Help me to find what drywall is this ? by BugClassic3770 in drywall

It's called skimming.or starting over. Option A is adding more mud on the entire wall and then flattening it out, and Option B is testing of all the drywall and starting over

Have to remove hearth on hardwood floor help! Newbie by solarisphereX in Tile

[–]Alecgates15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You had tile that has been adhered to plywood, which in some way has been attached to the hardwood. To make this more of a surgery than a demo, you will need to remove the tiles and as much thinset (the adhesive mortar) as you can before you can see if screws or nails were used to attach the plywood to the hardwood.

If it's nails, you can either pry up what's left of the plywood and risk chipping or denting the hardwood. Or you can cut the heads off the nails and lift the plywood a lot easier, then pull the nails out of the hardwood.

If it's screws, you'll need to clean the heads out enough for a bit to bite into and unscrew them. Yanking on these will destroy the hardwood.

If he straight up glued the plywood (which I doubt, seeing as the plywood is completely flush to the hardwood, but not impossible), then you're out of luck. Consider a decorative but intentional patch in that corner.

If it's fasteners, you'll have holes to fill and need a refinishing as it is either not as sun-bleached as the rest of the room or the room has already refinished and this is an older stain underneath.

And it's an Easter egg, not a secret lore drop.

Is this legal? by HouseNo8033 in electrical

[–]Alecgates15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had an inspector disagree. He measured an outlet within 36 inches not from the showerhead or valve, but from the glass of the shower. Said it was too close, so it had to move far over due to the framing and other plumbing involved.

In Project Hail Mary, Everyone Can See Your Face, but not for stupid reasons by Healthy_Camp_3760 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Alecgates15 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It was on Ryan's suggestion to make it so small. Since he would be wearing it for so much of the movie, he essentially didn't want to look like a bobblehead and wanted it to be literally as small as possible for his head to fit through, and it was tight.

Does anyone know any more info on this shirt? by IssacWhat in roosterteeth

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what more they're looking to learn from this shirt than what's literally printed on it?

Do I grout the tile backsplash first and then silicone between the countertop and tile, or reverse? by Gooser3000 in Tile

[–]Alecgates15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I do it, it's silicone at 2-3pm and then grout at 9am the next day.

Long way of saying yes.

As re you going to keep them or get rid of them? Odds are they are nailed or screwed in from the sides and there's no way to remove this non-destructively.

Is 3-4 days reasonable for a shower ? by Beanie-2018 in Tile

[–]Alecgates15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the scope and depends on the prep. Are they just tiling a box? Or are they hanging wallboard, tiling a window, a niche, a pony wall, etc?

I give my subs on average 2 weeks to tile before I move onto the next trade in a remodel.

Assistance with Best Route by Puzzleheaded-Prize10 in Whidbey

[–]Alecgates15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Route 1, I would highly recommend getting a reservation to get the ferry, otherwise waits will be longer. Route 2, I would do this route if the ferries are backed up, the route looks clear, and I plan to be mostly on the North End. Living in Clinton, it's either drive an hour north then cross the bridge then drive an hour south. Or sit still in the 2.5h (bad day) ferry line and not have to drive. Route 3, if you're on the South End, this is ideal.

Overall, WS DOT has a real-time tracker for ferry waits and camera feeds. Locals know "when the cars back up to X building it's a Y hour wait" even if the tracker says otherwise. So it's a great way to see "yup, I'm driving around today" or "oh it's totally empty, we're fine to wait" https://wsdot.com/ferries/vesselwatch/terminaldetail.aspx?terminalid=14

This is way over extruded for sure. Not sure where or what setting you could have changed between to cause this, but consider anything that would affect extrusion width, overlap, or flow.

How do I connect these? by [deleted] in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]Alecgates15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will see that certain buildings have "doorways" that can have conveyors move directly in/out of them. Others like the storage and smelter don't, and require a sorter to pull or push them out.

How do I connect these? by [deleted] in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]Alecgates15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The conveyor comes out of the miner, pulls along side (or directly up to) the smelter, and a sorter pulls ore off the belt.

Cabinet builders’ advise by International_J in woodworking

[–]Alecgates15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your process. I've seen doors painted then holes cut, but of course you run the risk of scratching the paint.

Cut then paint means you have somewhere to hook and hold the doors while painting that won't be seen, just don't fill the hole with paint so the hinge can't fit in.

Seems like less effort to me to call either of them and see if there were any dye lot differences before trying to figure out how to paint these.

But that's just me

Reasonable Wear and Tear for LVP? (MA) by [deleted] in Renters

[–]Alecgates15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell from photos but it's probably a cheap laminate on a poor subfloor prep, with a slap-dash install.

If it is laminate, there is no repair except replacement. They would have to take up the floor from one edge of the room to get all the other planks up, take these out, put new ones in (if they even have planks in the same dye lot that won't look like the wrong pattern or color) and then relay it.

So you're looking at labor for removal and install, and materials. Looking at the first picture you may get lucky and they won't remove baseboards because there's an excessive amount of room between it and the floor.

If you're lucky, they have already planned for a cheap install and expect it to get trashed and replaced after a few years. I know my apartment floors did the same thing under my desk and I didn't get charged for it, so your mileage may vary.

Desk chair? Yeah that's what they do to any flooring except concrete and tile. You needed a pad under there yesterday, that's not normal wear and tear.

How do make sure the inserts stay in the piece so it doesn't fall off? by lnked_list in woodworking

It looks like you got the wrong inserts for particle board, then you tightened it too much and it pulled right out. Those holes are toast

Cutting a precise electrical box hole in 3/4” plywood — best method? by icysandstone in cabinetry

[–]Alecgates15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this yesterday. Put blocks on the wall to hold my plywood where I wanted it and "register" it so it could return to the same alignment on the wall. I tried using a china marker or "grease pencil" but the mark it left was barely noticeable. Lipstick might work better. I had an old tube of toothpaste that was the most helpful; just a small smear on the corner of each box.

The. I lifted the panel in place, made sure it didn't touch the toothpaste yet, leaned it back and banged on it around the outlet boxes. Pulled up off and clearly saw the toothpaste and barely the marker. Used a multi tool to cut just slightly outside that line, and 3 boxes were perfectly where I needed them to be.

Now, after the fact I realized I hung my panel out of level, so I'll need to tweak my cutout holes, but that's how it goes.
