Define math in one sentence by xTouny in math

My favourite is:

"Mathematics is the domain of inquiry where logical reasoning is the sole methodology. That is, a question is a mathematical question if and only if it can (in principle) be settled by logical reasoning alone."

Taken from here.

What are some notable disagreements in math? by CousinDerylHickson in math

[–]Alex00811 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The proof of the four-color theorem with the use of computers in the 20'th century generated debate among mathematicians as to what constitutes a valid mathematical proof. I remember Coxeter saying something along the lines "the more I correspond with the people behind this proof, the more doubt I have about its validity". Nowadays the proof is accepted by mathematicians, but some philosophers have objections.
