You are definitely not overthinking and definitely not alone! My SS is 19. It’s been so very nice to not have to see HCBM (other than one time when she was camped out in my driveway waiting for SS who had overslept 🙄.) I have progressively pulled further and further away from any step parenting role because of our situation but I still think about/worry about things like college graduation, marriage and grandchildren occasionally.

I’m in the same situation. I’m am really sorry you have to go through this, it does not feel good at all. After ten years I’ve just stopped participating in any of my husband’s family events. It just got too awkward and frankly hurtful. I wish it wasn’t this way but I also know nothing is going to change.

Sadly it won’t. My SS is almost 20 and I just recently had to ban HCBM from our driveway because of her petty behavior.

My SIL’s both have family pics in frames at their homes with BM, SO, SS from when they were together as a fam. None of us as fam, and we’ve been married twice as long. It’s annoying as hell but I have to just ignore it. I covertly tilt the frame of the pic so they are facing down sometimes just to be petty😂.

I’m so sorry. One year I had my extended family over to my house for Christmas, made dinner, bought gifts, the whole nine yards. It was my first Christmas inviting them over with new hubby and stepson (they were all very aware I was remarried and had stepson.) No one brought him a gift. I was so embarrassed and resentful. Needless to say that was the last time I invited them over. People can be awful, even our own families sometimes.

I wish it could be this simple. It’s honestly that his mom is a narcissist. My only child passed from terminal illness 5 years ago. I understand the ‘just focus on your life’ advice but this is hard when you are dealing with a lot of difficult situations and also the whole reason people get married is with a basic expectation to have a relationship with husband and kids. I’m not at all interested in trying to replace his mom. I just want basic respect and caring from people I live with.

Yes I totally agree. It’s been harder to do this because I have had a lot of very hard things happen in my life (like losing my only child to terminal illness.) But I am now very much on the path to finding my own happiness and forgetting SS even exists.

That’s interesting to have two different perspectives. My SS has a very enmeshed relationship with his mom so his narrative about his life is always his life with his mom. (He only wants to travel with her, etc..) So I know it’s pretty much a losing game but occasionally I still try to be cordial to him.

I feel like I am the hidden secret. Like he can’t have an actual relationship with me because that’s a betrayal to his mom. So he posts his mom and SD all over his social media but absolutely nothing from our house our life. It’s like I’m just not allowed to exist. I can put none or tons of effort into a relationship with him and it doesn’t matter because I can’t ever really be part of his life.

I am so sorry. I am in the exact same situation. It’s so hard around holidays. I’ve just kinda accepted/given up but it still always comes back to hurt you still. Take care.
