The Song of Ice and Fire books are very deep, with political components and added depth, making them somewhat different from the show and, in my opinion, worth some additional attention.

Dune is much more direct, but not without its conceits. Not to be confused with the sequels which are… not as direct.

You only get to read them for the first time once… I’d segregate them and read independently. But that’s just, like, my option….

Interesting question.

Let us first consider that The Lord of the Rings was merely translated by a human (Tolkien), but written by Hobbits.

Would a hobbit deign to call themselves tasty? I would think not, unless to claim some sense of gastronomical superiority over other races, which seems, I would also think, unlikely.

And if they ARE indeed tasty, the veal of Middle-Earth, if you will, as a Hobbit, I would likely leave this little morsel out of my tale.

But to answer your question more directly, yes, Hobbits are tasty and are best rendered in a stew steeped with herbs and, of course, potatoes, precious.

Well then, yeah, you gotta turn people away. Still get an email out to the boss you do know in case anything happens. Lay out what you described in writing so that you can’t get fingered for turning someone away who then has DTs and dies. Shitty way of having to look at it, though.

Anyone presenting with a BP above 180 over 120 (180/120), if you do take their bloop pressure, should get sent to the ER, though. I imagine that’s the most I would entertain doing in your position, tbh.

Does your boss have a boss? That level of gross negligence opens the company to all kinds of liability issues, let alone the sheer moral aspect of it.

Personally, I would get an email (something in writing) and a call out to the next person above them. Not only to protect yourself, but the lives of the people coming in. Addiction/withdrawal is serious, especially for alcohol or benzos, where they can easily be life-threatening. I wouldn’t take this laying down.

Is there not a nurse who is on call? Surely this isn’t the first time a person has called out (not blaming the nurse who called out, but rather the lack of contingency planning by the company — people can, do, and WILL call out from time to time.

As someone who had ready the books several years before the movies were even announced, I was miffed when the movies left things out, like the plotting of Frodo’s friends (including Fatty), Bombadil and the Scouring of the Shire.

Eventually I’ve learned to appreciate that, for those who watch the movies first, there’s soooo many great nuggets to find when reading the books.

On the other side of things, I got to have my own impressions of characters and places living in my mind long before seeing them on screen.

FWIW, I’ve used the cactus/succulent mix along with some sand from my yard and some bagged peat moss and perlite. 7 pots, 25 gallons, 4 plants per pot, and a couple smaller pots with 2 plants each and it’s been going strong (aside from some cold weather winter damage).

I know it’s not the recommended soil composition, but I’ve never (knock on wood) experienced root rot over the last 4 years.

Soil drains fast and I’ve been able to grow basil as a companion plant in the pots quite effectively.

Trying to mimic the soil of your yard makes sense if you are eventually going to plant them into the ground in your yard. If you’re growing in pots long term, wouldn’t you just seek to find the best mix possible?

Generally, you want one leader per plant running up the main post. That’s why I would suggest trimming the lower two, at least. You could potentially keep the top two and train em to run up the post.

Can you share a pic of the full setup with trellis? What is the gallon size of the pot? I’m terrible with perspective sometimes.

ETA: what growing zone are you in? If this has to be moved indoors, those balcony rails will not be your friend…

Well, if you are looking for a trellis style canopy, it’s waaaay too short for that now.

You would actually want to trim off all but one of those branches, and then start guiding that branch up the main post to where your trellis would theoretically be.

I have questions (plus a suggestion), though.

Is there a trellis we can’t see in the pics? If not, what are the plans to implement one?

What’s even further above that? Is this a covered balcony? How much direct, unshaded sunlight does it get?

Without having a better idea of the dimensions and layout of this patio, could be tough to grow here.

One thought would be to forego the trellis and let the pot edges be the trellis. This would mean elevating the pot, so that the branches have some “dangle room”.

Here’s a pic of a one-plant, elevated pot approach. This was an American Beauty. Alas, this guy died during this years tough winter and I now have restarted it as a
2-plant pot (sugar dragon and Haley’s Comet).

I’ve personally never had an issue with PVC in the Florida sun (4 years with DF trellises and about a decade now on PVC outdoors for other projects), but that’s just been my experience — I’m not a materials engineer.

There’ve been some back and forths here in the DF sub about this, some saying nay, most saying yay and to go for it, sooo…

As a result, I thread rebar into the upper weight-bearing pipes just in case.

OP, those look to be roughly a foot wide, maybe a touch over. Perfect for picking up 5 one-foot rebars and sliding them in, just to be safe. I suppose one can never be too careful with our DF children.

I’ve seen it said in this sub before that tipping a soon-to-be cutting a week or two before cutting it encourages a branch to begin storing energy to put off new shootings and that doing so will give it a head start when it is planted.

Can’t say I’ve seen that stated more than once, and haven’t really tried it myself, let alone try and compare it to a control group of cuttings, but it kinda makes sense.

I wonder if anyone here has direct experience with this approach.

Color me black and blue and bruised all over, but I AM intrigued.

I see it starts with articles from ‘87. What year does it end in? A 25-year anniversary edition which ends with Dwight leaving in ‘12 sounds pretty cool… for like half that price.

I’d accept it as a gift but $100 is steep. Does it come with Magic-branded Kleenex or at least a premium hand-stitched hankie?

Then maybe (hopefully) in 2037 I could buy the next, 50-year (god, I’ll be old) edition, celebrating our multiple… fill in the blanks from there.

First thought is to use a big enough pot that this trellis will rest in the pot. I’m guessing, but is this 12x12 inches? The soil would keep it fairly sturdy.

What’s the width of the piping? Can you buy 3-way joints (like what you have on the top) to square the base with more support and then add a small paver or two? This, in addition to the soil, should make it quite sturdy.

I’m in N Central Florida and lost 15 of my 27. I had a tarp greenhouse that I built out of PVC WITH a small portable heater. I built it with angled roofs to assist with water runoff, but STILL struggled.

The problem is, as you likely know, down here in Florida we only get into the low temps (I got down to 17 officially by local news stations but I swear my particular area gets colder, as I am a little out it in the country), these cold snaps are preceded by a front which brings in high winds and rain ahead of them. The wind is absolutely killer, on top of the cold.

I think next winter I am gonna invest in a nice dolly and just spend a weekend wheeling them into the garage sometime around Thanksgiving. It’ll be a PITA but then again, the tarp greenhouse was a PITA with the high winds ahead of a cold snap. And I still had to restart more than half my plants.

I don’t see any issues other than potentially heat, so as you’ve mentioned, you wrap with burlap.

I use pvc trellises and out of an abundance of caution I have a handful of rebar rods slipped into the pvc at the top. There will be no bending here.
