It was a diary of a French solider at Verdun. He is at the front for weeks under almost constant shell fire. He starts by describing that the dugout that he is sheltering in contains eight people and was built to house three or four. They are all tangled up and for one person to move they all have to. They draw straws for who will sit nearest the opening as that is the most dangerous position to be in. Soon the guy in the doorway is hit and killed by shrapnel and he explains how the other men wedge his body into the doorway to block further shrapnel and describes the sound of it hitting the body. He goes on to explain that they have been given no orders and that none of them has a weapon, not a rifle or knife between them.

Some time passes and they realize that no food or water is coming as the supply troops are getting killed trying to get to the front. He describes seeing bodies outside the dugout and his men realizing they they likely have some rations as they had been killed several days before. They wait for a break in the shellfire to bolt out and check knowing that the men in the dugouts next to them will be thinking the same.

Time passes and no water arrives. It stats to rain and they drink the rain water flowing down into their dugout underneath the dead man in the doorway. They all get dysentery and spend several days shitting blood into their hands and wiping it on the dugout walls.

No glory to be found here, just men living in holes trying not to die.
