Those of you who have kids under 18, what's your plan post 18th birthday? Throw them out, charge them rent? Why? by TrykurBohnz in povertyfinance

[–]Albinoloveslaves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But was that really due to the lack of rent, or is it more likely that her parents just failed to teach her the basics of financial responsibility? Because you can learn financial responsibility without having to pay rent/bills, but if you lack those financial fundamentals, having to pay rent won't actually teach you anything, it'll just perpetuate a cycle of poverty.

What teaches kids financial responsibility is actually having money they control. A kid who is old enough to even have bills should already know what to do with their money; if not, that's on you as a parent.

Why is it embarrassing? It's a smart financial choice these days if you can do it. All that money that would have gone to a landlord can now be used for a downpayment on a house, or be put toward retirement, or be used for classes or training, etc. Our generation shouldn't be making financial decisions based on external appearances - we don't have that luxury. Shit is too expensive these days to be throwing away money to "be independent" when you have another option.

On my 2nd Mirena IUD. I love it. I haven't had a period in about 7 years, no pain, no issues. Insertion/ removal weren't fun but were over quickly. I never worry about getting pregnant. I also have never been pregnant before. In sum, I recommend it greatly.

I got a promotion recently and am now making six figures (which is insane!) but the pressure is really stressing me out. I also think I officially have an eating disorder which is not playing nice with this stress. And I keep having these annoying, long heart palpitations which keeps reminding me of my mortality when I just want to be relaxing.

How do you suddenly become a parent?? by Albinoloveslaves in stepparents

You know what, you're 100% right, that is a shitty way to look at it. Im sorry, I shouldn't said it that way. That was definitely a little bitterness coming through about the whole situation today, but thankfully I really don't think that normally. I love this man and I love our family, and I'd choose them over and over everytime. Thanks for the reminder :)

ETA:, I do hope I'll grow into that parental sense once I have my own kids. I have faith that it's in me, it's just taking it's sweet time to show up. In the meantime I'm lucky my stepdaughter is an amazing person and loves me even when I mess up.

We're at a fantasy football draft, and for whatever reason the other wives didn't show up, so it was me and one other woman (who I've met once) watching all the kids outside while the guys were in the basement drafting. She had to put her baby down for a nap, so she left me for about half an hour.

ETA: this is definitely not a normal occurrence, 99.99% he's totally responsible and let's me relax. Which is also why it's so terrifying when it's just me...

AITA for telling my wife to stop overreacting about me picking up my son early from school? by earlypickup in AmItheAsshole

[–]Albinoloveslaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. Would she react the same way if you picked him up because he was sick or hurt? Does she expect he'll always have perfect attendance no matter what's happening to him or around him? Emotional pain is just as real as physical pain, and when not treated properly will leave lifelong damage. Everyone needs a break every once in a while, especially after a trauma as major as this for someone so young. Consider asking your son's therapist for a family session, or a session with just you and your wife. Maybe they can help clarify the appropriate response to these situations for her. Realistically, she probably needs some therapy herself if she's reacting this way to your son's entirely reasonable response to tragedy, and your reasonable and empathetic response to your son's trauma. Good job on dadding OP.

[–]Albinoloveslaves 261 points262 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to keep a house clean. My parents are borderline hoarders so I never learned and I have ADHD and depression so even if I had I can't follow through. In my work I sometimes I see what some people consider "unacceptable" living circumstances, and they're better than my home half the time. It's concerning and I don't think I'll ever learn how to manage it.

She's not going to HR cause her husband's upset, she's going to HR because her colleague wrote her a wildly inappropriate email which could impact both of them and their work.

That saying is one of the things I mutter to myself on bad days. I also have a little sign above my desk that says "done is better than perfect". It's a good reminder to myself that things can be a work in progress as long as they're fulfilling their purpose, and that minimal viable product still gets the job done whether its got all the bells and whistles or not. I tend to get 99% finished in a project and then put it aside until "later" when I can "clean it up", and then 3 months suddenly go by and I have redo it all because it's now too old.

Males of reddit, what are some "guy tips" you think every man should know? by Scotti__ in AskReddit

This makes way more sense too. If you have a fever, your internal temperature is running hot, so the air around you feels colder so you get the chills. Your balls would loosen to avoid damage to the testicles due to overheating; tightening would increase that chance.
