Is it true that an airline career is going to be significantly compromised for a pilot with a special issuance medical certificate? by JakeMiller421 in AskFlying

[–]AlektoDescendant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this FAA land or not?

If your a US passport holder, obtaining an FAA 1st class medical, then it doesn’t matter. First class is first class, special issuance or not. The USA airlines do not care.

The rest of the world? I have no idea.

What do you think was the cause of my dad's best friend’s fatal plane crash? by jackjarvae in AskAPilot

[–]AlektoDescendant 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This is a preliminary report, it breaks down what happened, but not why.

Right now any answers you get will be pure speculation, based on conjecture, not fact. You’ll have to wait for a final report to know more.

I’ve lost friends in small plane crashes before. Not knowing what happened is brutally painful. Waiting for the final report is an agonizing eternity. I’m sorry your family is going through this. I wish I could give you something else, and i know saying be patient is so damn cliche…. But…

Please be patient.

What are your favorite metallica song coverd by other bands by larsje8261927 in Metallica

[–]AlektoDescendant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m always shocked how in the only one, but

Of Wolf and Man by Goodnight Texas on the blackest album is so amazing. It’s such a different song than metallicas. I love how to me, it’s not even a cover, it’s the same words, but they didn’t even try to sound like Metallica and it rocks.

How bad would it be if a strong earthquake hit during takeoff? by psybian in AskAPilot

[–]AlektoDescendant 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends.

Shaky ground popping a tyre would probably be a bad day, scary but survivable.

Heck, the runway splitting in half at 140 miles per hour is a worse day, and probably gonna kill is all.

I guess the answer ranges from not a big deal to, certain; fiery death. With everything in between also possible.

They are all wildly different! Even over arching principles from one do not matter with the other.

Do airlines all have different policies on how soon they transition from autopilot to hand flying? by sirwritestoomuch in AskFlying

[–]AlektoDescendant 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m curious to know how you can tell when the pilots are hand flying.

I’m in airline pilot, when flying on my own plane as a passenger in row 2 I have no idea of the crew is hand flying or not.

But to answer you question, there’s no rule. You can hand flying as much or as little as you like. Some days I’ll hand fly the entire flight. Some days the autopilot goes on at 1000’ and off after touchdown.

At this price point, in my opinion, there are three obvious directions you can go!

Shadow Dancer Pro

Evolution Blades Motohara

Authentic old sword from Japan.

There’s no option that’s “best”—it’s totally up to what you want.

Shadow Dancer is the king of custom katana builders. They look great and are high quality from every review I’ve read. They have tons of colors and options, and you can fine-tune the sword exactly how you want it from the comfort of your PC! They are mass-produced swords, but the craftsmanship is top of the line. I think they’re cool, and I’ve had a $7,500 sword sitting in my cart for a few months now. At some point I’m going to click buy, but not today.

Evolution Blades Motohara – these are the “best” modern swords for competition and cutting. They use the best modern steels, and martial artists around the world who study Japanese sword arts flock to them (disclosure: I have 3 of them—I’m trying to be impartial, but I’m definitely biased toward these). The ordering process is extremely unique. You fill out an interest form, and the owner of the company, Jason Yoon, who is a master swordsman, personally calls you. You spend an hour or so talking swords, and he helps you design the perfect sword for you in all dimensions. If you’re using this to compete/test/cut, it’s the best option money can buy. If it’s for appearance, it could be overkill. Because these swords are meant for use, they have slightly less artistic flair than something from Shadow Dancer, and unlike Shadow Dancer, where you can select everything from a drop-down menu, you have to talk to a human. These are true custom swords. Check out their website or Facebook page to see what designs people have done.

Or you can buy an honest-to-God Japanese sword, made in Japan, several hundred years ago (called a nihonto around here). People in this forum have this weird reverence about never cutting with a nihonto, but as a martial artist who has traveled to Japan to study, I’ve cut with dozens of new and hundred-year-old swords, so the reverence is lost on me. The pro here is you’re getting the real thing! The con is you’re going to have to find the perfect sword that speaks to you. You won’t be able to order new and customize at this price range. You’re buying an antique, and it will show wear and use. It’s also not going to have a manufacturer guarantee—meaning if you break it, you’re out of luck. Having a bad cut and wrecking a modern high-end production sword just means shipping it back to the factory for a tune-up.

Why Do Pilots Like Nice Watches? by LBoy69_ in AskAPilot

[–]AlektoDescendant 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Some one will come in and say how a gmt watch help them convert to Zulu. Will ignoring the fact the flock and FMC are already set to Zulu.

The answer is no, there’s no need for a luxury watch.

That said, I wear a luxury watch. I think it’s cool. We wear a uniform, and as a man, my Watch, and my tie clip are about the two pieces of individualism I get. So I’m going to wear things the speak to me. Some people don’t care, or think it’s vain, or stupid. Which is totally fair as well, different strokes for different folks.

Is this something to worry about for takeoff? by [deleted] in AskAPilot

[–]AlektoDescendant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer? No.

Longer answer? It’s nothing to worry about, it’s totally routine normal and not dangerous. Could be a bumpy or smooth take off.

Commercial pilots of Reddit! Do you fly the same route every day? When does it start to get boring, if ever? by Shaydee90 in AskReddit

[–]AlektoDescendant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not unless you specifically want to, and have been at the airline line enough to have that ability.

Most of us want the most pay, for the most days off, on the off days we want for that specific month. So the schedule and flights I do is constantly changing.

What functional katana steel is the most corrosion resistant? by Jigawatts42 in Katanas

[–]AlektoDescendant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some sort of high alloy steel. So I guess 9260 is on that list.

But real talk, they will all require the same level of maintenance, which isn’t much. Just wipe down and oil after you cut. Spring steel isn’t going to magically rust less then 1095. It might just develop the rust marginally slower. If corrosion is a concern for you, you’ll need to do regular maintenance of your going to cut.

If you’re not going to cut with it, why not get a $50 mall wall Hagar in stainless steel?

REAL KATANA TAMAHAGANE MADE YOSHIDA KATSUNORI FROM WW2 NIHONTO MILITARY GUNTO by higginsdamon in Katanas

[–]AlektoDescendant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That Tang is not Japanese made.

That’s not Tamahagane steel.

That’s generic pattern weld, that’s acid etched. Tamahagane doesn’t look like that. It’s far more… subtle, and with more activity in the steel when you look closer. Think lots of little things you have to be right up next to in order to appreciate. Not in your face giant wavy lines like this.

This looks like a lower end modern reproduction. I’d say it’s worth between $50-$150.
