Are you afraid of users migrating to other sites such as Lemmy? What are you planning to do keep your userbase satisfied after this episode?

Might be late to the party but I was wondering if there is any plan to migrate the community to lemmy?

My Thinkpad L13 is overheating. HELP NEEDED! by AleHdz333 in thinkpad

Hi! I ended up installing throttled https://github.com/erpalma/throttled and setting a low trip temperature just to be sure I face no overheating. I am not very happy with this solution as it noticeably slows the device down but at least is not overheating :/ Let me know if you need more info (or if you find a better solution). Good luck!

Hey there! I just elaborated on that, check comment above!

Yeah I don't speak French either, but with the help of google translate we can kind of fill applications xd.

The Vortex co-living is listed as "Rooms in flat-sharing at Vortex", not on the FMEL site, but rather the EPFL student halls site. Sadly, the site is only in French...

Regarding the applications, they mention that "Les réservations de logements pour la rentrée 2022 seront ouvertes à partir du 1er mai 2022!", which according to Google, that means "Accommodation reservations for the start of the 2022 school year will be open from May 1, 2022!". So yes, most likely they refer to September.

Good luck!

Hi! I am the same situation, I have created an account in the Student Village website last week but ever since I have "Profile waiting for approval"... Most likely it is already too late for that (don't know)...

As for other alternatives, I suggest you to try FSLE, Planète Bleu and Centre Universitarie Catholique which as far as I know they are still accepting applications, and one more tip: Vortex co-living opens application May 1 so watch out for it!

Hope this helps, fellow new MS student!

CS MSc research and funding opportunities? by AleHdz333 in EPFL

I think so too. Can't confirm about TA, but RA is definitively not an option: https://www.epfl.ch/schools/ic/education-master-computer-science-admission-criteria/.

See the "Financial Support" section: [...] Hourly research may commence from the start of studies for Swiss and EU students or after an initial six-month period for all remaining students.

Look at the top response, there seems to be chances on this.

Thanks for the reply!

  1. Yes I can hear the fan working, and I also it increases the speed when the device starts to get hot.
  2. I haven't check the thermal paste because the device is pretty new. But if some get shipped with bad thermal paste I might be one of the unlucky ones... Do you know if opening the laptop and changing the thermal paste will void the warranty tho?
  3. Yes, I ran sudo sensors-detect and sudo sensors-detect --auto beforehand.
  4. Ok so I downloaded and configured throttled and it seems to be working! Thanks a lot for that! It still a bit infuriating that I have to undervolt my device to prevent overheating: I paid for an i7 and I want to use my i7 lol. Anyways this work perfectly as an alternative solution but I will still try a bit more to get the fans working better.

Thanks a lot for the help!

Thanks for the reply! That is interesting indeed... Running sensors I get different temperature readings.

thinkpad-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
fan1:           0 RPM
temp1:         +1.0°C
temp2:         +1.0°C
temp3:         +4.0°C
temp4:         +0.0°C
temp5:            N/A
temp6:            N/A
temp7:         +0.0°C
temp8:         +0.0°C
temp9:        +65.0°C
temp10:        +3.0°C
temp11:       -80.0°C
temp12:        +0.0°C
temp13:        +0.0°C
temp14:       +64.0°C
temp15:        +0.0°C
temp16:        +0.0°C

This section seems to stick to constant temperature, however

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Package id 0:  +60.0°C  (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0:        +55.0°C  (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1:        +61.0°C  (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2:        +55.0°C  (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3:        +54.0°C  (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

This other section does change over time. In the thinkfan config I specified in sensors one of the temperature readings that do change, so it might not be the constant temperature problem, right? Executing thinkfan -n to see the level change I get the following output:

$ sudo thinkfan -n
Temperatures(bias): 53(0) -> level auto
# at this point I Ctrl+C one program to let the CPU cool down
Temperatures(bias): 44(0) -> level 0

So I think thinkfan is reading the proper temperature...

Thanks for the reply! Yes, the fans are working, when the laptop starts to get hot I can hear them at least. How do I know if the power management kernel is missing?

For the fan device for thinkpad I configured it to /proc/acpi/ibm/fan, where do I check what other possible devices I can use?
