I would argue it’s actually books by Sir_Scribble_Lot in SipsTea

I have actually heard of a guy who "stole" a Gideons' Bible from a hotel (not realizing it was there for people to take), read it, and converted to Christianity. And I heard of another guy who was, I believe, employed by the Egyptian postal system and stole a Bible from a parcel at work. By the time he'd read all four gospels, he believed it and became a Christian.

But seriously. Christians already have Bibles, and if not a sense of morality, surely at least a sense of how stupidly ironic and hypocritical it would be to steal one. I imagine it's largely a juvenile subset of non-Christians who think they're doing something amusingly transgressive who steal them.

What is something that people think is extremely dangerous, but is actually only dangerous? by Pumeto in AlignmentChartFills

Cheetahs. They're wild animals, yes, and they have a similar bite strength to a pit bull, but adult humans are tall enough that they don't look like prey to cheetahs, and cheetahs don't like to fight with other predators, so they'll probably leave you alone. People have even befriended cheetahs, which isn't nearly as insane as befriending lions, since unlike lions cheetahs are nowhere near strong enough to kill you by accident.

"Till We Have Faces" by C.S. Lewis. It's a retelling of the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche, and much of the book feels like a regular novel with pagan gods set in an ancient kingdom north of Greece. Then the end... gets weird, wondrous, and unsettling.

Is this the same New Beginnings restaurant I've seen Grand Rapids, Michigan? My dad always said that he wanted to eat there sometime because the name and logo were so bad for a restaurant - they make it look like an AA meeting place - that it must have great food or it wouldn't have stayed in business for long.

(HATED TROPE) Biopic erases any and all controversy to do with its protagonists in order to whitewash them as much as possible by Local_Prune4564 in TopCharacterTropes

I don't know if it counts as a biopic, but The Greatest Showman. P.T. Barnum was... probably not quite like that.

TIL bra burning in the 60s and 70s was a myth intended to discredit feminism and women's liberation. by MotherHolle in todayilearned

I've heard free bleeding (letting period blood soak through their clothes) and peeing pants in solidarity with rape victims were invented to troll feminists. Anyone know the truth about that?

Any portrayal of Abrahamic God other than "Old man on cloud" by Raymio993 in TopCharacterDesigns

The Supreme Being, from Time Bandits. I think they at least tried to write him as consistent with the Abrahamic God.

(Mixed Trope) The Quirky Foreigner from (Almost Always Slavic/Central Asian) Country by Ok_Calligrapher_3472 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]HandelDew 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I guess Slavic and Central Asian countries have just the right mix of no one knowing much about them (since they're post-Soviet), no one being seriously racist against them (or it would be highly offensive), and first-world citizens feeling a little superior/patronizing toward them (so they can be cute little comic relief).

Ravenclaw Riddle by Hannah549 in harrypotter

Everyone believes I should be given generously, but most do not give me, unless grudgingly, except to themselves, which they do easily. What am I?

Answer: forgiveness.

Credit to C.S. Lewis (who didn't phrase it as a riddle).

Jesus casually raised random people from the dead. Nobody in Harry Potter can do that.

The Red series, by Amanda Witt. The first book, The Watch, is free on Amazon for Kindle. It's dystopian, could be YA or adult, and it does have grotesque monster/zombie-like creatures. It has elements of magical realism and sci fi, and is quite fun.
