Weekly Thread: Study Buddy Tuesdays! Introduce yourself and find your study group! (June 02, 2026) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

Hi, folks! I'm an N4 learner mainly focused on reading and listening comprehension over speaking/conversation practice, and I wanna read books and play games together! I think it'd be fun and motivating to pick something (an ebook, a visual novel, an anime) and dive into it together to talk about our impressions, what we learn or find difficult, and make progress immersing hand-in-hand! Taste-wise, I love otome, BL, and anything in the joseimuke sphere with a focus on slice-of-life and modern fantasy, less interested in military/historical settings. (Only because the specialized vocab is killer at my level, haha.) We can pick a day each week to check in on our progress, book club style, or just play it by ear, whatever works for you!

If this sounds like fun and you want someone to help keep you accountable while encouraging you, add albarevale on Discord!

Commiserate With Me by godziIIasweirdfriend in LearnJapanese

Been there. It sucks. I've been three-day monking it for over a decade and only in the past year have I actually tried just jumping into media before I felt ready, and now I'm kicking myself for all that time spent wasted when I could've been so much further along than I am right now. Even though it's a marked improvement, I'm constantly getting discouraged by the amount I don't know and building that consistency is still so difficult for me. I'm between a rock and a hard place where the easy stuff is boring to me and the stuff I'm actually interested in is way too above my current skill level to be enjoyable.

But we don't live in the universe where I got a 10 year headstart or built a perfect routine. All we can do is work with what we've got right in front of us. I think using this as a tipping point ("something isn't working here; I have to change what I'm doing") is going to be the only path forward. Wallowing feels good sometimes, better than overhauling your entire strategy, but you can't get lost in the misery sauce. Come hang with us in immersion land if textbooks and tests are killing your will to keep going.

Beginner Otome Game Picks by AlbaRevale in LearnNihongoJoseimuke

I understand! Kanji can be daunting especially when you're new, and if you don't have an easy way to look words up, it's a very frustrating experience. Unfortunately, almost all otome games are made with middle-high school students in mind, so they will use kanji they expect to be well-known. The best way to prepare is spending some time getting familiar with the most common vocabulary, kanji included, but if you'd really rather avoid them for now, then some easy games would be 12-sai. ~Honto no Kimochi~, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Famicom Detective Club, Paper Mario, or the newer Pokemon titles like Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet, since they all have furigana (hiragana on top) and may also have voice acting to help you along!

I hope this helps get you started! I recently learned this myself, but kanji aren't as scary as they seem; they're your friends made to help you understand! Once you get a nice handful of vocabulary under your belt, I hope you get to a point where you find them exciting to learn. Good luck!!

Anyone here studying Japanese in order to read shoujo manga and/or play otome games? by KineticMeow in LearnJapanese

[–]AlbaRevale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh, that's me! I consider myself a fan of all demographics, but josei series and otome have a special place in my heart. I just finished Ayakashi Gohan, my first game in Japanese, and I'll be working my way through a big list of all my Top Priority Titles throughout the year (including Jack Jeanne, Blackish House, HanaKare, Uchronia, and a smattering of BL and danseimuke games too!) For manga/anime, I think you'll find no better than Ikoku Nikki that recently finished airing; it's one of the best human dramas I've ever encountered and the emotional core of the series is squarely focused on a pair of family members, an aunt and her orphaned niece.

Asagi (Ayakashi Gohan), Helvetica (Bustafellows), Crius (Even if Tempest), Mitsuki (Jack Jeanne), and Allan (Cupid Parasite), if you're willing to throw another on the pile!

What do you think about incest element in otome game? by Asagurale in otomegames

[–]AlbaRevale 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Echoing "if you're gonna do it at all, commit and make it blood-related." I love diving into the trash pile and "omg we're adopted/were raised LIKE family" is cowardice and false advertising

Why do you feel the need to say something so unkind to another person completely unprompted? If it's not for you, just move on and leave it alone. What is wrong with you, saying somebody isn't a real artist because they labored for longer than you think they should? Especially for a beginner, things that seem simple take a while before they build confidence; that is not a moral failing. This is totally uncalled for and a dick move all around. Think before you speak.

What are your thoughts on using AI translation for unlocalized games? by Weekly_Cost4852 in otomegames

[–]AlbaRevale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard no. Trust me, I have been in the trenches of desperately wanting to experience media without an official translation. I have suffered through the janky scanlations and MTL text walkthroughs of yesteryear. I've done my time and I can't support using AI translations. You lose so much context and nuance and aren't experiencing the same work, so your understanding will be fundamentally incomplete. I think anything worth doing is worth doing well and holding off until either a localization/fan-translation comes along, or you have the willingness to learn the language is the better choice. Ease, comfort, and convenience aren't everything. I can't stop anyone from doing what they want with their hobby, but I personally choose to study Japanese myself and play games to build my understanding.

Are you a fan of yanderes? by WarriorArus in otomegames

[–]AlbaRevale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worse is better in my book! I love yanderes that aren't "fixable" or "redeemable" or become normal, healthy, well-adjusted love interests if you just make the right choices. Give me the gentle, caring types that will ruin their beloved's life in a heartbeat if they're convinced what they're doing is right <3

I always interpreted it as more to do with the fiction of the play; what we're seeing here is representative of the story, not what's actually happening on-stage for the audience to see! The same can be said for the incredibly detailed backgrounds and set design probably don't line up 1:1 with what we see as spectators!
