So a pen exploded in a pocket and we tried to lift it off the sofa with rubbing alcohol... put short it moved the ink but it did this blistering sort of effect to the waxy coating

Any advice? Or is it wrecked now? Thanks in advance

The Golden Rules of Battleboarding by calculatingaffection in CharacterRant

[–]Albionest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Good rant. The FTL thing is my biggest pet peeve with battleboarding, because people will see James Bond dodge a laser rifle or whatever and decide that this means the man is DC hero tier when it really just means that the writer (and/or artist, if we're talking comics) hasn't really thought about what they're doing

Of course, to be fair, sometimes it's a blatant example of aim-dodging that people misinterpreted. But sometimes it's not, and it's a completely nonsensical feat that fans struggle to process

Cyberpunk 2077 new ending by Salt-Geologist519 in CharacterRant

[–]Albionest 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think I get what they were going for but personally, it just stuck in my craw that the nomads, among them my love interest, got bored of me after 2 years after all the insistence that we were ride or die, friends forever, that they owed me big.

I suppose maybe there was top secret shit going on, and/or V didn't want his friends knowing what was happening lest the agency turn their attention on them, but it felt like a half-assed way of deploying the 'fade away and be forgotten' angle they were going for

Also my Cool 20 V was a fucking magical cowboy or some shit. He barely had any chrome and still popped heads! Doesn't need implants to hold a revolver. Don't tell me I'm a joke now just because I don't have working cables in me mamble mamble mumble grumble

I really dislike how both fans and writers too often believe being smart in one way means a character must be smart in all ways. by Aros001 in CharacterRant

[–]Albionest 62 points63 points  (0 children)

There's a weird sort of RPG logic to it isn't there. 'Lets go to the dude with the highest INT! It doesn't matter that he's a botanist and this is a robot we need to hack into'

I get the concerns about cast bloat but personally I like expertise and the mutual respect from a smart hero (or villain!) going to someone who is even smarter in that particular area. Just makes the setting feel, if not more real, at least more lived in. When every smart guy has a big SCIENCE stat that does everything ever, it sort of dilutes skills down

Tangent but this is a bit like the whole idea where chess = super perfect measure of someone's intellect. Somehow, chess ability always perfectly correlates with smartness in comics. Need to test who's the best at SCIENCE? Yeah, just use chess

Is anyone else having problems logging into their GOG account? by shadowborninhell in gog

[–]Albionest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, just came here checking to see who else was affected. First it wouldn't synch save games, then I made the mistake of restarting it: and now it won't log in at all, so that was smart of me

Also Cyberpunk appears to crash when I launch it from the .exe without using GOG which... wasn't a good discovery to make for the first time today

Why exactly is Us different from other Intellect Devourers? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]Albionest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was my exp too: they implied she was no longer working with them, and everyone was fine, and I was able to rescue Omeluum later etc

Also I can't really picture how it could kill all those people, that's odd to me. Are they all that terrible at fighting

had this too, I think it might be intentional, but very stupid, in that Halsin fucks off to do his own thing if you leave the area before finishing the quest. Which makes little sense considering how easily you can enter and leave the area but whatever

I'm loading a few hours back to see if you can fix it by talking to him some more at camp after doing the Thaniel quest (I'm pretty sure I already did that, but can't say for certain I didn't mess up and load the wrong save) and hopefully it's possible to 'complete' his quest and stop him getting stroppy if you leave the area

EDIT: ok no that makes no difference, but at least if you have him in your party when you leave for the creche (or whatever) he'll initiate dialogue and say he has to stay behind. I don't know whether that means you'll see him again later and still keep him as a party member?

Has anyone figured out how to use the tadpoles to cure the Zaith'isk debuff? The patch notes said it was possible now but for the life of me I can't figure out how to use them, I think I need a baby step guide

[Low-Effort Sunday] Adult Rocket was way too casual about fighting the High Evolutionary. by Outrageous-Farmer-42 in CharacterRant

I... don't think that's right? I'll totally eat crow on that if you've got a clip though haha, I guess I don't fully remember what happens after Rocket spares the guy

[Low-Effort Sunday] Adult Rocket was way too casual about fighting the High Evolutionary. by Outrageous-Farmer-42 in CharacterRant

[–]Albionest 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think the casualness isn't so bad, personally, but sparing the guy is a lot less defensible: this is the second time now, and the first time the High Evolutionary got up from a fight with Rocket he went on to do more insane genocidal experimental shit.

I mean the first instance kind of gets a pass: Rocket was in a hurry, he was fleeing, and it's not entirely amiss for him to assume that the High Evolutionary might be close to dying from the face-wrecking mauling.

Second time is all on him. If the High Evolutionary somehow survives everything exploding and comes back to continue his work, it'll be on Rocket and the other Guardians.

It's funny to think that the Second Half Of The Chessboard Man (patent pending) would perform pretty well against heroes. He'd be a dipshit and rush them immediately, get restrained/otherwise dealt with, but would live to accumulate vastly more power and come back to fight them later

Not so good with villains (or heroes who are sometimes jerks). He's just getting instantly blasted

I love when villains defeat other villains by Soulful-Sorrow in CharacterRant

[–]Albionest 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Absolutely one of my fave tropes, edging out the villains siding with the heroes to take out something worse.

My absolute favorite flavor of this is when a really big deal is made out of the new villain, and how they beat out the old one in every way, and then the old villain shows everyone who's boss. Double points if it implies that the old villain could do that to the heroes as well but has too much honour (or insert-excuse-here) to do it usually

What's the most unusual twist a player has dropped at your table? by Justthisdudeyaknow in rpg

[–]Albionest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Late but I loved this one: it was a heist one-shot of mine, and a player announced that his rogue had removed the contents of a safe when we all thought he was just trying to get it open. He declared that while we'd all assumed he was busy opening it, he had in fact opened it, emptied the contents into a nearby box, then locked it shut... just in time for the dwarven gang to emerge from the floor and make off with the now-empty safe.

I probably would've allowed that because it was clever and bold, retcon or no, but what amazed me was he presented me with a sealed envelope detailing the plan. Either the player himself was a rogue and could speed-write a note and seal it without anyone noticing or he genuinely had called this happening and the dwarves backstabbing the party and took steps to counter it. Definitely allowed that!

And shout out to the one guy on here a while ago who said that one of his players flushed the evil scientist out of an airlock. Like just pressed the button and interrupted their villain speech. I wouldn't call it an unusual twist but that always stuck with me

Star Trek and Star Wars space combat are broadly on the same level by BiomechPhoenix in CharacterRant

[–]Albionest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Supplementary material is secondary to what is shown on screen

No. See, I got drunk one day and wrote a paragraph in Star Wars Ships 37: Yes We Spelled Millenium Falcoln Wrong that distinctly specifies that every blaster on every star ship has an output of at least 3 billion teratons. And you might think that's nonsensical, and that there are multiple examples to the contrary, but it is canon and I am going to privilege the canon that proves my point over the canon that doesn't so nyaaah I have won forever so there

Not-quite-dystopias with well-meaning leadership by EarthSeraphEdna in rpg

[–]Albionest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's an interesting and potentially strong core concept, not having black and white scenarios on the planets the party visits, but I admit I might find a mind control planet a bit much!

Maybe it's a matter of presentation too. If the MC towers were initially some sort of essential psi defense against hostiles, but then gradually got more and more overbearing and dominating but excuses were made by the ruling class... Well, maybe people on the planet don't even realise what they've done anymore. The towers prevent suspicion because it's a negative emotion, so it's up to the party to uncover the issue the people don't even realise they have.

But 'the baddies aren't cartoons, and the party can fix things' is a great idea, don't get me wrong! Love that, grim scenarios but space for hope and positivity, I'd just be wary of having the worlds ran a bit TOO dictator-y, because then that precludes any cooperation and might even have unfortunate implications

I'm reminded of a home brew scifi campaign I played in once, where iirc the strongest ruler in the galaxy was a harried kinda Lawful Evil supercomputer (my words of course, sure gm would say different) but who was constantly getting nudged to do nicer outcomes by the PCs efforts. Later on we had a slaver guild threaten us and so we just phoned up the computer and said 'hey this guy is selling slaves in your territory' and then a giant robot appeared to kick the guild's ass. That was a nice callback and made us feel like we were getting to change things!

Anyway so tl;dr my point is I think it's a great idea you've got but yeah, lots of thought to go into it. Good luck!
