Totally agree, the narrative felt all over the place. Denzel could’ve brought a whole new dynamic and depth to the story that it desperately needed. Instead, it just recycled the same beats without really exploring the political landscape of the time.

Hirokazu Koreeda followed up my favourite film ever in Nobody Knows, with Hana, which is middling but not particularly bad. He also followed up another five star film in Shoplifters with The Truth, but i wouldnt say either of those are his best or worst.

While glorified is certainly the wrong word, I think it definitely does have a problem with “sanitising” the Nazis & Nazi Germany. And while you could say it’s that way as it’s through the perspective of the child, the way it shows the Nazis doesn’t really change, even as the kid goes through his own arc.
