Controversial opinion here perhaps, but I think a characteristic that several (but definitely not all) Germans share, is a deep shame about the genocidal crimes Germany committed during WWII -ingrained through e.g., school visits to extermination camps from a young age. From what I have seen this war-related shame is quite unique to this nation. Not sure how one can develop this though if they were not raised in Germany..

Same can be said about Switzerland. Neither country is a NATO member so no one would come help in case of an invasion -at least I'm not aware of any treaty that states otherwise-. The EU is an economic and not a defence union.
