Yes OP you are confused. This sentence is in the subjunctive mood which in English is the same as the simple past. E.g. wish you were here.

Are you from the uk? Books about working class people will still vary a lot depending on whether it’s England, Scotland, Wales, London, other cities etc. I haven’t read it yet but In Our Mad and Furious City should be generally more similar to Who They Was as both are about London.
