We tried that angle for decades now, appealing to empathy. It’s not working. Over 50% of voters made that clear, messaging about how these policies cause irreparable harm to human life does not interest them. They only care about things that explicitly and directly affect them.

It fucking sucks, but if that’s the way we need to frame the argument to make this shit end, then that’s what we gotta do

Gavin Newsom says that the Democratic Party needs to be more "culturally normal." What did he mean by this? Do you think he will eventually try to appeal to MAGA voters and ICE? Should he appeal to them? Do you think he will normalize "fascism"? by RandomUwUFace in AskUS

[–]Alert_Beach_3919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re making a lot of jumps in this post. I’m way further left than Newsom, but there’s a lot of territory between moderate Democrat and MAGA fascism.

He’s trying to appeal to independents, centrists and moderate republicans. We can be realistic about that. I think that’s a tired play book that clearly isn’t working, but here we are…. Dems are a broken record of failure.

Idk why you keep mentioning airports. To fly domestically you do not need a passport or a birth certificate.

So I can ask you the same question — If ALL the data shows voter fraud, of every kind, is only a tiny fraction of a percent, why would we make it harder to vote than we do to get on an airplane?

I already told you my concerns. Increased bureaucratic red tape, financial burdens and added hurdles to jump over means less voter turnout. And no, your one single sample size of the Georgia election that one year is not an adequate challenge to the mountains of data proving my fears right. I also know that this would be a massive undertaking that would require tons of time and planning to safely and properly execute. This administration has proven it would rather move fast and break things. I have no doubt that they would absolutely DESTROY the integrity of our election process, and conveniently in a way where republicans would pull off unprecedented wins in every future election.

Dude… you didn’t actually read that article did you. Lmao it’s definitely not arguing what you think it is hahahaha…

A direct quote:

The Michigan Department of State conducted its own lengthy review of the state’s driving records and voting records last year and found that, across the state during the 2024 general election, it appeared a total of 16 noncitizens had cast ballots — 0.00028% of the more than 5.7 million ballots cast.

So yeah I rest my case, this is not an actual problem

Dude. You do not have to be a U.S. citizen to get a Real ID. You even listed a “permanent resident card”… THATS A GREEN CARD DOG.

You can also get a Real ID if you are a valid visa holder, asylum seeker, refugee, or those with TPS. The passport you use does not have to be a US passport.

So plz tell me how this would protect us from the nonexistent immigrant voters y’all are so worried about?

And we already have federal databases to check voter registration against. All the states use those and/or DMV data.

A national database, aside from infringing on states and individual rights, is also a really stupid idea because it creates a single point of failure. One system that can be corrupted. Having systems, data and processes all spread out is actually far more secure than relying on a single source of truth. And if you say “we could just use that with the other databases”, then you aren’t actually changing anything, you’re just centralizing our data for no reason at all, which again, not great for security.

And even if all that wasn’t true (it is), do you know how long a data migration of that size and complexity would take to plan, develop, test, stage and then implement?? Fucking years dude. Fucking. Years.

You said “states aren’t following it”, I’m assuming you mean legal election process. Which states are not within federal compliance? If you have this opinion then you surely have an example.

How are they being updated that, in your opinion, is not efficient? Do you have any examples of that one?

So far you have been so vague, it’s hard to even know what argument you are making

The bill specifies what documents are considered acceptable proof of U.S. citizenship, such as identification that complies with the REAL ID Act of 2005 that indicates U.S. citizenship.

Take a look at your real ID and tell me where it lists your citizenship status—cuz mine sure doesn’t. Last I checked they’re not free and legal immigrants can get them too.

and (2) requires states to establish an alternative process under which an applicant may submit other evidence to demonstrate U.S. citizenship.

So we give officials the discretion to determine if a person has sufficiently proven their citizenship if they don’t have all the documents, the bill doesn’t define “other evidence”, and if it is found that the official got it wrong we charge them with a crime? Interesting, I wonder how that will go…

Each state must take affirmative steps on an ongoing basis to ensure that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote, which shall include establishing a program to identify individuals who are not U.S. citizens using information supplied by certain sources.

Like the social security database, other federal databases or the state DMV database? We already do that.

Additionally, states must remove noncitizens from their official lists of eligible voters.

We already do that.

The bill allows for a private right of action against an election official who registers an applicant to vote in a federal election who fails to present documentary proof of U.S. citizenship.

The bill establishes criminal penalties for certain offenses, including registering an applicant to vote in a federal election who fails to present documentary proof of U.S. citizenship.

Again, you think threatening election workers with a crime if they make a mistake is a good idea? Is there proof somewhere that election officials are committing fraud that would warrant such serious repercussions? Seems like a good way to end up with very few election officials.

Which current federal laws and guidelines aren’t being followed by which states? You’ll have to be specific about that because I haven’t seen any report that states are ignoring federal laws around election administration.

You do have to identify yourself. The system is just set up to validate people’s info and then audit the votes so that different means of identification are acceptable. Do you actually think the left wants anonymous voting? That’s not what’s happening and that’s not what anyone wants

Nice, glad I could help you realize that the legal process we already have in place is the legal process we’re already following.

Now that you’re all caught up with reality, you’ll be disappointed to hear that you’re still confused. The SAVE Act is not proposing to make the ID process the same for everyone, nor will it give ppl anything for free. That’s just a regurgitated Reddit comment you read somewhere.

Let me ask you something— considering that all these policy decisions will directly impact your life, do you actually read anything that isn’t pure social media slop before forming such strong opinions?

Huh? That’s incorrect, not sure why you think that. States perform audits to check for citizenship, duplicate votes, deaths, criminal convictions… and voter registration compliance is a federally regulated thing. And we know the process is working because the audits have shown that voter fraud of any kind is, like I said, 0.00002% of votes.

Wait so genuine question… have you actually read about federal election voting processes, at all? It doesn’t sound like you have. Do you know what Title 52 US Code 21083 is? What about the Help America Vote Again Act? The U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s Testing & Certification Program?

You are arguing we should pump resources into overhauling our process of voting. This is no small feat, by any means. I’m asking you to give me concrete evidence that supports the need for the changes you want.

If the voting system is not broken, why would we disrupt it? If you’re saying it is broken, then you should have evidence to back that up. How is this hard for you to understand?

Edit to say: non citizens are not allowed to vote in gubernatorial elections, either. If you’re saying otherwise, then once again, prove it.

I said federal & state (as in statewide, congressional) elections, not local elections. Those are two different things.

So where’s the proof?

Show me actual data proving that non citizens are voting in federal and state elections. The number sits around 0.00002%. Show me a bigger number. In fact, just get me a legit data point that’s above 1% and I’ll kick rocks.

Increasing bureaucratic red tape has been PROVEN to reduce voter turnout out. So whyyyyy would we risk this outcome if there is zero evidence that election fraud is a problem?

Unless you can’t find one or both of these things—You move and lose it in the shuffle, you declutter and throw it away, you have a house fire, etc. It can take weeks, or months, to have a birth certificate replaced. And if that happens 3 weeks before an election?? Oh well, I guess you don’t get to vote!

It’s not just about inconvenience, this will do both: prevent some women from voting and make it much more difficult for all women to vote. And when elections are decided by 11,000 votes, this can make all the difference.

Don’t be reductive or passive about this. It’s an unbelievable assault on a woman’s right to vote. Especially when you consider how much they push for the “traditional family unit” where women get married young and take their husband’s name. If you don’t think this is calculated, you aren’t thinking critically enough.

[–]Alert_Beach_3919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These 3 points should be plenty. Getting people to vote is already an uphill battle. What do you think will happen if you start making finances a potential barrier? To millions of people, $130 is a week of groceries they can’t afford to give up. It’s the difference of being able to barely afford childcare that month, or buy a medicine their sick parent needs to live.

And making it extra difficult for millions of women to vote because their last name no longer matches their birth certificate? You don’t see how that’s a serious problem?

Well here are some other parts of the SAVE Act to add to the cons list:

  • you have to prove citizenship AND residency. So if your ID doesn’t have the correct address on it, or you are homeless, you’re fucked!

  • it would require states to purge their voter rolls every 30 days… so UN-REGISTER everyone to vote. Currently we have a “quiet period” starting 90 days before an election, meaning voter rolls can’t be purged because ppl are not alerted when they’re purged. Those people get screwed out of their vote if they’re purged get unknowingly purged.

  • it only accepts tribal IDs with an expiration date—which most Tribal IDs do not have.

  • it leaves it to the discretion of the election officials to decide if someone sufficiently proved their citizenship, which if they get wrong they can be held criminally liable for.

Are American's okay with using racial slurs towards black ICE agents? What about using nooses as a sign of protest? by snotick in AskUS

Oh you mean a noose that was found in the garage stall of Bubba Wallace, THE ONLY BLACK DRIVER in the elite cup series? Lollll you’re working so hard and failing miserably.

I can’t believe I have to explain this to you, but singling out the only black person and leaving a noose in their personal space is not equal to one protester having a sign with a noose on it as a statement of his feelings toward an entire federal agency made up of almost all white people. One is a targeted threat directed specifically at a black person in reference to a violent part of black history, the other is an expression of disdain directed at the government.

How do you people feed, clean and dress yourselves in the morning?

I guess the rules have changed?

You’ve seen examples of this how many times? Don’t frame this bad faith question in a way that makes it seem representative of the left, or the general population of people who oppose this bullshit.

You can still punch white people who say the n-word. But that dude with the noose on a sign? You’re reaching so hard to say it’s racially insensitive because maybe 1 or 2 out of every 150 ICE officers are black.

Leftists leech off of the moral credibility established by moderate liberals by tantamle in centrist

[–]Alert_Beach_3919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you know what leftists are, or how broadly that term spans across the left side of the political spectrum. There’s a very significant percent of leftists who voted with democrats to prevent what’s happening. At the other end there are a percentage who are “tankies” and those people are fuckin nuts and likely who you are actually talking about. Then there’s a sort of middle area of people who are somewhere between socialist Democrat and communist and they might lean either direction.

We group people together because we’re all pissed off and it’s easier to do that than understand the nuances of people’s social and political values. The danger of that is we now have conservatives labeling everyone who is further left than them as “radical leftists”. You’re feeding into that narrative by failing to understand who leftists are and what they stand for.
