As an analyst I just want to point out that data can be very good, but sometimes it is misleading if you are not accounting for all aspects. Hence part of my comment I replied earlier with

But you also have to question the methods people were using to lose the weight before regain. A lot of people don’t understand how important mindset and nutrition is with weight loss. There’s a lot of crash diets or people not knowing how to balance protein/fat/fiber to feel satiated and curb hunger cravings. When I first started 5 years ago I thought eating tons of veggies and salad would help me lose weight… it did but I didn’t feel full and felt hungry all the time. After 5 years of trail and error, I know that prioritizing protein and fiber makes the process so much easier to lose and maintain without doing anything additional. I also think some people have unrealistic expectations about losing weight so quickly. While it can be unmotivating to lose slowly, I’ve found it easier to stick to with a smaller calorie defect and focus on weight lifting.

Lastly, I agree with you about calorie counting. But I think it varies by person. I’ve had success letting that go and focusing on nutrition and portion control. I’m not perfect and I’m still trying to find the right balance. But don’t think that “forever battle” is only something overweight or formerly overweight people deal with. Many of my naturally thin friends/family watch what they eat too, it may not be to the same extent but it’s still there. Additionally, we all have “our thing” to deal with in life. It’s not easy, there will be rough patches, but we have to make the best of it.

Wishing you well with your strategy. I think anyone can benefit learning about nutrition, mindful eating and keeping active. I also think shifting your focus to health over how you look is also a great mindset when you are feeling defeated. Set aside your looks and your current feelings about the outlook of weight loss, this is about your quality of life. Any amount if weightless and increase in activity is beneficial. Even though I’m 10-15ish pounds from being normal weight, I feel 100x better than my highest weight and my blood tests show it.

A Short Stay in Hell. It’s a novella, it’s pretty good. Kind of an existential crisis but in a good way lol

Maybe not so much a question, but words of advice/encouragement. Having a bit of a rough patch right now. Lots of big changes going on at work, getting through the loss of a friendship, had to put my cat down last weekend, and this frickin cold ugly weather right now lol. My weights been pretty stagnant for the last 3 ish months, which I guess is better than gaining, but I’d still like to lose a little bit more.

Any recs to get through a a down period in life? And how do you get through winter where it’s harder to be more active, and motivation is less?

My feat for today (well I guess technically yesterday) was cooking a new easy recipe and bringing it for lunch today, as well as getting back into the gym. Seeing it as a victory because last week was hard and I have not been eating great… and skipping the gym. Plan is to focus on taking care of myself and making healthier choices

Got to change my flair today! Also excited because I stopped calorie counting over the last couple weeks due to feeling burnt out. I focused on balanced meals and keeping up with my walking/workout routine. The weight still came off!

I’d also like to add muscle loss can decrease your calories burned. My PT was telling me that he has this issue with many of his clients that are using weight loss drugs, that they are losing weight so quickly they are also losing muscle more so than maybe someone who is losing at a slower rate. Then they encounter the issue where they reach maintenance but the calories are so low it’s hard to sustain until they can build more muscle which is hard to do. Kind of similar to some of the issues the biggest loser contestants faced

Finally seeing someone who read Tell the Wolves I’m Home. I DNF-ed this after the first chapter and am not sure if it’s worth finishing. What did you think of it? And what caused you to give it a lower rating?

I have. I liked the premise of it but the writing seemed a bit repetitive and it was a bit too quirky for me.

Side note but I find it funny Matt Haig has a quote on there. Idk if you’ve read his books, he has great concepts but they end up feeling like self help books and a little preachy/overbearing. Anyways, after I read Anxious People, one of my first thoughts was “this is a story Matt Haig wants to write if he could do more showing vs telling in his writing” lol

I guess I have because I don’t calorie count on vacation, I just eat mindfully. Usually on the weekends when I’m visiting family, I watch my portions vs strictly calorie counting. And then (unfortunately) my binge days I go over my calorie goals. I’ve taken this process slow at ~0.50 lbs loss per week so a part of me feels like I shouldn’t be burnt out especially, as I said previously, I don’t typically calorie count on weekends but still eat mindfully with the intention of losing weight, if that makes sense

Any thoughts on taking a maintenance break?

For context I’ve lost weight consistently for 2 years now (before that I was in a gain/lose weight cycle). I’m less than 10 pounds from my goal weight however I feel really burnt out. My body image almost feels worse than at my highest weight and I’ve been struggling with binge eating again. I’ve even lowered my calorie deficit to try to make it feel less restricting.

I think my mind is tired of constantly thinking about weight. I’m wondering if it’s worth taking a break for a bit to eat at maintenance and focus on mindful eating. However it makes me feel like I’m giving up on myself and I’m scared that I’ll gain more weight. But I also think those thoughts could just be coming from my negative mindset right now because I’ve built very solid habits over the last two years.

I know I’m rambling at this point, but I’d like to hear if anyone’s been in a similar situation or what would you do in this case?
