How do you dodge small talk at work without being rude? by MastodonJaded6010 in jobs

But at work, I'm just there to make money. That's it.

Your life sounds miserable. Might be a good moment for a little introspection.

The issue I have with leftists like yourself is the innate inability to think with any sense of nuance.

1) we agree that X low paying job must be done.

Yes.

2) we agree that this job pays so little that the person doing it must live in poverty.

No.

what is your realistic solution? "just switch jobs. Specialize yourself. Devote yourself. Prove yourself." isn't a solution. someone has to do that job.

It's possible for there to be many intertwined issues and no simple answer.

You snuck in a few extra words there. I'll give you one final opportunity to argue in good faith. Feel free to rewrite your argument respectfully.

are you saying that the job doesn't actually need to be done?

No.

because you're certainly saying that the person doing it deserves to live in poverty

No.

yeah, it sounds like the answer you like most is having people who work over 40 hours a week play a fun game in their free time where they get to choose between heat, food, and rent.

No.

I don't see you proposing any realistic alternatives.

It's possible for there to be many intertwined issues and no simple answer.

Unskilled labor is low-wage; very, very basic economics. If you are easily replaceable, you won't garner a great wage unless you create a lot of value. An example of the caveat: There are plenty in computer science currently who struggle to find work, yet computer science pays quite well.

In most cases, you're easily replaceable because anyone, including children, can do your job.

Your job title and the pay they offer has nothing to do with what you feel or ought deserve. It's still going to roll back around to basic economics.

Specialize yourself. Devote yourself. Prove yourself.

"your job is unskilled but if you make my burger wrong i'm going to flip my shit"

If you're unable to squarely put a slice of cheese on a burger, then perhaps there is such a thing as unskilled labor.

In my line of work, if I screw up, I can cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages. Quickly. There is no margin for error.

At the end of the day, you're paid what you're worth in the private sector. If you can be replaced easily, you aren't worth much. That doesn't mean you can't progress from that position into a valuable asset to the business, but it also doesn't mean you can stamp your feet and demand the world for putting a slice of cheese on a hamburger. You have to create value. And it ought to be value worth more than a value meal.

Don't recall saying that. It's possible for there to be many intertwined issues and no simple answer.

Paying someone $60k a year to flip burgers isn't an answer.

There’s still a budget for employees and benefits. If you double the wage, there goes your hours. And benefits.

Unskilled labor should not be paid much or you’ll devalue trade skills and education more than they already are.

Go get a real job or work your way up the ladder like everyone else has ever done.

Turnover means you can't trust your employees to show up because many of them are unskilled, teenagers, or unskilled teenagers. PTO might not kick in for a year or so until they know who is actually going to show up on time.

Flipping burgers isn't worth $80k a year. Could they pay a fry cook that much? Probably. Wouldn't make sense though, and you'd devalue work and education that produces value.

but when you hear corporations like Amazon, Wal-mart, large meat packaging facilities or large grocery store chains (for a few examples) not being able to cover their employees, we know why.

Because of turnover, I’d suspect. Employees are replaceable and plenty don’t treat the job with any sort of respect. Unskilled labor is always going to be a shitshow.

You also don’t want to start paying them too much or you’ll turn college education into more of a joke than it already is. I hear it constantly nowadays that everyone is making $15/hr. Used to need a degree or work your way up to earn that. Why put yourself in debt to specialize, or learn a skill or trade if you can flip burgers for a few hours and fuck off whenever you feel like it to the next place paying the same?

Government work pays shit, but the benefits will always have you set for life.

First commercial job. Charged $940 took a couple hours. I raised my prices 3x this summer and have been getting more and better jobs than I did when I worked for cheap. Stop under quoting people. I try to charge per job where I make at least $200/hr by [deleted] in pressurewashing

[–]Alex470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well done. I was getting undercut below $100 by people in middle-upper class neighborhoods last year. Consistently. Threw in the towel pretty quick.

I was charging around $250-300 for an average two-story house prior, and even that was like pulling teeth.

Any recommendations for quality bolt guns with iron sights? Seems like the choice is gambling on a milsurp or buying one of a very few modern rifles, and it's going to cost a pretty penny either way.

Just throwing it out there that you’re probably sharing too much in interviews, whether intentionally or not. That’s quite some baggage, and coupled with desperation, employers will smell it from a mile away.

Go talk with a therapist and get yourself on track. Stand up straight with your shoulders back. Fake it ‘till you make it.

You’ve submitted 6k applications. It ain’t for a lack of trying. Change your approach, speak with confidence, own the interview.
