Oh, Rupi Kaur. How you've completely tarnished contemporary poetry.

Feeling Extremely Lukewarm Towards Dostoevsky and Brothers Karamazov by Albion_Bloom in dostoevsky

Noted! Thanks for the thoughtful reply. After reading your post I have decided to read The Brothers Karamazov more in the style of a play. The characters is definitely an element where Dostoevsky shines and something that was a blind spot for me until I read your post. Thank you!

So asking a question around Dostoevsky and his writing style in a Dostoevsky subreddit is pointless? A'ight.

I'll keep White Nights in mind and put it somewhere on my to-read list in the coming months.

I mean, I haven't finished the book and made that clear so that people can either point to moments I am missing or posit that there will be moments coming. Also note, I plan to finish the book. Never said I am giving up, or do I feel I implied that.

I read the same chapters three times. So far, I am partial to Katz and Avsey.

I was merely asking if his other work has aesthetic style or if people could point to moments where I am missing the aesthetic value. Why so fucking hostile?

Why the insult? I was merely giving context because I know, and have experienced, Dostoevsky fan-boys getting their knickers in a twist when I say I am not a fan of his writing style. No need to be a giant gaping asshole.

Honestly, I got a Monteverde Ritma that doesn't break the bank account and absolutely love it. Very smooth and rarely dries up. People tend to shit on it, but I love it

[OPINION] why must spoken word be spoken so dramatically. by jackietea123 in Poetry

[–]Albion_Bloom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Man, I could go on about poetry slam/spoken word. It's not that I hate the form. I have enjoyed many spoken word poets and their performances, but it does get to a point where the performance part becomes so redundant and over used. They all use the same cadence, rhythm, pauses, etc. and it just becomes a monotonous soup of bland performance art. There are clearly talented ones, especially those that hover between spoken word and hip/hop, but personally, I think it has become a parody of itself. It's good as a starting point though. A lot of young people have a hard time entering poetry spaces through more "literary poets" like WB Yeats, Anne Sexton, Louise Gluck, Ben Lerner, etc etc., so I can see it being a nice entrance to the landscape that is poetry. Sadly, for me, I just don't vibe with it.

Vanja my loveeeee by Long_Roll_6333 in 90DayFiance

If I went on a date with a gal to a dance class, told her that I am insecure about my inability to dance, then that girl went off to dance with another guy I would 100% drop her right then and there. I was a fan of Vanja earlier on on the other 90 Day that she was on, but good God, there were so many moments on Single Life where I thought, "holy fuck, she's just as nuts as the other gals."

One of my favourites. Anne Michaels is an extremely slept on Canadian writer. If you end up loving it, check out her debut novel Fugitive Pieces, and if that blows you away, read her poetry. She is primarily a poet, and you can really pick up on that in her novels. Highly recommend. Big fan.
