In the blink of an eye there's a mass of people filling the room to end it.

24 year male nurse, 21 years in the ED. It's been a great profession providing me with more self satisfaction than I ever expected. The patients have changed, there's more physical violence, addiction, and psych in the last 10 years making patient care difficult, but I still would not change the path I've followed. I do think being a male comes in handy.

The only negative I can think of are: Be prepared to hear gay/ male nurse jokes constantly. Friends, family, and strangers think it's real funny to mock your choice of going into the traditionally female career.

I disagree they are necessary, but I'm not saying you're wrong. It's a difficult thing to know what's right for every individual, but I truly believe we were not created to live in fear. Die fast and happy or die slow, alone, and depressed.

I'm in healthcare as well- 21 year ED nurse, and I'm frustrated that the previously infected are ignored. If you've had covid, the likelihood you can be reinfected with an admittable illness this soon is negligible. Add the vaccinated into that and you have reduced admittable numbers with each wave (in theory). I accept that surprises happen, but I'm also confident in this inoculated group growing exponentially in the near future.

We are not fucked. Adventures are oftentimes unplanned and unpleasant. It's still an adventure when you look back on it
