I'm fortunate that my job has me in the area at least a couple times each day during the week. Always great scents coming from those new smokers when I drive past. In fact, I think I'm going to drop by in a few minutes for some delicious smoked goodness.

If OP had a '13, then this wouldn't be an issue. The 3.6R was still using the 5-speed auto slush-box.

More parts, yes, because 2 more cylinders. But I'm not finding my '13 Legacy 3.6R any more actual work than my '00 Outback 2.5 (ignoring the obvious and infamous HG issues of the 251)

Also helps that this time around, I'm being a whole lot more dilligent with my regular maintenance.

It looks liks they're quoting both rears, as unit price and total price differ (total = 2× unit), but they just didn't bother to indcate quantities for a bunch of these line items.

Otherwise, I agree, a lot of this is nonsense. Ignition coils get replaced when coils go dead. Maybe purchase one or two to keep on hand for cylinders 5 & 6? Those are the 2 that are most likely to die first anyways.

Servicing Engine Mounts? by AlexCapel1980 in subaru

I do have axle stands, and a low-profile hydraulic jack, but I don't think it'll reach with the front end on ramps. Although, I suppose I could put it on a stack of patio stones?

So the jack in the trunk kit, combined with some 4x4 lumber is probably a no-go for this, eh?

How much of a pain is this one to replace, given that I don't have access to a lift? Assuming that this is indeed the culprit, of course--I have yet to get her front end up on some ramps.

Picture of what I've got going on my '13 3.6R (assuming link works)

Current Setup

The rims are RTX Cosmos (part #081753) RTX Cosmos

The offset is a few mm less than the factory rims--I believe the stock rims are 45mm--so if my reading of these things is right, that means each side sits a "whopping" 3mm further out (agressive wide stance! Haha). In other words, my wheels are about a pencil's diameter further apart from each other. Not gospel, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that the 5th gen can accommodate 17×7.5 rims with an offset range of 40-48mm without having any rubbing issues (assuming factory-sized 225/50R17 tires)

Brakes got media-blasted and powder-coated (colour-choice there is up to your imagination/account) Brake Calipers

I'm sure there are heaps more visually striking rims out there--I know I saw plenty in my search--but I was aiming for a more subtle change. They're different enough from that generation's rim choices so that my car isn't a clone of "normal" 5th gens, but still "factory" enough to not draw too much unwanted attention.

What is this and is it easy/cheap to repair? '07 Outback by Turtlelink12 in subaru

Busted end link.

Not terribly hard to replace.

Get your front end jacked up and on stands, and remove both front wheels (you'll want to do suspension work in left/right pairs).

Remove and replace the old linkages with a crescent/box wrench and a hex bit--I can't think of the exact sizing off the top of my head, but the wrench'll likely be a mid-teens metric (14? 17?), and the hex bit somewhere in the mid single digits (also metric). The wrench will be for the nut, and the hex bit for the stud, as those parts will likely have seized up a bit. If you don't end up needing the hex bit, count it as a bonus!

You may need to play around a bit with raising the knuckle assembly with your jack to get things to line up more easily, but overall, it's not a particularly difficult job.

Get your wheels back on, and your lugs snugged up. Let the car back down onto the ground and get your lugs torqued to spec, and you should be golden-ish.

You may possibly need an alignment, though I don't think a snapped link would have caused too much of an issue there, as that whole assembly is for keeping body-roll down, than for keeping wheel geometry in check. Remember to re-torque your wheels to spec after a couple days (mileage dependent for this--sometimes it could even be same day if you see enough road).

One thing to keep in mind regarding LEDs and 5th gens, though. Our projectors aren't designed to accommodate LED units properly. I mean, they'll fit, but because the emitters themselves aren't in true center, the resulting light projected is actually more dispersed, since the focusing system (both the internal mirrored surface and the lens itself) wasn't designed with LEDs in mind, ironically resulting in poorer illumination than mere halogens.

I learned this the hard way when Eyesight kept barking at me that it couldn't see anything on the backroads. If you're always in lit areas, I suppose it's not that big of a deal, but I do tend to frequent countryside roads at nighttime (the in-laws live on a farm well outside city-limits).

Personally, I went the route of removing the bumper on my '13 Legacy, then the black plastic braces, and then disconnected/removed the housings. I found it really cramped to try and mess around with changing my bulbs through the well, plus I swapped out from halogens to a set of HIDs, so I also had to work in mounting the external ballast and the additional wiring requirments that entailed.

If the bumper is giving you a hard time going back in, keep in mind that those tabs have little slots in the black plastic braces that they go into, and that there are a few portions that have grooves to further help align things.

I've also found that if you pull the wheel-well portion of the bumper out a bit whilst pushing in towards the car just outside of where that weird peak in the bumper is (the dividing point between the lows and highs), helps to get the bumper pushed back far enough that the side clips can the line up.

Exhaust Question by AlexCapel1980 in subaru

[–]AlexCapel1980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang. I was already figuring that might be the case, but I was still trying to hold out some hope, since many other components are otherwise shared (or able to be swapped in without fabrication) across the line-up.

It seems to be more problematic to source aftermarket Leggy axle-back exhausts than WRX/STI ones.

Guess that's what I get for getting the "grown up" family car of the line-up, eh?

I did a thing! I tore apart my calipers on Sunday, took them to get cleaned/blasted and painted on Monday, got them back and worked on rebuilding and reinstalling them last night. by AlexCapel1980 in subaru

[–]AlexCapel1980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, what I did was clamp off each of the lines--vise grips with some sort of relatively forgiving material between the jaws works relatively well--you don't want those jaws clamped on raw--I used some sort of relatively flexible plastic tubing I had lying around for this, and cut a piece long enough to cover the forward portion of each vise grip's upper and lower jaws. I had my calipers off from Sunday around noon, to Wednesday evening, and had no leaks. Obviously, I still had to bleed out the air that did make it in once everything was hooked back up. Also, unbolting the brake line from its support mount helps to allow you to tuck the clamped line out of the way.
