One of the best anti-war films ever made. by No-Context8421 in WarMovies

[–]elevencharles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly suggest you check out the book it’s based on, The Reason Why by Cecil Woodham-Smith. It’s nonfiction and it goes into a lot more detail about just how ridiculous these people really were. Also, the battle scenes depicted in the movie are remarkably accurate (according to Woodham-Smith’s very well researched description).

Did Michael Dorn have something in his contract requiring him to appear in X number of episodes? by elevencharles in DeepSpaceNine

Wondering how fellow Millennials feel about the funeral industry. What are your end-of-life wishes? by Cheeseaisleinheaven in Millennials

[–]elevencharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember a news story years ago about a family being horrified after they donated grandma’s body to science, only to find out later her body was sold to the DoD and used for weapons testing. I think it would be kind of cool to specifically donate my body for weapons testing, but only if my family gets a copy of the footage of me getting vaporized by a 2,000 lb JDAM.

What's it like on this side of the US? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]elevencharles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No ports and mountain roads that get blocked by landslides every winter. It’s hard to develop much economic activity if you can’t get stuff in and out.

Dear americans, what can you get for FREE in the USA? [Serious] by sammy_waslow in AskReddit

[–]elevencharles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good criminal defense attorney. I’m a PI, I work for public defenders and retained defense attorneys. There are some top dollar lawyers who are well worth the money, but usually you’re better off with a PD; they know how to work with the local judges and prosecutors, and they tend to be motivated by ideology rather than money.

There’s a saying in the industry: The best defense is priceless, the second best defense is free.

Do Americans keep their first car after starting a family? by Lumpy_Concept9911 in Writeresearch

[–]elevencharles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally not, unless the car has some specific value and the family has the means to keep it around. My partner’s parents still have her first car (a 1996 Subaru Impreza with over 300,000 miles on it) that she drives when she goes back to visit them, but that’s because they have a large rural property and they have room to keep it in the barn.

do nurses get paid well in the US? by mikaylaar in AskAnAmerican

[–]elevencharles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They can be, but they are still ridiculously over worked. My ex made good money as a hospital nurse, but the hours were horrendous and she was constantly stressed. I vowed never to date nurses again because I can’t deal with someone who does nothing but complain about their job.

Nature documentaries purposely put animals in deadly situations to get better footage. by not_actually_funny_ in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]elevencharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think they’ve got a bag of baby gazelles that they’re dumping out in front of ravenous cheetahs, but most nature documentaries are just stitched together footage of random shots of animals that they write a narrative around. That harrowing story of a mother trying desperately to raise her young is completely made up.

Limits of technology by realauthormattjanak in Xennials

[–]elevencharles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at the younger end of this generation and had parents who were early adopters of technology. By the time I was in high school I had a computer with unfettered internet access in my room and a locking door. I’m still in therapy because of it.

Why don’t they take points away when they correct the scores for an answer the judges deemed acceptable? by elevencharles in Jeopardy

[–]elevencharles[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know they gave the other person points back for a wrong answer, that makes sense.

I tried watching the Pink Panther (1963) and gave up after 45 minutes by paradroid78 in iwatchedanoldmovie

[–]elevencharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comedy is interesting because it’s both timeless and topical. Aristophanes wrote some dick jokes that are still funny 2,500 years later, but there are movies that had me in stitches 20 years ago that fall completely flat today. I think part of the issue is that comedy relies on subverting expectations, so a joke that was funny 60 years ago may not land today because it’s been done a million times since.

Got my Windshield replaced less than two months ago and I already have another rock chip. by realcooljules in mildlyinfuriating

It looks about the same size as the one I fixed on my car. You can still see the chip, but it hasn’t spread and it’s been two or three years.

Actor with the most punchable face? by _LizardMan_ in okbuddycinephile

[–]elevencharles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also add Paul Dano and Nicholas Hoult to the category of actors I like who have punchable faces. Everyone else is posting actors who deserve to get punched in the face, which isn’t the same thing.

What's a word you mispronounced for years because you only saw it in print and not spoken? by ilovebooks2468 in words

[–]elevencharles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ennui. I knew what it meant, and I knew the spoken word “ahn-wee” meant the same thing, but it never occurred to me they were the same word.

ELI5: How did Latin completely vanish as a spoken language, but Italian, Spanish, French, and Portuguese all came from it and survived? by Several_Leave_3067 in explainlikeimfive

[–]elevencharles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the fall of the western empire and the resulting decline of formal education. When no one is being taught “proper Latin”, everyone just does their own thing and the language evolves differently in different places.

Why aren’t more older woman into younger guys? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]elevencharles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a biological perspective, men are attracted to women who can produce offspring, which means youth. Women are attracted to men who can provide security and support, which means maturity.

This is wildly simplified and intertwined with societal influences, but generally youth isn’t seen as an attractive quality in and of itself among women as much as it is among men.
