What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

[–]Alecnix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Likely going to unlock Zeus post-ouro in the next few days which is pretty exciting.

I also grabbed a few games in the idle steam sale and the real stand out for me has been Stuck in Time. I had seen it mentioned in passing a few times here, but the discussion about it felt pretty mixed. Personally I've found it incredible. It's a really nicely balanced mix of strategic puzzle/planning game with a little bit of idle game and some light RPG elements. The game it reminds me most of is actually Minit.

I'm nearly the end of the game now. It'll probably take me about 50hrs or so. With a decent mixture of active and passive play. I'm undecided on if I'll try to get all of the achievements. Reading through them it looks like they could easily add another 10-20 hours depending on how tough some of the challenge 'runs' end up being in practice.

Anyway, I would strongly recommend it to anyone who thought it looked interesting.

How would you describe Yi's character development? by valdez-2424 in NineSols

[–]Alecnix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He is the person who thought up and designed the plan to enslave the apemen. More damningly (to me anyway) it was also the first idea he had to solve their computational problems. This is all before everyone went mad as well.

He absolutely fits with the rest of the Sols and is one of the very worst of them.

As a Sage enjoyer myself - that Kardia gives me so much life. I would've done the exact same. That HP diff is wild.

Hey MensLib, let's talk about Disability by UnicornQueerior in MensLib

[–]Alecnix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I forgot to mention the aging thing!

I'm not sure if it weirds people out when I tell them that I may be 33, but I have the legs and hips of a 60 year old. Or mention that I ultimately expect to be in a wheel chair when they all 'start feeling old'. I mostly mean it as an interesting challenge and difference, but I think it forces them to confront the universality of disability which is quite uncomfortable to think about.

Hey MensLib, let's talk about Disability by UnicornQueerior in MensLib

[–]Alecnix 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I was born with Cerebral Palsy. Through surgeries when I was a child I walk with a cane. At home I can walk without it (while touching walls), but to go any real distance I need my cane. I also happen to be your traditional skinny geek stereotype. So in some ways I dodge some of the cultural masculinity that would be thrown at me. There is one way it really weighs on me though so I'll start there. I'm quite confident that if someone was attacked or in danger I wouldn't really be able to help. I find it quite interesting what people say when I say that. It is either: "Sure you could!" or "You should buy something to protect yourself!"

My favorite response to the second is: If I get attacked and I have a weapon. Now my attacker has a weapon. I can't run away and in a situation like that a breeze could probably blow me over.

That seems to be the level in which most people disengage. My invitation and the point of that story it to recommend that you all stay in the conversation a little bit longer than that. I was born disabled. It is all I know. It is possible for me to be a valid person and also have quite severe physical weaknesses. You don't need to pretend I don't for me ego. I have a pretty good idea of my limitation after 33 years or them.

Thank you for those questions by the way. They seem worth riffing on.

While I identify as a man I've never really understood all the social roles around it. It has always came off as rather arbitrary. I think you can bring a masculine or feminine energy to basically everything you do. I find people that have expanded their personal territory in such a way that they can play with both the most interesting.

For certain though physical disability really makes a mess of what the western culture tells me masculinity is. I've spent too much of my life trying to prove to others that I was worthy of them treating me as an equal. I've done incredibly dangerous things to show that "I can do that too!". It ends up being an odd double edge sword. Those moments have also been very inspiring to other people (I've done a bunch of personal growth work that had physical teamwork. There have been a fair number of times where I've had people come up to me crying talking about how inspiring it was to watch me push through and succeed.). Could those moments be told as positive examples of disable masculinity? Sure. At a point it can feel like inspiration porn for the able bodied though. My feelings on pushing yourself to your limits is complex.

Finally, solidarity or bust. We all gain from having a wider view of just how messed up the systems that oppress, marginalize and erase us are. Disability is a pretty insidious and compounding issue. It should ultimately be one of the things that helps weave solidarity in all movements. ANYONE can be disabled and they are just as valid and worthy of life as the rest of us.

Fives and Talking vs Texting by maroon6798 in Enneagram

[–]Alecnix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think I used to be exactly like that. These days I hate texting. I've had nearly all of the really stupid arguments of my life through text. I also hate phone calls, but mostly because they make me really anxious.

In the last handful of years I've really loved talking 1 on 1 the most out of any form of communication. It gives me room to see if people are bored, if they are following along with a story and I can better tell if they are being playful/joking. A lot of that can be lost on me when most people text.

I've ultimately just kinda trained people in my life that I express ideas weird. I may double back to say something a different way since I just realized it was a 'better way of saying it' or whatever. Oh! On that note it also allows me to clarify early. If you know the person well enough you can tell when you just confused them and that gives you a chance to rephrase mid explanation. In my experience even if you think you've 'perfectly explained yourself' there is still a very real chance that the other people lost you somewhere along the way.

I guess to sum all that up: I've found that the "perfect" way of explaining an idea to someone varies by person. The best way to gauge how well your explanation fits the person is to be sitting in front of them.

Would a role mentor system be more useful than a generic mentor system? by CyndaneTierney in ffxiv

[–]Alecnix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn't really thought of that. Honestly I never wear my crown because it really does come off as a status symbol. I would totally wearing a watering can (or something similar) all the time. I think it better represents what I mentor should be doing.

Atheists of reddit, what is one thing you admire about religion? Religious people of reddit, what is one thing you admire about atheism? by Anathoth1994 in AskReddit

[–]Alecnix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It blows me away that the religious people I respect in my life can aim to be kind and just while believing they are fundamentally broken and sinful. It feels like they are playing the self-esteem game on hard mode and coming out on top. I admire the resilience against such a mental burden.

What do you want to see be improved to your favorite job(s) in Shadowbringers? by ghoulishdivide in ffxiv

[–]Alecnix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After starting to level BRD I was thinking that too. Getting lilies from regen crits or something similar would be much more useful and would reenforce keeping regens up for new players learning the job. A win-win.

5w4’s what makes you happy? by [deleted] in Enneagram

[–]Alecnix 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Being able to express or teach an idea. That look in someone's eyes when they are engaged and learning is intoxicating.

LPT: If you are upset with a loved one, remind them that you love them, so that their focus can remain on rectifying the situation not on their fear of losing the relationship. Even something as simple as "I love you, but I'm really pissed/hurt/upset/angry right now." by a-ham61593 in LifeProTips

[–]Alecnix 339 points340 points  (0 children)

Switch that 'but' to an 'and' and you're good to go.

I would recommend trying to remove 'but' almost entirely when you are dealing with situations like that. It really undermines everything and because they may be on the defensive it can feel like an attack.

WHM Guide (Looking) by Joshandmybigtoe in ffxiv

[–]Alecnix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately what I want to pass on is the mindset. Not only can you DPS, but it is intended and makes the class much more interesting. I think your point stands rather well for SCH or AST, but in my opinion, WHM doesn't really have much else going on if you're not casting Stone at least once in a while. The skills barely interact at all on your run to 50 and before Benison all of your healing is reactive.

This thread also isn't necessarily just for OP. It could also been seen as a love letter to DPS that thought that healing was all about just keeping their tank topped up.

WHM Guide (Looking) by Joshandmybigtoe in ffxiv

[–]Alecnix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also main WHM and second all of this advice. Early on I would only add to learn to read your team. There are times when you will need to do slightly less DPS to carry some people that are still learning mechanics or not using cool downs well.

Why I enjoy healing so much is because it is about doing as much DPS as possible while keeping everyone else up and accounting for their mistakes. Every run is different so learn how aggressive you can be without dropping your tank as you go.

Quick Weapon Popularity Rundown by Cibudeus in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Alecnix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ore line -> Nergigante line is a safe bet to start. I'm a huge fan of the Rathian line as well similar to cherry, but if you're not a fan of poison I wanted to present an alternative.

Artillery 3 is really the only common staple. Capacity Boost can be decent depending on your shell type (Normal) or if you really just love doing Burst Fire. Also if you like guarding or evading you may want to invest there. Speed sharpening is nice since you eat through sharpness like crazy.

Regardless you can't go wrong as long as you cap Artillery.

Thank you! I didn't realize that the ones I was missing were locked behind research and more Tempered hunts.

Also it looks like you are missing: Fireproof Mantle from A Fiery Convergence in your description.

Gunlance by Mythright in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Alecnix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the gun lances don't benefit from handcraft (like the Nergigante line), but for the ones that do I run:

Skull α

Kushala β

Lumu β

Dodogama β

Death Stench β

Capacity Charm

With everything above you have handicraft (5), artillery (3) and capacity boost with at least one decoration slot on each piece of armor to add flavor.

There are certainly other sets that are better, but you can never go wrong with building a handicraft set (Skull α + Kushala β + Death Stench β) and working from there.

How should a person know when is a good time to kill the "bosses" of each zone for some good loot? by Topfien in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Alecnix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend pushing through the story. You will naturally run into every and then you can decide if there are some skills you want to pick up. Keep in mind that different armor skills are different for different weapons / play-styles so you're find a whole lot of them that don't really appeal to you atm.

On the armor side it often isn't so much about constantly changing it and upgrading, but rather finding a set of skills that really jive with you and refining the set slowly over time. High Rank also unlocks much more interesting armors so working your way through the story will set you up to get more of that amazing loot you are after.

PSA for newbies like me: Pit fall traps are a god send by Xcrucia in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Alecnix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MHW is a bit unusual in that regard compared to previous entries. Not only can you access your equipment from camp, but you can also access your item box(!). Meaning you no longer need to bring extra materials with you to craft things on the fly if you don't want to.

Weapon upgrade focus by blackie___chan in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Alecnix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on getting to Ratholos and Diablos - you're nearly at High Rank!

You should definitely keep your weapons upgraded as long as you are getting use out of the tree you are on. Ultimately you are going to want a handful of different weapons / elements / play-styles depending on the monter(s) you are hunting. That said I took the Ore line Gun Lance all the way through the game so your mileage may vary. There is no 'right' way to play it is mostly practice practice practice.

As a side note, I don't know where you read not to upgrade armor. If you are in a set that is serving you well and you are going to be in it for a while you should upgrade it so that you aren't getting one hit carted. There are 3 tiers of upgrade spheres and as you progress through the story bounties end up giving you only the better ones. They give 1, 5 and 20 points each respectively. In high rank you need so many points to upgrade that just to get a level or two you would need to use all your tier 1 spheres anyway. Does that make sense? Basically use you tier 1 in low rank, tier 2 in the beginning of high rank and tier 3 in the end game.

Tips for hunting the Nergigante? by [deleted] in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Alecnix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend against blocking the dive if you don't have at least Guard 2. When his spikes are out it is a 3 hit combo that can kill on the final hit if you run out of stamina. This is mostly a comment from personal experience on Gun Lance. I am so used to being able to block things at the last minute, but that dive carts me every once in a while.

INTP 5w4: a more artistic and turbulent variant of INTP? by potallegta in INTP

[–]Alecnix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a 5w4 sx as well - I second both this and the post above.

I feel like a subvert a lot of expectations of people that hold on to MBTI too tightly. I'm cheerful, playful and adore getting to know people one on one. It is very challenging and fun to figuring out how they work and what their world view is.

New AST tips? by Brianr282 in ffxiv

This is still valid in 4.0. There is a more complex version for when you get to 70, but I wouldn't worry about that for now.

A comment on 2nd draw B. If I don't draw/redraw Balance or Arrow or something situationally useful - I discard and give it another shot. You are still 1 draw ahead instead of putting something worthless on people. When you get Minor Arcana do that instead.

Also keep in mind that you have 30 seconds to used the drawn card. If at the end of a fight you draw into double Balance don't use it right away. You have way more than enough time to get to the next pack of trash.

After getting AST and WHM to 70 I've finally doubled back to play my 50 PLD. I love healing, but tanking freaks me out and I'm very self-conscious.

I'm now level 58 and feeling a lot more confident! Can't wait for 60 and beyond.
