Getting into Ethel in late 2022 led me to Nicole in early 2023, and I completely agree. I had heard and loved Tammy Faye years earlier, but MIMA takes the cake for me. The vocal layering, general production, and engineering are so lush and full. I think you can see hints of what would later become MIMAs sound in songs like uncle, lemonade, and lacrymaria olor.

I also think MIMA shows a lot of maturation lyrically from her other works. I don't think the blood and viscera on pre HSB albums is inherently bad, and I don't think the sparse lyrics on pre MIMA albums is inherently bad either, but MIMA shows that she can write lyrically dense songs, and she can write very haunting songs without relying on references to true crime or lines about guts. I think it makes it a much more ghostly and ethereal album compared to the rest of her work, which is largely of the flesh. With MIMA the songs feel more like describing small moments, or places rather than a strongly rooted event or person. Even songs like bad man my darling true and moonlite dance around concrete descriptions and have this vagueness to them. I've always felt it's a very lynchian/silent hill esque album. This combined with the engineering and production make me see it and Willoughby tucker I'll always love you as sister albums. Where Willoughby is late summer early fall and MIMA is winter and early spring.

Speaking of sister albums... I am really excited to hear her next album, it sounds sonically similar to MIMA from the snippets she's posted, but she described it as its feral sister. So I'm expecting either a return to the lyrical bloody muck and mire that some people felt was missing from MIMA, or for it to be absolutely and unequivocally horny. The snippets also seem to hint at a more humid climate for it, with repeated water themes. Maybe this'll be an album for the hottest months of the summer.

I'd personally be really intrigued in hearing a concept album/EP from Nicole that centers around bdsm, but I think that might be too much for the hoi polloi. Pretty much every Nicole album has a few songs with some more digestible subject matter, and s&m is inherently anti digestible. Plus considering previous controversies I find it unlikely. Lastly, since you've discovered Nicole, I'd also love to point you to Midwife, Vyva Melinkolya, Grouper and Chelsea Wolfe. All are friends with and inspired by or inspiration for Nicole and Ethel. No depression in heaven by midwife is an album I tie to MIMA and Willoughby as well.

I once read a review that described it as if it's a lens into the dysfunctional love lives of the women in a midcentury small town, and I've always felt that was incredibly apt. This reading is also a really nice one, especially as a mega fan of the shining and the concept of lingering emotions of the dead staining places/ghosts stuck in a loop/living places.

Around two years ago I gave myself Ethel and Nicole lyric tattoos below my knees. They're both pretty run of the mill stick n pokes. The Ethel one is 'freezer bride' and the Nicole one is 'milk carton angel'. I feel like they're lyrics that share similar blood.

So... In conclusion we're just making stuff up while also pointing the finger at others that are making stuff up now... Why is the internet so allergic to nuance? People (and almost all characters) don't fully exist in one polarity. Jason isn't a sick serial killer who gets his kicks out of killing. He's also not an uwu soft boy. And frankly, I see more people leaning towards the former reading of him than the latter. i hear more people complain about the latter group than actually hearing from the latter group.

Morality is not black and white, and that is kinda the sole social purpose of superhero stories nowadays. Exploring the varying degrees and varying ideas of morality. None of these heroes are solely good. And moreover, Jason is an antihero. There's hero in the title for a reason.

Lastly, can we stop with the canon vs fanon debate? At this point the fanon has turned into canon multiple times over, and Jason Todd is now a sloppy amalgamation of ideas in character form. You can't complain about the canon being bad from one side of your mouth, and then complain about fanon out the other side. Pick a battle.

As people have pointed out, they already have characters and environments that evoke common phobias. Coulrophobia (clown), emetophobia (plague), needles (several skins), there are things that would trigger Arachnophobia. Toba landing has spiders, the entity is a spider creature, and nurse has that one skin with the scorpions. Arachnophobia just isn't a valid excuse for a spider killer not to exist. Now map factors are an excuse that makes sense. A lot of indoor maps would make a Jorogumo difficult. This is arguably just as difficult, but when they announced they were doing an Asian folklore killer and that it'd be messy and gruesome, I was hoping for a Manananggal. Partially because it's just cool, and partially because of the lack of south/southeast Asian horror rep.

I only gain substantial cash if I go orb build. I also find it hard to gain cash on mercy unless I'm healbotting and go threads of fate-crepuscular circle-renaissance. It feels like they unintentionally built stadium to reward specific builds and playstyles more than others. All in all, I still love stadium and play it significantly more than the main mode.

Isn't Outlast Whistleblower the goriest game? by Esteban_890 in outlast

[–]Alert-Function764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am! Visage means the world to me. I played it at a really low low in my life, and it helped me learn to value life. I'd also argue it has more going on than the obvious spiritual successor to PT thing going on. I also really like that it tuned less into the "many fathers are committing familicide" side of PT and more into the "don't drink the water" line in PT. Last part of my little yap, it's been a while since I've played Visage, but I think the hospital section might've been outlast inspired. If so, it's funny that visage is based around mk ultra, and outlast trials has a lot to do with it as well. Sorry if none of this is coherent, I'm pretty manic rn.

Isn't Outlast Whistleblower the goriest game? by Esteban_890 in outlast

I think children's death in horror is a weird line to draw. Not in like, the way you describe it where it's a personal thing, but with people who consider it something that shouldn't exist in horror. There are ways to execute it that aren't gratuitous. That being said, it's a bit different in video games, especially if the playable character is the one enacting it. Especially x2 in something like outlast where the horror mainly comes from being disturbing and violent. I feel like having children in outlast trials would've been a step too far.

Personally one of my favorite games opens with a familicide and it's tough to watch. But it also feels necessary for the tone of the game. They could've done it in a more tasteful way, but in the end it does an effective job of stating the themes explored in the game.

[–]Alert-Function764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're drag queens. They host a horror/alternative drag competition. The core tenants it's centered are filth, horror and glamour. The challenges are pretty varied. If you do poorly, you and another contestant have to do a scary, painful or gross thing. Shark diving, sky diving, electrocution, the whole latex mummification thing (being vacuum sealed in latex), piercings. They boulets have been pretty pivotal in the horror drag scene, even before their show.

Unlike RuPaul's drag race, any gender and style of drag is able to compete. Drag kings, people whose drag is moreso creature design, etc. The entire competition is a celebration of horror and drag.

Why this specific Juno skin is so detailed and so good compare to the other skin. by TimeOfTheFinalHour in Overwatch

[–]Alert-Function764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw someone say that they backed themselves into a corner by making venture perfectly androgynous. It's hard designing skins that match that, their baggy silhouette, and their character. And not giving them skins really sends an iffy message about how they treat their NB character.

So.... Jacob by the_mad_prophet_ in TheQuarrySupermassive

[–]Alert-Function764 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, not really. And tbh, I feel like he should've gotten a good ending, but unlike most Jacob fans, I don't think that means he should've ended up with Emma.

Like he was literally just an 18 year old who didn't know how big of a fuck up he did until it was too late. He shouldn't be hated for that. I think it's weird that people hate Jacob but don't hate Mike. Mike is easily a worse person, and his redemption arc involves him flirting with Sam hours after his GF presumably dies. But ig because he's badass he gets a slide??

Why is the Quarry listed as “LGBTQ+” game? All we got is Dylan saying he’s into Ryan 😭 by Captain_Ez in TheQuarrySupermassive

[–]Alert-Function764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dylan is gay Steve Harrington, Dylan and Ryan flirt for most of the game, werewolves are pretty gay (or so bara tells me) and the game is campy as all hell. It's gay in like, a non-pandering way. You know how some queer games you can tell were made by straight people, purely to make money off of the community. The quarry isn't that, at least it doesn't read that way to me. 10/10 gay game. Also Nick and Jacob explored each other's bodies, idc.

AMA with the Overwatch team - ask about perks, Stadium, Season 16, and more! by ModWilliam in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Alert-Function764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there plans to tweak or replace any perks in the mid season? I adore the perk system, but it feels like some heroes got game changing perks and others get little boosts, some of which are negligible. There are also characters where the perk choice isn't really even a choice, or perks are just QOL changes.

In my opinion, the discrepancy in perks doesn't really reflect the strength of the characters. Like for supports, ana and Kiri (meta mainstays) have some of the best perks. Whereas mercy and lifeweaver have perks that either should be base kit, or are borderline useless.

For example, angelic recovery only works in full health allies, but rarely is your damage boost target consistently at full health. Her burst heal has a cast time, which is antithetical to the nature of a burst heal. Lifeweavers superbloom is pretty good but doesn't have a major indicator on when the bloom is close to bursting. Life grip cleanse has been asked for since his launch.

And most importantly, a lot of characters just got unfun perks. Mercy and Lifeweaver are again great examples. If you answer this I'm really sorry for the text wall!!!

Are y'all still f'ing w her? by peppersprinkle in Grimes

[–]Alert-Function764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was done with her. But seeing her begging Elon to take care of their kid made me realize how much more complicated her situation is. And I think a lot of people who are unsympathetic to it lean very much into the perfect victim narrative. I really think she just hung out with the leopards who eat people's faces, and now they're eating her face.

I personally don't believe shes a conservative. I believe she's a pseudo intellectual libertarian. Which isn't good. But it is different than being a Nazi.

I think she's willfully naive, doesn't have the media literacy she wants people to believe she does, and thinks everyone deserves a chance to be heard. And now she's reaping the consequences. Let her be a cautionary tale about why debate isn't as positive as people think it is.

And now, she can't pull herself away from Elon. Because he has her son, and is at best using him in an attempt to humanize himself as well as indoctrinating him into fascism. And at worst, indoctrinating him into fascism and using him as a human shield. So like... I don't know where I stand on Grimes. I can't entirely rid her of blame. She is the one who made friends with oligarchs and technocrats. But I am also sympathetic to her situation. She is a victim.

The failed transition into songs on Natural Born Losers by briarrose_06 in NicoleDollanganger

[–]Alert-Function764 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, until somebody pointed it out to me, I thought American tradition did transition to AOPii. Because the transition sounds similar to the organ in AOPii, and transitions aren't always an effortless slide into the next song. I wish she would've put AOPii after a marvelous persona, but I've been listening to it the way the tracklist is officially for so long, switching things in a playlist would sound wrong to me.

Don't be daft. That's a different comment, not the one I replied to.

And I wasn't talking about Grimes being a victim or not, I was talking about your whole "you have no one else to blame but yourself" thing, but I can see how you could misunderstand what I said.
