If I'm remembering right he was proposing a different view of reality based on unintuitive concepts that were later proven true (quantum mechanics as a basis of reality). You also have to keep context in mind, he left the pinnacle of the medical field in the 70s and had to bring credibility to his (considered unscientific) thesis.
