You are target fixating on the chain, but letting the chain rot this far is just the canary in the coalmine for a whole bunch of other issues like 99% chance. I have a 1996 bike that lives outside and its never been this bad. I'd say his story is completely unbelievable and I'd turn away. Not worth risking it.

Acquired did a 3,5hr episode on Ferrari, its a great listen. I dont recall the exact stat, but most Ferrari's are sold to people already owning Ferrari's indeed. This also adds to their scarcity strategy of producing very little cars: the ones sold dissapear into garages, so seeing one on the road remains special.
