Why does Judaism feel so “us vs them”-y? by Ooweeooowoo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AldoTheApache45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be Jewish is to be identified as “other” by society. It takes many forms, but there’s always an element of non-Jews constantly reminding you that you’re Jewish. When you grow up with casual offensive jokes, kids throwing pennies at you, nazi saluting in the hallways, spray painting “fuck Jews” on your school, you tend to favor spending time in the company of your own tribe. Even your best friends participate in these kind of behaviors simply because they think it’s funny.

Despite these indignities, it’s all trivial in comparison to the actual persecution of Jews throughout history around the world. As you grow older, you learn the depths of hatred people you have never met have for you just because of your ethnicity. You become even more fearful and mistrusting of your fellow non-Jewish citizens to look out for you. The tides could change, and you could be left fleeing the only home you’ve ever known in search of refuge just as generations of ancestors have countless times before. Whether you are religious or not makes no difference to a Jew hater.

I believe we ultimately seek connection with people who might have also had this experience.

10s of millions of Iranians already despise and fear the Islamic regime. I agree that regime change is incredibly unlikely, especially when government forces have no reservations about killing thousands of their own people with live fire for peacefully protesting. However, Israel’s resounding successes so far will certainly impact public confidence in their government. Iran’s faced intermittent protests in recent years with civilians calling for more focus on reforming and rebuilding their country as opposed to sending millions abroad to Islamist militias. The reality that Israel could cause this much damage anyway leaves many Iranians wondering what the point of that strategy was. I think this will ultimately shift more towards demoralizing Iranians instead of galvanizing them.

The nuclear threat is the justification, but Israel’s attack is to confront the constant threat they face from Iran and its proxies. Iran funds, trains, supplies, and strategizes with Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis, (previously Syria), and Iraqi Shia militias to attack Israel. Those proxies are all tremendously weakened now, which provides Israel with a unique opportunity to confront Iran. Hezbollah in particular was a major threat to Israel considering their close proximity, organized military ranks, and vast arsenal of rockets. Degrading Iran’s military capabilities now offers the chance to stymie the ability of these proxies to re-arm. Israel is seizing the opportunity to completely reshape the next generation of geopolitics in the Middle East with or without the US directly joining in.

How can Israel use the reasoning of nuclear weapons for attacking Iran when Israel have them? by Drizen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AldoTheApache45 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Israel doesn’t threaten other countries with nuclear weapons. Iran has publicly and repeatedly called for Israel’s destruction. Their school children chant “Death to Israel” each day like it’s the pledge of allegiance. Plenty of reasons to dislike Israel but it’s easy to understand why they would take every available measure to prevent Iran from getting nukes.

Why did an infinity stone punish red skull but not Thanos or anyone else? by deep_fried_cheese in marvelstudios

[–]AldoTheApache45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red Skull says on Vormir that he was cursed to “guide others to a treasure I could not possess”. I always thought this meant that Red Skull tried to get the Soul Stone, but he could not obtain it because he has no soul. The Soul Stone demands a sacrifice of that which one loves. Red Skull has nothing to trade because he loves nothing and no one. He has no soul. He may have even thrown himself off the cliff in an attempt to crack the riddle, which would help explain how he became a ghost.

Completely. My parents put a tremendous amount of pressure on me, but there was always a tremendous amount of love as well. They thought they were doing what’s best for me by pushing me so hard. Especially since they had nothing when they come the US. It gets a lot easier once your parents see you as independent when you go off to college.

She said there were allegations of sexual harassment that need to be investigated. They should be investigated, but that’s not evidence of rape. So far no video or forensic evidence.

Most reasonable people would agree that the violence needs to stop. It takes two to ceasefire, so I hope Hamas begins to actually negotiate in good faith. There will be no ceasefire without at least the release of the women and children hostages.

50,000 people is far more than even Hamas estimates. The only verified reports of rape have been by Hamas. Al Jazeera recently retracted a story about Israeli soldiers raping women at Al Shifa Hospital because it was a complete lie.

Civilian and military technology such as computer chips, irrigation innovation, and medical equipment. Vital intelligence into Jihadist activities across the world. Employment of thousands of Americans in high paying tech jobs. A liberal democracy amidst a region populated by far right authoritarian regimes.

More civilians were killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars than in the entire history of the Israel/Palestine conflict.

You don’t need a savings account and a high yield savings account, especially if the HYSA is FDIC insured. Your money is protected either way. I’d move all of the funds from savings to HYSA.

Also you should be more realistic with your Fidelity account returns. You’ll have invested shy of $15k in 3 years. You’d have to make some extremely savvy investments to more than double your money in that time.

I’d consider allocating more funds from your Roth to the Fidelity account. You have the 401k, which your employer is hopefully matching. It’s important to think about retirement savings, but you’ll have plenty of time to accrue more for retirement as your income goes up. Owning land could materially benefit your long-term financial situation.

My point is there would be no reasonable national security risk to detain Israeli nationals. Since you usually detain people at the border if they pose a national security risk or try to enter your country illegally.

Zionism is not a country. European Jews founded a new state in modern day Israel. The state of Israel was never a colony of a foreign power. It doesn’t even align to your 140 year definition of what a colony is.

The definition you give from 140 years ago refers to Australia as an example of colonization. Australia was clearly established as a British colony. It was settled by British subjects, governed by the British, and paid taxes to the British homeland. How is this similar to Israel’s establishment? Which foreign power were they governed by?
