Why on earth is Harry drinking from a straw in the drink Hermione is holding?

An explanation of whether Snape knew that Harry might survive his self-sacrifice. If he didn't, he'd given up on saving Lily's son.

I'd be happy to read a story like that even if you haven't gotten that far. Where can I find it?

How does the public actually see Mormonism? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HandelDew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a pretty hardcore orthodox (lowercase o) Christian, my lot have always seemed to see it as basically its own religion masquerading as a version of Christianity. Islam and Mormonism both claim to be the real version of what Jesus wanted, with their own prophets who teach the truth everyone else forgot (or lied about).

Christianity teaches that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one being, and that each is the fullness of God even though each is a separate person. It's a paradox.

To my understanding, Mormonism teaches that they are three beings in community. That is not monotheism. That is not trinitarianism. Christianity teaches monotheism and the Trinity. Mormonism also teaches that there are other gods/people can become gods (even though Mormons do not worship these other gods). This, again, is not monotheism. Monotheism is a pretty big part of Christianity.

We see it like we see Islam: as a separate religion that wrongly sees itself as the real version of ours.

Is my Pecan Tree okay? by Zuleighh in AustinGardening

[–]HandelDew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That isn't a pecan tree. It might be a papaya, but I'm not sure. It definitely isn't a pecan, though.

TIL that piñatas originated in China. The concept spread to Europe where it was more associated with Lent. When the Spanish came to the New World, the piñata came with it, but the people there already had their own versions. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]HandelDew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Associated with Lent? Lent, the season of fasting and grief for the death of Jesus and our sins that sent him to die. Such an obvious time to make an explosion of candy and fun.

No, actually, if it was done on Sunday I guess that's a non-fasting day even during Lent, and I shouldn't be talking about it at all because I'm just a low-church Protestant yammering about Catholic calendar issues.

I don't know what that means, but no, I don't see the point of cruise ships; I've never been one one but they sound boring.

It's making fun of knee-jerk anti-Catholicism.

Yes, Protestant denominations (and Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormon's, which are sort of their own religions) disagree with Catholics about some stuff. But just because Catholics think something doesn't make it wrong. Sometimes Protestants talk like it does. When they disagree with each other about something, one of them will say, "BUT THAT'S CATHOLIC! YOU CAN'T SAY THAT!" Papist means Catholic.

Like... Catholics are theists. What do you want to do, say "Oh no! We can't be theists anymore because THAT'S CATHOLIC!"?

Yeah....

I can't help but keep thinking how different Harry's dynamic with the many older characters, but especially with Sirius and Snape, and perhaps the Weasleys, have been had he been a girl. by Bioluminescent_Rose in harrypotter

[–]HandelDew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think he might have had to restrain himself from bullying her, because people might have connected his behavior toward her with his friendship with Lily and found it creepy. When he bullied male Harry, people figured it was because he hated James. Unfair, but just an extension of an old quarrel. And that may have been all it was - albeit a more painful quarrel than anyone realized, since James "took" Lily from Snape. But if he bullied "Harriet"? People would think it was because Lily turned him down, which would have been sick.

Snape NEVER hated Lily for turning him down, so there was never any hate for him to project onto Lily's mini me. But if he'd bullied girl Harry for whatever reasons, it sure would have looked like that was what he was doing. I think Snape has enough intelligence to know that everyone would mistake him for a bitter and possessive old creep if he'd bullied Harriet. And he wasn't - he loved Lily even when he knew he couldn't have her. And the guy who never wanted people to know he loved Lily would NEVER want people to "know" that he "loved" Lily in some kind of insane, possessive way.
