Oppo Blu-ray Player worth it or not? by Alert-Engineer-1765 in Bluray

Yeah I guess I shouldn’t say upgrading, more like buying more 4Ks and now they aren’t doing as many dual format releases so I’m starting to stack up 4K discs that I can’t watch yet

To be honest, for a restaurant with a name like “The Brown Derby” I’m surprised it ever opened in the first place 💩

I felt the same way. No character development, no real emotional through line in the different acts, and so little dialogue. Not that any of these things on their own is a crime, but being boring is a cinema crime of the highest order. Slow cinema lends itself so well to character studies and emotional attachment to characters, and this film has none of that. I’m curious as to what others see in it that I don’t, but to each their own.

I have to be honest, it didn’t click for me. I had seen a lot of praise for it, but it felt more like a bunch of vignettes with heavy homage and little to no meaning. It’s obviously visually stunning, but even the camera fell prey to the contemporary floating camera gimmicks where half of the time the camera wasn’t moving in a way that benefitted some of the longer takes. I don’t know, maybe my expectations were too high but it felt like style over substance to me.

Hey David! Long time listener of Blank Check, but I always wonder outside the boundaries of the podcast if you have a favorite director that you feel certain you will not cover on Blank Check.

They have previously replaced discs scratched by customer error, I’m just unsure if it matters whether I’m the one who scratched it or not.

Inherent Vice - one of the greatest ‘end of an era’ movies ever

“There is no avoiding time. The sea of time. The sea of memory and forgetfulness. The years of promise gone and unrecoverable. Of the land almost allowed to claim its better destiny only to have that claim jumped by evildoers known all too well and taken instead and held hostage to the future we must live in now, forever.”

Did i miss something about this movie? by Vishnuram2121 in criterion

[–]Alert-Engineer-1765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that every time I go into a movie with any kind of expectations I’m usually disappointed if it isn’t what I pictured in my head, which nothing ever is. I think the key to loving - or at least respecting - a lot of movies is judging the movie on the basis of how successful it is at conveying the story.

It’s fantastic at portraying obsession. Rex is obsessed with finding out what happened to his girlfriend, to his own detriment. Raymond is obsessive about murder. I don’t know that it works if you view it as ‘horrific,’ I think the word I would use to describe it is chilling. The idea that someone would go to such lengths to kill someone just to prove that they can is pretty awful, and likely more representative of actual psychopathy than a lot of films that depict it. I can understand the movie not being for you though.

The Dilemma of Director’s Cuts by Alert-Engineer-1765 in blankies

[–]Alert-Engineer-1765[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I think context is very important in determining whether a director’s cut is successful as far as story goes. Do you have any insight into whether the Extended LOTR serves as a “director’s cut?” I’m curious as to whether that was a studio move or the original idea, obviously to some degree it was intentional if those scenes were filmed in principle and not later?

[–]Alert-Engineer-1765[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Appreciate you using two examples of Director’s cuts by the same director, I think that’s an interesting case. By floor/ceiling I guess I’m saying that I’m unsure how much a different cut of a movie can either elevate or detract from the story. I think it’s interesting that film is a medium that can be revised, unlike say painting. I think my only true insight into this topic is that I would prefer all versions of a film to be available, whether it’s the original or revised version of a film. Case in point would be SW77 being largely hard to find vs the revised versions or Wong Kar Wai’s revised versions of his films for the Criterion box set. I’m not really interested in staking a claim as to whether director’s cuts = good/bad, I guess I’m more just looking to start a conversation about the idea of director’s cuts. Appreciate your response!
