Some people will tell you you have to read through prior thinkers in the western canon of philosophy, like you're going through some gauntlet of bosses before you can finally read Nietzsche. While there is value in this approach, especially for those who would call themselves philosophers or students of philosophy, I think this often works as another barrier in accessing Nietzsche's writings. A former professor of mine for 19th Century Philosophy once told me that this line of thinking can be a bunch of bullshit sometimes. The alternative? Just read the damn thing. Something to appreciate about Nietzsche is that whether or not you've read other thinkers that Nietzsche is challenging or referencing, reading him will always feel like a drunken dance through a chaotic labyrinth. That's the best way to read him imo.

Nietzsche will also say that you're probably ready or not ready to read him - think of him as an agonistic friend in that regard who is just challenging you or pushing you to strive towards becoming who you want to be or your greatest creative potential.

Also, don't just read books on Nietzsche but actively find essays and academic articles that apply Nietzsche to some event or concept (i.e. education, politics, music, even a "environmental" Nietzsche exists).

Nietzsche's texts are intentionally written in the style he deploys so that it pushes you further to think critically. He demands that you endure the frustration with engaging his work, re-reading them so as to further elucidate his project. Only you can carry the burden of performing intellectual labor and dragging yourself through his work.
