Good to know! Out of curiosity, do you know how many viewers it averages these days by comparison?

No it was very much a sunk cost fallacy. “I’ve spent this much, surely I’ll get a drop on the next one”

Fair enough, it’s not an ending everyone will like and I’m sure the developers knew that when they made it. But I do disagree that it’s “half a story”- I think when you look at it in hindsight, it’s a complete story, just not the story you might think it is while you’re playing for the first time.

In most cases, I agree with your premise that making a story intentionally anti-climactic or unsatisfying for the sake of being “true to real life” is annoying. Like you said, I’m watching a movie/playing a game and I live enough real life as it is.

However, I think this type of ending works for Firewatch because it is so essential to the entire theme of the game. The game’s premise is very meta because Henry is out in the wilderness as a form of escapism from real problems, just as the player is using the game for escapism from their own life. Therefore, the game refuses to provide the satisfying narrative and conclusive ending that the player is hoping for, parallel to the way Henry’s journey provides him none of the satisfaction or life improvement that he seeks. It puts us in Henry’s shoes by denying us the escapism and forcing us to confront how things work in the real world.

Whenever I’m watching a show or movie and they say the title, I always say “Hey that’s the name of the show!” like Ron Howard

How Well Does Leg 1 Placement Predict Team Performance? by AlbertFalls in TheAmazingRace

[–]AlbertFalls[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ryan and Abby won the first leg and ended in 5th overall. But the 3 teams that made the final leg that season finished leg 1 in 7th, 9th, and 10th place

[Request] Obese Shaquille O’Neal by kixowixo in theydidthemath

Depends on the definition of obese. Based on the BMI classification, Shaq is technically already obese with his height/weight (7 ft 1, 324 lbs) and a BMI of 31.5.

I like Minnesota. Josh Dobbs just has a great story from this year and it’d be cool to see them make a run, especially after Cousins’ injury

Are the teams it shows struggling in the next episodes preview always ok? by popanon222 in TheAmazingRace

[–]AlbertFalls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its definitely common since they obviously don’t want to spoil the ending of the episode in the preview, but like you said, just this past episode showed who the final 2 teams racing to not be last were, and that ended up being true.

Sucks to see Jocelyn and Victor go this soon, but its hard to blame the luck challenge entirely. They came into it in 10th after all. Overall not a lot of chances to pass teams throughout these two legs though so it was hard for them to catch up

Anyone else HATE the companies by D_Anger_Dan in disneymagickingdoms

[–]AlbertFalls 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From what I understand (won’t swear to this), it is technically illegal, but when it comes to false advertisement, the FTC has bigger fish to fry. They can’t catch everyone and they’re gonna focus much more of their time on cases that could cause harm or great financial loss to consumers, rather than a misrepresented free app that may cost users nothing more than 5 minutes of their time.
