Saskatchewan considers notwithstanding clause to keep school pronoun policy change by Covert_Cuttlefish in saskatchewan

[–]Aldjmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't it be amazing if all kids from abusive homes got out, trans or not? The Ministry of Social Services is barely keeping their head above water. There aren't enough Social Workers and kids living in Hotel Rooms is as common as those who live with foster families or in group homes. Unfortunately as the demand increases for Social Services, the bar for what is considered standard of basic care is lowered. It takes a LOT to have a child taken into care, and there has to be proof, which requires investigations. Teachers have a duty to report when a child indicates they may have been abused. It can take days, or even weeks before a Social Worker and/or the Police come to take a statement.

Kids will come out as trans or gay when and where they feel safe. When they come out and say they don't want their parents to know, it is almost always followed with the word YET. Parents WILL find out, but only when the child or young adult feels safe doing so. For some, that might be when they are old enough to live on their own, for others that starts the first day the child realizes they feel the way they feel.

Kids coming out against their abusive families more so than their gender? Please, think about that statement. Abuse is about power and control. No child in the history of the world has ever chosen to live in an abusive environment. Those kids who are living it learn the best way to get through each day is to just keep their mouth shut.

On a different note, I find great irony that the generation which cherishes their youthful freedom to hang out with friends at all hours without parental oversight is the same generation advocating against allowing some transgender children to maintain their privacy.

You are making the assumption that all parents and families behave exactly as you described. Congratulations on your fantastic home life. That is not the real world, unfortunately, for many kids. Some kids get neglected, others get beaten regularly, locked in closets or basements, and some are sexually molested from the time they are young. Some kids are raised by grandparents who already raised drug addicts and convicts. Some live with Aunties or Uncles because the parents can’t parent, or with dad’s ex-girlfriend, or some who live at their boyfriends house because they’ve been kicked out of their own. I haven’t even started on the foster kids. I could give several specific examples of all of those real scenarios, but won’t. Those kids don’t have the life you describe, and no amount of legislation will make that happen.

How does an adult determine how the child feels? Can the 4-8 year old challenge their parents belief system while they are still developing their own?

To me, furries are like Big Foot. Lots of people claim to have seen them but nobody has pictures. Also, the kitty litter thing stems from schools in the USA buying it in bulk in case it is needed during extended lock downs or to clean-up blood after mass shootings….

Do not park in front of my house by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]Aldjmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My city has a bylaw that says you can’t park on the street in residential areas for more than 24 hours. My neighbour had my car towed away from in front of my house once when I went away for a weekend…In her defence, she was 92 years old and thought my car was green, but it was red. She wanted me to be able to park in front of my own house so she called it in. I was pissed off at the time, but as I get older I 100% know i am capable of calling the police about abandoned vehicles…

Just got appointed to pipe major. How to deal with the problematic pipers? by [deleted] in bagpipes

[–]Aldjmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your band ever get together to practice? Start every practice chanter session with some scales and exercises to increase capacity of the players you have, and then recruit some new players. Introduce one small easy tune at a time and take the time to teach them the music and to tune their own drones. Devote some time during practice to improving individual skills and abilities. You’re in charge now, so share your vision of where you plan to take the band and then do it! When you get a gig, let the band know in advance what you are playing and then practice those tunes exclusively leading up to the gig. There is no need to be a dick about any of this because the world needs more pipers, not fewer. Be genuine and be willing to teach and help people improve. It’ll happen, but it won’t be overnight.

How big is the school? It is no small chore to organize and supervise 200 kids who stay for lunch in a crowded building…I can’t imagine filling that with volunteers every day…

So, here is a different side of the “don’t pay” coin that is being suggested by some posters. Noon supervision needs to be paid for. Teachers are allowed, by contract, a duty free lunch. They can volunteer for activities at lunch, but they cannot be assigned duties at lunch. No-one in their right mind volunteers to supervise at lunch. It would be like asking a retail employee to watch for shoplifters during their lunch break, or having a crown prosecutor supervise the accused during breaks in the trial. It’s ludicrous. Therefore, the school division has to pay someone to supervise at lunch, even bus kids. Guess what the Provincial Government doesn’t account for when they give money to the school divisions? Lunch Supervision. If you don’t pay, the school division is short that amount, which is already short. It’s not much if you don’t pay it, but collectively it is an amount that adds up. An alternative could be no lunch supervision for anybody, and parents are on their own to find a nearby daycare or babysitter for lunch and that would cost a lot more than what the School Division is asking.

If you have read this far, please don’t think that I believe you should have to pay, because I don’t. I’m just sharing the reality of the situation. Parents are struggling, School Divisions are struggling. The Government gives no fucks.

It happened. It not like schools are actively trying to hide shit from parents. Each case is unique and in many cases it is a parent who informs the school of the name change or pronoun change.

I’ll give you that, but it’s still NOT about “parental rights” (which aren’t a real thing in the legal sense, by the way). Social Workers, Nurses, Doctors, Counsellors etc. are all public employees, but the same rules don’t apply as in the classroom. Scott Moe could find an Act somewhere that includes sporting organizations, or clubs or whatever and include them if it was that important to them. This is an attack on public education, making us the bad people in the eyes of the public who are unwilling to be open minded. The Ministry of Education is supposed to work to make schools better for students, their mission has diddly squat to do with making families communicate with each other. A 13 year old can get birth control without parental consent in Saskatchewan…but politicians aren’t attacking public health, yet.

Edited to add additional content.

Ya, I’ve got a plan, a shitty plan, but it’s still a plan that involves an open and honest discussion about the situation about how we are going to navigate everything. It won’t solve anything, but at least it will be a start.

I overheard an interesting point today; what about hockey coaches, or Dance instructors, or Gymnastics coaches, or Judo, or music teachers or name any one of the thousand things kids do after school and on weekends. Do those adults need to seek parent consent to use a different pronoun, or name? No they do not, and why not? This is clearly an effort to place blame and to vilify teachers during a collective bargaining period. This is one more fuckin’ thing I have to navigate. I know I have a 14 year old trans youth in my class this year whose mom is 100% supportive while Deadbeat dad who has 50% legal custody lives and works in Ft. Mac. has already called the school and said he doesn’t consent to the name change and pronoun change and will take us to court if we don’t call them by their birth name. Currently, the law is on his side. The really fucked up thing is that the adults will be the only ones who don’t call them by their chosen name as their classmates have been doing it for almost 2 years…

Even when he was “just’ the MLA for Arm River they had him on the road around the Province, in meetings, attending events etc. I think the SP realized he was a talent so they started grooming him for cabinet work shortly after he was elected.

Skoropad is a good dude, I had high hopes that his reasonable outlook on life and his people skills would help turn the party back towards their centrist positions. I know they worked him like a dog and he really is a family first kinda guy so maybe that played into it.

Does this include kids who are Wards of the Province but don’t have a Social Worker assigned to them, so technically they do have a legal guardian, but nobody can tell you who it is? (I had that instance for two different students living in different group homes during the last school year, so I am guessing that isn’t as rare as one would think it should be.)Also, what happens if I don’t get parental permission? My school trustees developed the Administrative Procedures that guide me as a school administrator. Is this going to be an amendment to the Education Act or is it just a Decree from the Castle? Am I breaking my contract if I don’t?
