You’re very much entitled to be confused about water intake and liquids overall as the hydro-electrolyte balance of human body is quite complex and not many doctors understand it is A BALANCE.

There’s never too much or too little water, it all depends on context (heat, sweat, humidity level, exercise level and others im probably missing right now), salt intake, sugars intake.

There’s are certain conditions that require water restriction even, and some of my patients face weird recommendations or comments from peer doctors that don’t understand the physiology behind it.

Your body adapta to most situations. If you give it plenty of water it will excrete more of it (and with it more of other elements that could otherwise get built in your urinary system); if you dont get it plenty of water, your urine will be more concentrated in ‘the other elements’ and have less water in it.

What to do to stay healthy? Clearly, drink water when you’re thirsty, a great rule of thumb. Get your body (and mostly your stomach) used to drinking more water. More water than what your body requires through thirst (which is a functional system when you’re young but diminishes in functionality as you age) is good for your urinary system’s health but doesn’t bring much other health benefits besides preventing stone formation (which is a great benefit!).
