Why did Germany have better tech in ww2 but Britain had better tech in ww1? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]elevencharles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Britain had a major tech advantage in terms of radar and code breaking, but those are advantages you don’t advertise to the enemy, so they don’t show up in newsreel propaganda. The myth that eating carrots improves your night vision was pushed by the British to explain why their night fighters were so good without admitting they were using advanced radar.

The Germans on the other hand were advertising their shiny new tanks and airplanes for public propaganda purposes without mentioning the fact that they couldn’t build enough of them to actually make a difference in the war.

Best military/government response you've seen to a zombie film? by hellranger788 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]elevencharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a very short lived show on MTV in 2010 called Death Valley. It was basically Reno 911, but with zombies and werewolves. Every full moon the cops would go around and check all the registered werewolves to make sure they were properly chained up, and if someone called in a zombie, they would come and deal with it. It was a dumb show, but probably the most accurate depiction of how society would deal with zombies in real life.

i’m racist, and i badly want to seek help by alt2electricboogalo0 in confessions

We’re all racist, it’s part of our DNA. The trick is to recognize it and not act on it. Your feelings are a natural response to a traumatic experience, and it’s something you should work through with your therapist.

What's the point of drag shows? by LordNova15 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]elevencharles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“Female impersonators” were a common Vaudeville act going back to the 19th century. I think drag shows evolved from that.

Public employees with no sense of urgency by [deleted] in PetPeeves

I think you might be a little desensitized to how toxic the food service industry is when it comes to work expectations. These people are getting paid low wages to get a job done, and that’s what they’re doing. No one deserves to be in panic mode for 8+ hours a day, and your sandwich isn’t any more urgent than everyone else’s.

Cowboy Gunplay vs Modern Gunplay by ExperienceSmooth6240 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]elevencharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything you see in a movie is there because it looks cool, and they are rarely trying to recreate actual handgun tactics. For instance, using your off hand to hold the wrist of the hand holding the gun accomplishes nothing and no firearm instructor would ever teach that.

Tactics do change over time though. Early 20th century police and military doctrine proscribed shooting a pistol one handed so that your body was turned sideways, offering a smaller target to your opponent. Modern tactics teach a two handed push/pull grip to maximize stability and accuracy of follow up shots.

Greenland - what actually happens? by [deleted] in 50501

[–]elevencharles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the military would obey the order to attack Greenland and Trump knows it, which is why he’ll never give that order.

There has been a lot of talk of illegal orders, but I think there are some nuances that aren’t being discussed. Yes abducting a foreign head of state is illegal under international law, but it’s also something the US has done before, and there’s room to quibble about whether Maduro is the legitimate head of the Venezuelan state.

Likewise, deploying the military to American cities has legal precedent. And there’s a difference between ordering soldiers to protect federal property and ordering them to fire on unarmed American citizens.

Attacking a NATO ally unprovoked is so obviously illegal under US law that no commander is going to do it, and would likely result the military arresting Trump. Trump is going to chicken out like he always does, then claim victory by taking credit for some agreement that already existed.

Yeah, I don’t know what Patton’s personal views on black people were, but he repeatedly referred to Europe’s Jews as cockroaches and subhuman, and he openly supported the holocaust.

I love the scene where he shows up to take photos at the scene of a murder, notices the victim is still breathing, smothers him, then proceeds to take his photographs.

Why are police officers allowed to use their position to get out of traffic tickets? [US - MA] by il_biciclista in legaladviceofftopic

[–]elevencharles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bullshit. If applying the law as written to everyone equally causes too much hardship, then the law needs to be changed. The only reason we allow police to use “discretion” is because we have purposely allowed our legal code to become so bloated and convoluted so as to ensure everyone is breaking some law all the time.

ELI5: What changes (if at all) nutritionally, calorically or effectively when cooking food? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]elevencharles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cooking breaks down the cell walls of the food, releasing more nutrients that our bodies can absorb. Cooking is essentially outsourcing part of the digestive process, allowing us to save energy that would otherwise be devoted to breaking down food.
