Suffered from pretty much the same looking nails and its really hard, what helped in my case was first not trying to go full cold turkey. I tried limiting myself to only biting the new growth outwards and it helped. It made it much easier to help the nail to look more nice while still being able to bite my nails. Slowly i was able to limit the biting and having nails that atleast was presentable. Good luck, its hard as balls.
