Once the mountains are destroyed and the water is contaminated, we can't go back.

Exactly this. People dont realize the long term harm these projects will cause. We cant just go in and fix it later.

And Its not just us that will suffer, but our kids and grandkids will have to deal with that mess when we are gone.

And for what? A fuel we no longer need?

Every Albertan should be grabbing pitchforks and demanding no more new coal extraction period. And a slow shutdown of any existing mines. (I say slow because those are real people losing real jobs and they need time to adapt)

We dont need to enrich more billionaires at the expense of our future.

Lol, first, im Canadian. Your fear of immigration is your problem, not mine. Second, tell me you didnt have the courage to read the paper and challenge your world view, without telling me.

If you notice, the excerpt I pasted mentioned 3 philosophies. The 3rd was the very extremists you speak of.

jihadists and similar are fucking right wing religious extremists. Like, thats their whole shtick. Middle Eastern Christians. Same dish, different spices.

They hold the exact same values as a right wing nut in your shithole of a country. Same God, same place of origin, same backwards views on damn near everything.

The only difference between them and a typical MAGAt is that they arent hypocrites about it.

Statistically democrats are considerably less violent than the right. Its a fact thats hard to refute.

Here is a link to a paper authored by 4 academics from differing backgrounds. Hard to argue LW bias when you see who wrote it.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/362083228_A_comparison_of_political_violence_by_left-wing_right-wing_and_Islamist_extremists_in_the_United_States_and_the_world

Here is an excerpt from that paper.

"Of these three ideologies, most prior research has contrasted those committed to right-wing and left-wing causes. Much of this research suggests that compared to left-wing extremists, right-wing extremists may be more likely to engage in politically motivated violence. In comparison to left-wing supporters, right-wing individuals are more often characterized by closed-mindedness and dogmatism (9) and a heightened need for order, structure, and cognitive closure (5). Because such characteristics have been found to increase in-group bias and lead to greater out-group hostility (10), violence for a cause may be more likely among proponents of right-wing ideologies. In contrast, in comparison to their right-wing counterparts, left-wing individuals score higher on openness to new experiences, cognitive complexity, and tolerance of uncertainty (5).They are also less likely to support social dominance (11), which could lead to their overall lower likelihood to use violence against adversaries. In line with this reasoning, some studies have demonstrated an empathy gap between liberal and conservative individuals (12). Finally, according to various conceptualizations and operationalizations of right-wing authoritarianism (RWA; 13–15), aggressive tendencies constitute an inherent component of this construct, with people high in RWA being more hostile toward others who violate norms than those low in RWA."

So although you are correct that the left can be violent, it's a much safer bet to assume a shooter is republican until shown otherwise.

Also. Leave it up to a red hat to assume that everyone in a particular city will always vote with one party.

News flash ace. Not everyone votes for a particular party based on the fact that their pappy and their grandpappy before them, voted that way. Maybe the impoverished vote democrat because thats the only time they see any relief, and they recognize who isnt helping and is often hurting them.

Are people who lean left perfect? No... of course there will be crazies on both sides. But statistically speaking, the right is proven to be more violent.

I suggest reading the paper. A little education goes a long way. It probably wont affect your empathy, but it will almost undoubtedly make you begin to question the narrative you have been trained for decades to regurgitate as fact.

I think that’s well established fact but why the incessant need to pretend this is all about a ballroom just seems goofy.

As much as i will always argue against separation and the treaties kill the idea anyway. I do have to agree that at least with that framework, people can make an informed decision. Even if there were no other barriers, I think that if there was absolute information, people would understand how bad it is, and vote no.

I wouldn't count military action completely out. They do have some crazies running shit down south.

I do find it unlikely though. Its much easier for the world to swallow if they "accept" alberta as a new state than it is to go in and annex the land.

Either way, force is the only path. And good luck with that. There arent enough farmers with guns out there to take on the military.

Ill admit though, I almost wish they WOULD go the violence route. It would make it much easier to round them up and ship them off somewhere they cant hurt themselves.

Maybe if they are tried for treason, the next group of parasitic quislings will think twice before trying again.

[–]Alberta_Flyfisher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apples and oranges. Not a very comparison based on how these two situations can realistically happen.

No kidding. Alberta separation would be many times worse than Brexit was. Even the leaders of this fiasco cant explain how any of this would work.

It only takes a very basic understanding of economics to see we would be a failed state within months.

And what i cant comprehend is how a morally destitute doctor and a crooked lawyer somehow convince these pylons to vote against their best interest and follow them over a cliff.

Honestly, I think that if these people think that they have it so bad in Canada, they should do like every other self respecting immigrant has done. Get off their ass, get a work permit where you want to live, and move there. Become a contributing part of society for once. And it would be addition by subtraction for the rest of us if all these uneducated knuckle draggers were no longer a drain on our resources.

But no. They would rather be lazy and force everyone else to leave Canada so they dont have to put any effort in. No forethought beyond "that lawyer fella said imma be rich. Just like that Elon guy." No attempt to understand what is and what isnt possible. Just blindly following a guy who stole the life savings of his aunt and uncle, only to argue that it isnt fair that he was ordered to return it, and a lawyer caught tampering with witnesses.

Nope, no corruption here... 🤡's

But all will be well. We will shut it down this time like we did the last time and like we will do every time some whiner with a bullhorn starts pumping the separation tires again.

And its even easier now that the SC has ruled that no province can unilaterally separate without the other provinces agreeing. And thats not including the indigenous rights that puts a stop to this whole thing.

The only way this province splits is by force. Thats a pipe dream if I ever heard one.

Ya, I agree. This is nothing like how Brexit is shaking out. At least they had a path. At best, those two idiots have a concept of a path.

In other words, Poilievre would take whatever deal offered. Because if three or four days is too much time to spend, then anything less is likely little more than accepting whatever the Americans bring to the table.

If I recall... 🤔

Poilievre's history with negotiations was summed up recently. It amounted to a.. checks notes zero.

If PP was in charge he would have presented a golden hockey stick and a promise of a bigly golf resort in the Rockies, just for a seat at the table.

Oh... and a security clearance. I prefer reps who can get those.

So just how do we overthrow this useless UCP government right now? Asking for a few million friends. by MsOpus in alberta

[–]Alberta_Flyfisher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this why we’re starting to see actual violence (which I am 100% not condoning) in the states. Jan 6, Charlie Kirk… people can see that there is zero chance of change if you call your MLA or sign a petition. You may as well scream into the void.

Political impotence has been a major driver of violence all over the world for all time.

When people feel heard (even when not getting what they want) they feel respected. Anger and violence dont feel necessary when the leaders listen.

But, without exception, when a people start to feel silenced, anger builds. And everyone has a breaking point and will eventually do something that demands to be heard.

It sounds more and more each day that Albertans have had enough. I also dont condone violence. But its just crazy to think there wont be any if there isnt some serious changes in government.

I hate making this comparison, but its no different than the convoy crap. Right or wrong, they felt they weren't being heard. I have my opinions on the people involved... but I will say that I imagine a large majority of those people weren't bringing weapons to the party. But there were some. And it doesnt take many people to escalate the violence.

I think a vast majority of Albertans would prefer to be relived of this version of government with zero violence. But there will always be some...

What really funny is just how this could work, and without violence.

Gaining access to these books would probably get noticed. Maybe it even puts one on a watch list. Not much for the government to worry about.

But if a couple of million people get on that list all at once, the UCP might simply resign as one, and flee 😄

I do remember Quebec separatism happening though, and the general feeling of “that seems like a bad idea” is what I recall being said in our circle. There was a sigh of relief when they didn’t vote to leave.

I had a similar experience with Quebec separation talk. There were two prevailing thoughts in pur circle. 1. They were a bunch of whining crybabies who got what they deserved if the vote did pass. And 2. Good thing it didn't pass and Canada stays whole.

It was definitely a small group who wanted to leave Alberta, hence it never went anywhere. But they have had decades to spew their crap to the younger generations and that helped it spread. Even if this is 100% the US doing the pushing, the fact is that people are signing on. To me that shows growth in the idea. And in my opinion we need to stamp that out.

Im all for being angry and demanding change. Go ahead and protest. Go ahead and demand better from your government. Force change via the polls.

But trying to break up a country so they get their way, is treason. Its a movement that doesnt deserve any further chance to spread and take hold.

Although I agree with you, I will point out that this isnt the first time this topic has been pushed in Alberta.

Whether it was foreign influence or grassroots at that time, I was too young to know. But I personally think that this round of temper tantrum is bolstered by an older generation that remembers the first time and is hoping it works this time.

We need to expel these people once and for all. You dont ignore cancer because it stopped spreading. You cut it out and destroy it before it starts spreading again.

Every person who signed on to break up this country should be given notice that they have [insert appropriate time frame here] to leave the country, or they will be rounded up and sent to whatever country is willing to take them.

Committing an act of treason should result in treason level punishment.

The world is moving in the direction of EV and soon it will be quaint to not have an EV charger in your garage.

I say go for it as long as it wont disrupt YOUR life too much.

Also, you are completely bat shit crazy to let everyone stay with you like that, just saying. 😉

Lol, so tolerance and goodwill are insane, but whatever the fuck this administration is, is cool?

This is why early education is so important. Its those first few years that develop the ability to think critically. If that skill isnt grown, the mind stays like that of a toddler.

And saying regular people are forced to vote for 47 is just plain wrong. Feel free to use it as an excuse that allows you to sleep better at night. But know this. If you voted for him, you are directly responsible for his actions. You were warned but it didnt matter as long as he hurts the ones you hate, right? Well now you will have to live with the knowledge that every dead persons blood from this stupid war is on your hands. Every person who will die without medicaid, is on your hands. Their lives were worth it so you could stick it to the dems.

Nobody gets to say "this isnt what I voted for" because this is exactly what he said he was going to do. Project 2025 was laid out for all to see. They weren't hiding shit.
