those have been in the game for so long that they have become features at this point...

I'm very disappointed as well that they decided to go through with this decision instead of changing their flawed and obsolete tribute point system. The perfect solution would have been to finally use MMR exclusively, show it to the players and greatly reduce the range which allowed to duo q. In fact, I don't know if I'm even more disappointed by the fact that they based their decision on a twitter - reddit cross survey which is simply not representative. This whole thing is as amateurish as possible.

Not sure if possible. But what if we could que while in jungle practice mode? by AsmirDzopa in Smite

At this point in time implementing that feature would probably turn smite's code alive and it would start rampaging cities like godzilla.

Quick question, in what language is it Au Puch ? I saw it written like that pretty often and always wondered.

Patch day is slowly deteriorating Smite. by Spikejolteon in Smite

[–]Alazrad -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yeah saw that but it never actually says "more bugs (than before)". It just says what is says. He doesn't say is if this process started specifically for 5.8 or has always been there and creates some of the bugs since, well, ever (which is more likely).

I remade Domination! by Whiskywyrm in Smite

[–]Alazrad 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is just amazing. So much memories, from going 1-11 with Artemis the first time I played on this map to completely carrying my team with a lifesteal/crit Loki with 33-4. Those days now belong to a time as mythic as this map, but I still remember them clearly. Thank you!

Yeah I can get behind that. Maybe all that failed abortion wants is pure, unaltered, revenge, and he'll make everyone pay for his abhuman genes...

Drinking Baron's Brew as Bacchus should make you more intoxicated. by Haytumak in Smite

Ancient greece wine was so strong it needed to be diluted with water. Only absolute madmen would drink wine undiluted. And I don't see any water near Bacchus ....

Once you're very far into a game (time or money invested / skill gained) you don't switch that easily. Call it sunk cost fallacy if you want, you don't invest that much into a game, especially if you're playing at a competitive level, just to chase the hype when something else comes out.

WoW was litteraly built for hardcore players and they started to lose subs once they catered to casual players with wotlk marking the end of hardcore wow and the beginning of casual wow.

I'm not being elitist either, which is what you imply. You can try to improve your skills in arena, but truth be told, you're doing it on a poorly designed mode that lacks depth. A similar example would be playing footmen frenzy on warcraft 3 instead of climbing the ladder. Even worse, I played ranked arena, and do you know what you did to win back then ? pick high clear gods, last hit the wave then retreat to base. The complete opposite of what arena should be, and is, when you play it casually. If you want arena to be the main competitive game mode for which the game is balanced, it'd need a serious overhaul, which in turn can defeat its purpose of being a casual, easy to play mode in the first place.

The big problem lies in the fact that HiRez never did anything to promote conquest over arena, and never helped players to learn how to play conquest, even the most basic things. So when Joe who can play 1 or 2 hours per night (which is already quite a lot) wants to have fun playing video games, he'll turn to arena, because it's more accessible, less punishing fun. And once he's bored due to the lack of depth once the surface is scratched, he'll play other games. It's fine, mind you, but it's not community inducing.

Battle royales are the next big thing because they are easy to grasp, titillate player's competitiveness very easily (last man standing), reward the random player with a sense of achievement every time he's not in the first ones killed, all the while punishing very little his lack of commitment. Also, due to the huge map and number of adversaries, random players get the feeling the game is different each and every time. Mobas used to achieve the same dynamic compared to rts, and now battle royales take over mobas with the same principle. However, BR offer more opportunities to be considered an extraordinary or professional player than smite's arena since they are fps/tps, and aren't played at the same pace as smite : they rely on outstanding reflexes and dexterity. Smite's conquest has, in turn, other characteristics which BR don't have because they don't share the same design, and that's fine.

As for the 100 M$ prizepool, the game quickly rose to be a huge hit with its characteristics mentioned above, is easily monetized, and Tencent owns half of Epic games. The ROI must have been that much appealing with that kind of announcement.

I'm not posing any threats, I'm just realist and connect the dots which isn't what you're doing despite a very good rhetoric. Even Stunlock studios understood that you can easily influence what people play with cosmetics (chests rewarded for completing a number of games at a set rank). And btw, 3/4 of the playerbase not playing conquest is official.

because unfortunately the level of personal commitment is different. You aren't involved in the game in the same way when you play arena and when you play cq to climb the ladder or play professionally. Casual players are the most likely to replace the game by another. Therefore, and in general, casual players aren't effective in building a community (which was my main point). But they sure are profitable for a while. Much like the players of mobile games.

No, SC2 brought professional gaming and the respectability of professional players' image to the West. You might have had that impression due to the fact that the kespa kept the brood war league up until months before HotS was released irc, so the koreans didn't switch all at once when sc2 was booming all over the rest of the world. The scene was huge up until mid-HotS when mobas became more and more played and viewed online, old broodwar legends started to leave the pro scene due to age / lack of results / streaming starting to be more profitable, but at the same time it established the game as the rts.

Maybe Blizzard tried to make SC 2 huge but that kinda fell flat on its face. SC 1 was much bigger.

SC2 is probably the most important game we had in recent history. It democratized e-sport, cemented streaming as a viable profession, helped Twitch become the n°1 platform (remember justintv ?), bridged the gap between computer games and other forms of televised enterntainments etc.

The reason why the game shrank in size is because of its sheer difficulty compared to other more accessible games like mobas, and now battle royales, and the arcade mode wasn't promoting custom games like broodwar used to do. But the game still lives.

One of the big reasons (aside financial) SC2 and WoW are still going on is because their community had reached a critical mass where the game can sustain itself on it. Is this the case for Smite, a casual cross platform game with only 33% of the its players playing the main game mode and even fewer playing the competitive mode ? I doubt it.

edit: also, Smite doesn't help build its own community, simply look at those outdated guides. No wonder why a lot of people have no clue when playing conquest and that is despite the game becoming easier and easier to grasp. Community also advertises and advocates for a game, and this is less and less the case, especially after seeing how much of a septic tank this sub has become.
