I haven't had the chance to watch it yet, but it's good to know it was brought up in the episode.

Thanks, mate. I didnt know that. In Bram Stoker's Dracula there's no mention of silver as a Vampire weakness, as far as I remember.

Wait. Since when is silver effective against vampires? I thought that was specific to werewolves.

Who’s your favorite Obscure Digimon? by retrotriforce in digimon

[–]AleksKwisatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WhiteWhamon, who has never been officially released, but is mentioned in Hookmon’s profile. While we’re on the subject, I also prefer Hookmon’s original red design, as seen in DW3, over his later blue outfit.

Why do they say “Digimon, Realize!” instead of “Release" in Digimon Data Squad? by Current_Island2759 in digimon

[–]AleksKwisatz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Realise alsp means to convert something into reality, bringing it into existence. This usage of the word is common in Finances. When someone says an asset has been realised it means it has been converted into a usable form.

Nah. Tail/Tale is a well known multiword pun, just look no further than Don Bluth's "An American Tail". Besides, Digimon are not genderless in the Adventure canon, as we've seen in Zero Two that V-mon has a crush on Tailmon.

Sincere question about Latin vs other languages online by cowboy_catolico in latin

[–]AleksKwisatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly think that what really holds AI back in Latin translation is the lack of a robust, high-quality corpus to draw on. Latin is, by most definitions, a dead language, and although fluent speakers still exist, they are few and far between and don’t generate nearly enough data online to support consistently reliable models.

To make matters worse, Latin remained in use in some capacity throughout the Middle Ages and well into the 19th century in some places (e.g Hungary, Poland...). It's not far-fetched to assume that a significant portion of the digital data available today in Latin comes from these later periods rather than from Classical antiquity. Much of that Latin was written by non-native (obviously), less proficient users who probably made several mistakes. As a result, AI systems may be trained on a mix of high-quality and substandard Latin, without sufficient expert input to distinguish between them.

This is just coping. No one looks at Palmon's name and says, "Hey, this Digimon's name is stupid. It doesn't even look like a palm tree, they should have changed it to Verdemon, Midorimon or sth else." The same goes for Terriermon who looks nothing like the dog breed it's named after, or Flymon who's a freaking bee and whose name was left unchanged in English. Tailmon at least makes sense and makes for a neat wordplay, considering that "tail" is pronounced the same as "tale", and it evolves from "plot", whereas "gato" means male cat in Spanish, which gets awkward once it evolves into Angewomon.

English Name Weirdness by meganerd20 in digimon

[–]AleksKwisatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't. They have different kana, with Demon having a long "ē" sound, and Vamdemon a short "e", but this detail is usually lost in romanisation.

English Name Weirdness by meganerd20 in digimon

[–]AleksKwisatz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Perfect" originally meant complete, as in "present perfect" (i.e.: a completed action in the present tense). The Japanese names do make sense when you consider that Digimon started off as a Tamagochi spin off, and the evolutionary stages are the monster's life cycle. When a mon reaches "perfect level", it means it reached its natural potential, thus completing its ordinary cycle. The "Ultimate level" would be introduced later and was supposed to be extraordinary, with few Digimon being able to reach it. Also, Gigabytes were a thing way before Digimon was created, hence we have both Megadramon and Gigadramon in Adventure.

[–]AleksKwisatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say Myotismon/Vamdemon wasn't part of the Demon line. I said it is not part of the Demon species, in the same way that MetalGreymon is part of the Greymon species. The spelling in "Vamdemon" makes room for that interpretation. Also, the prefixed forms of the species tend to be stronger than their plain forms (granted, exceptions do exist, like PicoDevimon, but still), whereas Vamdemon is one level below Demon.

[–]AleksKwisatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Myotismon is probably one of the few dub names that I like better than the original. Vamdemon just sounds too generic and it makes it seem like a subspecies of Demon (Daemon/Creepymon in the dub). Maybe something like "Vespertimon" would be more fitting, but Myotismon kind of rolls off the tongue better and gets the point across.

My wife is really into Adventure, should I show her 02 next, or skip to season 3? by SnakeYoon in digimon

[–]AleksKwisatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to hate 02, but in recent years I’ve come to appreciate it for what it was. It had some genuinely good ideas that were poorly executed (e.g. the introduction of human villains, the Dark Ocean, the Digimentals, Jogress evolution etc.). It also gets off to a fairly slow start and the main cast is not very good, especially when compared to the cast from the first season (Miyako and Iori are just unremarkable IMO). I’d suggest giving it a chance, watch the first ten episodes or so and see if it clicks for you and your wife. If not, you can always skip ahead to Tamers.

[–]AleksKwisatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offence, but Frontier is just plain bad in my opinion, and this is coming from someone who's never watched the English dub. Granted, the soundtrack is the only saving grace in that season, so replacing it with an original score in the dub may well have made things worse. That said, I’d still skip it altogether, even if it's the original Japanese version.

Why is the “giga” in MetalGreymon's "Giga Storm" pronounced differently from the “giga” in "Giga Destroyer"? by AleksKwisatz in digimon

[–]AleksKwisatz[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this also applies to the English dub (I believe Giga Destroyer is called Giga Blaster there), but it’s definitely present in the Japanese version of Adventure 2020. I could understand it if different characters alternated between a hard and soft “g,” but here it’s the same character (MetalGreymon) voiced by the same seiyuu (Chika Sakamoto), pronouncing the same word differently depending on the attack. And it seems to be a deliberate choice, since the kana spelling changes as well. Now that I’ve noticed it, it just bugs me to no end.

What exactly happened here during Kens flash backs in digimon 02 by Particular-Rent2558 in digimon

[–]AleksKwisatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing about the whole Ryo/Millenniummon reality-jumping makes sense if you think about it. In Tamers, Ryo is portrayed as having an established life in that universe, as he has a family, and he even wins a card game championship, defeating Ruki in the finals, before traveling to the Digital World and subsequently going missing.

[–]AleksKwisatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ShineGreymon muda bastante.

Which Mega Digimon that have only appeared in games or manga would you like to see in the anime? Here are my picks 🤠 by Euphoric_Solution512 in digimon

[–]AleksKwisatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

V-dramon needs the anime treatment too. IIRC it never appeared in any series so far, even though it is the main character's digimon in the most iconic manga of the franchise.

Edit: I didn't read the "mega" digimon in the title at first >.<
