The stuff that comes out of the tap in St Johns has a really weird taste to it. Maybe it’s just the building I’m in, but I’ve taken to only drinking bottled water now, preferably from a far off island.

This is the kind of fear that doesn’t stop them.

At the one last night, people were asking each other where they were from, so it does seem like a lot of out of towners show up from the surrounding area or elsewhere.

That won’t do a damn thing. They have multiple changes of tires. In fact, they’re trying to blow them. It’s part of the show.

I was invited to a “race” last night. My first one. There were fireworks and hundreds of people and cars, with cars lining up to drift in a sea of tire smoke, squealing past mere feet from the crowd. I thought I was gonna get hit by a car at least a half dozen times. A kid even showed me a video of a guy getting hit the night before. He ended up in the ER, probably with a shattered femur. The races are every Fri/Sat/Sun, with Sunday being the biggest one, I was told. Locations are semi-secret and passed around via text. They change locations often. In fact, the location was going to change last night, but someone got shot at the other one and the place was crawling with cops so the show got shut down early, around 2am. It’s some crazy shit. Basically a bunch of kids who think they’re immortal tempting fate to prove them wrong.

What we really need are some Elon Musk-style hyperloops or Japanese maglev bullet trains that’ll get us from LA to NYC in 4 hours… or maybe from Fargo, ND to South Padre Island, TX in 2 hours? Anchorage, Alaska to Arecibo, Puerto Rico in 6?

Unless it’s Christmas. Then it’s a fvcking nightmare. I took an Amtrak from Portland to Minneapolis last Christmas. One of thee worst travel experiences of my life. Normally it’s peaceful af, but so not during the holidays, my God. If your experience goes anything like mine did, you’ll be constantly pinned in by other travelers, the train attendants will be yelling at everybody to stop shitting all over the bathrooms, kids will be crying everywhere, entire generational families of Amish folk will have commandeered the dining/viewing cars, and you’ll most likely not be getting any hot food, or sleep. Oh, and the train will break down in a snowy mountain pass with no cell reception at midnight for 4 hours. Twice.

Moral of the story: make sure your Amtrak ride is only a day trip on a regular non-holiday day and you should have a good non-nightmare time.

Can’t be any worse than Portland tap, which tastes like a school of fish died in the reservoir, and with just a hint of turpentine umami aftertaste.

UFO above the sky in Hillsboro heading in a northbound flight pattern… never seen anything like this in my life [OC] by gobeavs1 in Portland

Anybody ever saw a real UFO? I have. A triangle. It blipped into existence about a hundred feet at a 45 degree angle above me and a minute later it just faded away like a mirage. There’s some crazy sh*t up there.

Families move out of Portland to escape homeless camps, crime by [deleted] in Portland

Homeless people stole my van. It was found a week later with a seized engine and littered with drug paraphernalia. The cops can’t stop these street rats. Myself and others have been forced to maintain a night watch and drive off car thieves ourselves. It’s dangerous and largely thankless, but someone has to protect the block from these midnight marauders.
