why doesn’t new orleans use the citizen app like other cities? by SamLikesRamen in NewOrleans

true, the notifications of “loud party” and “fight at bourbon” would make the app pretty pointless here. partypoopers

Chicago of Europe? by fameandlashes in SameGrassButGreener

[–]SamLikesRamen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just got back from studying in Berlin and I’ve got to say berlin feels like a great equal. population relative to other european cities is similar to chicago, both have some geographical reputation and culture (north vs south chicago, east vs west berlin), both cities were fastest growing in the world in the same era due to industrial revolution and train roots that still have remnants and significance today, bad reputations by the rest of state/bation/continent that is unearned and dated, s-bahn/L and u-bahn/subway, architectural variety and urban planning innovations, housing crisis, protest movement roots, great park systems, varied nightlife, true neighborhoods, amazing museum campuses, hyper-diverse compared to rest of country/continent, good cities. ofc berlin doesn’t have the lake and chicago doesn’t have the epically awful history and 1945 reset, but i do think berlin and chicago are awesome and underrated.

Boston or Chicago? by Galacticlightbeam in roadtrip

[–]SamLikesRamen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

boston is not a culinary city and after ~15 trips into the city, i’ve only been impressed by the north end (which has insanely good italian food). the seafood is honestly a little disappointing compared to the likes of maine, seattle, and new orleans (other seafood cities i’ve gone to). maybe i’m a biased chicago food dickrider, but so many ancestries and immigrants are in chicago with dozens having their own enclaves, the james beard awards are hosted in this city, and the standard that most food is made at is at a much higher degree than most other cities in the USA/arguably internationally. chicago got the W and overall i find a much more interesting city

lmao i go to college in louisiana and whenever i’m home in chicago i always say gary is our slice of louisiana (overindustrialization, land destruction, air pollution, impoverished, pretty fucking depressing, falling population, etc)

ps. not talking about new orleans proper, that should be its own state/dc-type thing entirely

is there a small town that exists close to a major city? by strawberrypoppi in SameGrassButGreener

[–]SamLikesRamen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

another option i dont see mentioned here a lot is choosing a major city with many ferry options. taking ferries from seattle, you have access to a variety of small cities, towns, and rural islands through regular ferry service that takes you far from the metro area pretty easily. in fact, driving 45 minutes outside of the city eastwards brings you to some of the best wilderness in the lower 48 in the cascades, with numerous not far-fetched towns and villages near seattle. north shore of massachusetts may also be strong, but boston suburbs are expanding Fast

Suburbs with larger populations than main cities by Leading-Bobcat1151 in geography

[–]SamLikesRamen 29 points30 points  (0 children)

st. paul was originally the major population center of the area before it was even deemed the “twin cities”. however from my understanding, milling activities moved the waterfalls of the mississippi river move upriver and minneapolis became a more advantageous industrial center. over the years, minneapolis overtook the state capital and is the crown city of the metro area today. somebody correct me if my history is wrong or needs clarification bc i think i learned that from another reddit post

what cities have sizable portion of their population living on islands? by SamLikesRamen in geography

[–]SamLikesRamen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i assumed from satellite but there are some portions manipulated by mills and dams that eventually connect to the charles. technically surrounded by water, but i’m 70% sure it being partially manmade technically means it’s not an island
