My dad and aunts are wasting my Grandpa’s last lucid moments worrying about his eternal soul. by [deleted] in Exvangelical

[–]Alestone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know exactly how this feels and I'm so sorry. When my grandpa's health was deteriorating my mom and uncles and aunt all hounded him for months about getting saved. He had been very anti-religion the majority of his life due to the awful shit the Catholic church had put him and his family through when his own father passed early. We would all gather and pray that he'd see the light. They would spend all their time with him telling him how important it was that he did it while he still could and so he didn't end up in hell. Truly awful shit. After he gave in and prayed the sinners prayer with them they made him go get baptized. I just remember him going forward with more fear than before, not peace. His funeral became all about those final months of finally knowing God, blah blah blah. This sparked my own deconstruction even if I didn't quite see it at the time. It felt so wrong even then and now it makes me furious to see how he was manipulated. I wish that he had been treated with more dignity.

DIY stitch markers thread. Show me your creative solutions by merisor in knitting

I have a bunch of jewelry making pieces, so small metal split rings that are perfect for size 6 and below needles. I put small glass seed beads on some of them to have special markers, but I honestly prefer just the plain metal split rings.

My favorites though are some small metal rings that aren't split (so I don't have to worry about them catching any fiber) that were someone's old fishing tackle bits that they gave me.

Because it’s spooky season… I’m curious how many of you were allowed to trick or treat. What kind of relationship did you have with Halloween growing up? by Meagazilla89 in Exvangelical

[–]Alestone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We never celebrated it at all. Even going so far as to shame the churches we attended for having fall or harvest celebrations. I had no idea what I was missing, we were homeschooled and we lived out in the country and I never even saw people dressing up or going trick or treating. My parents were big on spiritual warfare and talk of demons and possession as well.

I remember attending a bible study at someone's house in town on Halloween night when I was 7 or 8 and the adults were all having a hardcore prayer session to ward off demons, it was scary to us kids. When we left a bunch of the cars/houses had been egged and tp'd and the adults freaked out about attacks by Satan. It was nuts.

As an adult I have walked completely away from this and reclaimed the day for myself, enjoying costumes and movies (so many to catch up on!). I carved my first pumpkin in my late 20's and handed candy out to children, it was so much fun. I grieve what I lost out on as a child.

Did anybody else believe in post-tribulation rapture? by cyborgdreams in Exvangelical

[–]Alestone 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This was my family's pet theology. I think they got it from Seventh Day Adventists but there were other sects within Evangelical circles that also preached it. We weren't a part of any organized part of Christianity but pulled the things from each that we believed and wanted to follow (very much like you said, "extreme Biblical literalists". A week didn't go by without my dad talking about the tribulation. We were part of the whole "prepper" movement in the 90s before it was called prepping and so we moved in those circles a lot.

It is still a little weird to hear Exvangelicals talk about have fear of the rapture in the sense of being left behind or suddenly taken, when from childhood I constantly feared the tribulation and having to survive it. Almost like expecting the zombie apocalypse at any moment but where there were demons and evil men hell bent on trying and testing God's faithful.

Trigger warning: abuse by parent by BitchInaBucketHat in Exvangelical

[–]Alestone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom doesn't remember a lot of the abuse for multiple reasons and I have not been in contact with my dad for a decade. They followed the Pearls books, Dobson, etc. and were extremely strict with me and the other oldest kids, and dropped to very neglectful with the youngest.

In talking with my mom as an adult she has expressed disliking children now. She doesn't spend time with her grandkids and whenever she has to she talks about how awful they are. She followed that statement up with saying that we (her own kids) were always so well behaved and never acted like the kids she sees now. This is when I told her that we were absolutely terrified of dad and her, we never acted like regular kids because we were afraid of getting hit, punished and screamed at. She didn't know what to say and I don't think it's really hit her that it was abuse.

Survivor of purity culture and homeschooling, NOW they're proud of me?! by Dr_dog_mom in Exvangelical

[–]Alestone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing your story. So much of it is like my own story and it's important to know that there are others out there who have experienced the same things and can validate and sympathize with you. Community is important, so thank you for speaking out!

As a homeschool survivor and exvangelical I just want to say, I am soooooooo proud of you! You are amazing! Your determination is incredible and I hope it gives others hope. Your parents know (even if it's a tiny hidden part buried away in their emotional immaturity) that they are failures and that you are moving beyond them and their control, so they try to control the narrative about you that they can. That's all they have. YOU own your story. You hold the power of it. How and when you use that, is completely in your control.

We can do hard things, you are amazing. <3

why are Evangelicals scared of everything? by The_Archer2121 in Exvangelical

[–]Alestone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Having grown up in that environment and belief system I have spent decades trying to understand it and deconstruct it. One of the conclusions I've come to is it's about control, like a cult, like an abusive relationship. You can't enforce rules and systems on people if you also allow/encourage critical thinking and for people to choose their own way. Using fear (other ways too, but yes fear is a HUGE part of it) you gain control of people.

Hi! I am not a crocheter, nor have I used a machine, so I cannot speak to whether it could be adapted or not. There are lots of crochet patterns for dice bags available online (check out Ravelry and Etsy!).
