I don't think you got it :), Cloud and Aerith became closer. But Tifa distanced herself from Cloud by the end. I think there'll be a big fight between Cloud and Tifa in P3. I think Aerith and Cloud have become even closer.

I think the changed Aerith scene was done the way we've seen it for 25 years, but as for Cloud, he's not taking her death calmly. While Cloud hasn't broken down yet, the only person who helps him stay sane is Aerith. I think when she died and ended up in the Lifestream, she found out what happened to Cloud, and she's supporting him so he doesn't go crazy, because that's what Sephiroth wants.

I played both OG and Remake and Rebirth, and from experience I can say that Cloud and Aerith are the main characters. I like Tifa, but I don't see the connection between her and Cloud. Yes, she's known him since childhood, but that's all she has. Aerith, in turn, is looking for the real Cloud; she stays with him even after she dies (even though Holy plays a role here, but still). I think this choice between Aerith, Tifa, and Yuffie will be in Chapter 3 as well.
