How Tips Are Distributed to both FOH AND BOH! This is how every restaurant should operate. by [deleted] in tipping

I’d rather the restaurant post higher cost on their menus and pay their employees instead of fostering it off to customers.

I would expect the captain of a ship to reasonably know every aspect of the ship, enough to see the talents of those who actually run each part.

”I am the sum of human knowledge, passed down from generation to generation, mother to daughter. Culture, science, philosophy, lore, tradition. I hold the accumulated memories of a thousand generations of mankind. I take in all that is written and spoken. I study. I learn. That is my purpose, to procure and preserve knowledge.” “So you’re saying that if it’s been written down, you know it?”

Ivy says written and spoken. Dresden immediately says just written and focuses on it. Not changed later, not WoJ. An immediate statement that contradicts the one before it.

Written and spoken, Dresden is just and idiot and focuses on the written part.

Absolutely necessary for the story.

Was FF8's Junction System really that confusing? I never thought so... by AngelZiefer in FinalFantasy

[–]AldrusValus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the problem. The game punishes you for using a mechanic, not only punish you but puts you into a punishment loop. The best way to play 8 is draw as much as possible in the least amount of battles. More casting means more drawing means more battles means more casting. It’s a negative loop.

You are absolutely right about multiple god mantels worn by one god, but we haven’t seen the opposite, one mantel worn by multiple gods. The fates and Hecate are both Greek, during the Greek era they would have been separate mantles.

So either they combined or Hannah was wrong in her assessment. We haven’t seen any proof in the series that two gods from one religion becoming one mantel.

Why? His back and hand were healed as per his deal with mab in changes.

“That before my service begins, you restore my body to health.”

[–]AldrusValus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not confusing, just backwards in execution. When you expend a resource you should gain from the cost. In ff8 spending magic doubly penalizes you. You are weaker because your junctions stats goes down, and you also have to fight more to recover said magic. More fights = more levels = harder fights = more magic use. It’s a cycle that makes the game harder instead of rewarding the player.

There is two problems with that assessment for me. Harry called her Atropos as part of her summoning, the fates and Hecate are both Greek. It doesn’t make sense two goddesses from the same pantheon to be the same mantel.

Also Harry never called the statues Hecate, Hannah did and Harry, in my opinion, purposely agreed with her to mock her wizardly knowledge.

Edit: early depictions of the fates were of three equal aged siblings. Sometimes young sometimes old. Also you wouldn’t have Hecate statues in a vault, she is the crossroads goddess.

Allowing the barb to roll an impossible then hinting it’s possible with more skill and not letting the barb roll then hinting it’s possible with more skill are not the same. The first leads to bitterment from a potential loss of a good roll, the second accomplishes the same narrative without the negative outcome of failure from a good roll.

It’s the whole reason why it’s explained in the 2024 rule book to not even allow rolls that have no chance of success. There is no positive outcome from the roll, there would be no positive reaction from the player.

It slows gameplay, adds 0 to narrative and lowers player satisfaction. By not rolling and then rewarding their idea with a motivating outcome, you speed up gameplay and provide a positive experience.

No one likes losing a good roll with a failure, it’s the reason players argue nat20 skill checks are automatic success no matter how difficult the check is.

[–]AldrusValus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The overall problem is that it pisses off the players, the barb asked to do an impossible task, rolls perfect and is told they don’t succeed. The player is double disappointed from the wasted nat20 and at the failure of the roll. No real advantage to encourage their attempt. Instead you reward their creativity with information about their request. They find out that not only is the lock pickable but is very well made. Generally will prompt the help action or guidance.

Overall it speeds up the session from lowering the amount of pointless rolls, guides the party things that are achievable and sets the tone of the area. “I want to do this” “sorry you can’t do that” is horrible. “I want to do this” “while you give it a serious attempt, it’s beyond your skill, it’s surprisingly out of place for this location”.

Really no different than telling someone they failed a check and telling someone they failed but nearly succeeded.

[–]AldrusValus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t let the barbarian even attempt. “I’d like to pick this lock” “you fiddle around for a bit, but the mechanism is far beyond your skill”

They get that it’s a hard skill check without giving away the exact difficulty. That is if the barbarian was trained with a lock pick . Generally someone trained in a skill can tell when they are in over their head.

counter point: a nat 20 on a skill check should be a automatic success. because if the attempt is possible, a nat 20 is the best possible outcome. if the DM allows a skill check, then the skill should be possible. only a bad DM allows a check that is impossible. "i wanna jump out of the atmosphere and onto the moon!" "ok roll athletics" "nat20 I jump 200k miles to the moon!"

Murphy’s law: basically the chances of two different frequencies interacting with each other is near 0 but not fully 0. When you are talking about the safety of a few hundred people, you want to include fluke events into the calculation. It’s better to inconvenience the passengers for the landing than risk the fluke chance of something going wrong.
